How do you handle separation anxiety during a stay?
Separation anxiety is the reason many Cape Ann owners have never left their dog overnight. It is also the case our handlers see most often at a first stay. This page is honest about what a stay can and cannot do for an anxious dog, and about what we do hour by hour.
The short version
Tell us early, and we build the stay around the dog you describe
The single most useful thing you can do is say it out loud. Our team tailors each dog's day to its temperament, but we can only plan for what we know. If your dog paces, drools, refuses food or chews the door frame when you leave, write it on the new customer form and repeat it at the evaluation.
The free evaluation is where we see it for ourselves. It happens on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM and includes a few supervised hours in a group after the temperament test. An anxious dog often shows us within the first hour how it copes once the owner has gone, which tells us how to place it and what to add to its stay.

How it works at Dogtown
Company fills the day, routine settles the night
Anxiety at a stay is mostly about empty time, and the Dogtown day has very little of it. From the morning drop-off window your dog is in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs chosen by size and temperament, with a handler present throughout. A dog that would spend the day at home watching the door spends it on the turf or on the indoor play floors when a nor'easter is blowing in off the Atlantic.
We layer in enrichment because it gives an anxious mind a job. A lick mat is $5, a frozen Kong $6, a puzzle game $7 and the sniff room $7, all bookable onto any night of a stay. Licking and sniffing calm a dog in a way a squeaky toy does not.

What it means for your dog
Puppies borrow confidence; adults need a plan; hard cases need a longer runway
A puppy's version of separation anxiety is usually plain inexperience. They have never been apart from you, and the first ten minutes are usually loud. In a group the puppy borrows confidence from calmer dogs and is asleep by mid-afternoon. One full daycare day before the first night, at $42, turns most puppy worries into a non-event.
Adult dogs with a real history need a plan rather than reassurance. Two or three daycare days over a fortnight, then a single night, then the trip. Each step teaches the same lesson: you leave, the day is good, you come back. Keep the drop-off routine identical each time, down to the leash you use and where you park on Eastern Ave.
Some dogs are beyond what a stay can fix, and we say so; we would rather lose a booking than put a dog through a week it cannot handle. A dog that panics for hours, injures itself or cannot eat is a training conversation first, and your vet should hear about it before any long stay. Our trainers run relationship-based, force-free programs built for anxious adolescents, rescues and adults, and a shorter stay or a sitter at home may be kinder in the meantime.

Before the stay
Ten days of preparation does more than any single night here
Preparation lives at home. Practice short absences and come back before the panic starts, then stretch them. Pack one blanket from the bed and pre-portioned food; leave the toy box behind. If the car ride itself is the trigger, book the Pup Van at $10 each way in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea, since arriving with a Dogtown driver skips the lobby goodbye.
Timing matters on Cape Ann. The July 3 fireworks over Gloucester harbor and the Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend are hard nights for a noise-sensitive dog anywhere, a suite included. If you have a choice, do the first stay on a quiet week in fall or winter, when Good Harbor is open to dogs on even-numbered days and your dog arrives tired from the beach.
