The prices

$78 a night at Dogtown; a sitter is priced per visit or per night, by the sitter

Dogtown's overnight suite is $78 a night, and that figure covers the day as well as the night. Your dog joins a matched playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs while we are open, eats the food you packed, and settles into a suite with bedding we provide and staff on site around the clock. Two bundles sit on top: the Dogtown Classic adds a daily homemade pupsicle and 10 percent off grooming for $10 a night, and the Dogtown Deluxe adds a stuffed Kong or Toppl, a daily treadmill or enrichment session, an orthopedic memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming for $15.

Pet sitters price in different units, which is the first thing to untangle. Some charge per drop-in visit of a set length, some per overnight in your home, some per 24 hours of house-sitting, and a second dog is often priced on top. We do not publish other businesses' rates and they change often, so ask each sitter for a written quote for your exact dates and line it up against the table. The number that matters is the cost per night with your dog actually accompanied.

What changes the price

Length of stay, holidays, bundles and the second dog move the total

At Dogtown the nightly rate does not change with the season, but availability does. Thanksgiving week, the days around Christmas and New Year, and the Fourth of July fill first, and members of the $700 unlimited daycare plan get priority on holiday overnight reservations. A groom before pick-up is the most common extra, a bath from $55 or a full service from $75 by size, and enrichment add-ons run $5 to $10 each.

With a sitter, the total moves with the number of visits and whether they sleep over. Three drop-ins a day for a week is a very different bill from a live-in sitter, and holidays usually carry a surcharge. Ask what happens if the sitter falls ill or a storm closes the roads, and whether a substitute is included in the price or a phone call you would have to make yourself from an airport.

Which to choose

Choose the stay for a social dog, the sitter for a dog who wants its own couch

The overnight stay suits the dog who already comes to daycare or would pass the evaluation happily: the two-year-old lab who plays until noon and naps until dinner, the doodle who greets every human, the adolescent who would otherwise take the house apart while a sitter is at work. These dogs spend the day busy and the night tired, which is the point of the stay, and the report card in the Dogtown app shows you both halves.

A pet sitter is the better fit for several dogs, and we would say so at the evaluation: a senior who sleeps eighteen hours and stiffens on hard floors, a dog who is reactive to other dogs and would spend a playgroup day managing stress, a dog on a strict medication schedule tied to meals at home, a household with a cat or a rabbit that also needs feeding, and any dog whose Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella vaccinations are not current. Puppies and new rescues sit in the middle: a puppy who has done the evaluation and a couple of daycare days usually handles a first night well, while a rescue in its first month home is often better with a sitter or a shorter trip.

Deciding

How to test both before a two-week trip

Do not make a first overnight the first time your dog has ever been to Eastern Ave. Book the free evaluation, which runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 by appointment, then a daycare day or two, then a single night. If your dog eats, plays and sleeps normally, a longer stay will go the same way. If not, we will tell you, and a sitter becomes the plan without anyone losing face.

Trial a sitter the same way. Book one drop-in or one night while you are within an hour of home, check the photos and notes they send, and see how your dog greets you afterwards. You will also learn how the person handles a key, a gate and a dog who will not come in from the yard. Two short trials in the spring save a great deal of worry in August.

How Cape Ann changes the choice: Ollie's Law, the Fiesta and the Sunday windows

Massachusetts passed Ollie's Law, An Act to Increase Kennel Safety, on September 20, 2024; it took effect December 19, 2024, and the state Department of Agricultural Resources is due to publish its daycare and boarding regulations in 2026. Those rules apply to facilities like ours. A sitter working in your kitchen sits outside that framework, so the questions about insurance, references and a backup plan fall to you. Local events drive the calendar. St. Peter's Fiesta in late June and the Gloucester fireworks on July 3 bring noise a fearful dog would rather sleep through in a suite than on a sitter's watch near the harbor, while the Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend fills every guest room on Cape Ann and our suites with them. We are closed for daycare on Sundays but open for overnight pick-up and drop-off from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, so a Sunday-night return from Logan still works, and the Pup Van collects and returns your dog for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Does my dog need to have been to daycare before an overnight stay?

Every dog completes the free evaluation first, which includes a few supervised hours in a group, so in a sense yes. A full daycare day before the first night is not required but we recommend it, because a dog who already knows the yard and the handlers settles faster on night one.

Can a pet sitter and Dogtown be combined?

Yes, and for long trips it is often the best plan. Some families book Dogtown for the week and a sitter for the last night so the dog is home when they land; others use our at-home walks, $25 for 20 minutes up to $55 for 60, on days a sitter cannot come. Ask us whether we cover your address for walks.

What should I pack for the stay, and what does the sitter need?

For Dogtown, pre-portioned food, any medication with written instructions, and one comfort item such as a blanket; we supply the bedding. A sitter needs the food, the medication, a key, the vet's number and an emergency plan, which on Cape Ann means knowing that Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is the 24-hour option.

Do you send updates during a stay?

Yes. The Dogtown app carries report cards and messages from the front desk, so you see who your dog played with and how the night went. A good sitter sends photos and notes after each visit too; ask for that in writing before you book, along with a same-day call if anything seems off.
