Do I need to book daycare in advance?

Two things make advance booking the rule. First, every new dog does a free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM before any daycare day, so a first visit can never be same-day. Second, groups are deliberately small: 7 to 10 dogs, put together by size, play style and temperament. A cap that low is what keeps the yard calm, and it also means a Tuesday can be full.

For a regular dog, advance means the evening before, or a standing weekly pattern set up once. For a holiday week, a school vacation week or the stretch between St. Peter's Fiesta and Labor Day, when Gloucester fills with visitors and second-home owners, think in weeks rather than days. The front desk will tell you plainly how a given day is looking.

Summer is the crunch. Rockport bans dogs from its public beaches from June 1 to September 15, Essex closes its beaches to dogs in June, July and August, and Gloucester's beaches are closed to dogs all summer, so every dog on Cape Ann needs somewhere else to run at exactly the time the population doubles. Fiesta week in late June, the July 3 fireworks and the Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend are the days people most want covered, and the days that fill first.

Winter has its own pattern. A nor'easter forecast from the National Weather Service in Boston can move a whole week of bookings around, and the days after a storm, when sidewalks are ice and the beaches are wind-scoured, are busy. Commuters on the Rockport line book Mondays and Fridays hardest. If your work week is fixed, ask the front desk whether a standing weekly reservation can be set up; it removes most of the guesswork.

Puppies settle fastest on a rhythm: the same two or three days each week, the same drop-off window, the same handlers. Booking a month of Tuesdays and Thursdays at once, rather than deciding each Monday night, gives a young dog that rhythm and gives you the FIRST15 discount of 15 percent on the very first visit.

Adult dogs are more flexible, and a last-minute day when a meeting lands or the sitter cancels is exactly what the app is for. Seniors and anxious dogs are the ones to protect from irregularity. If your older dog comes only occasionally, book the quieter mid-week days and the midday window, and tell the front desk so the group can be chosen with your dog in mind.
