10-packs vs the unlimited membership: the break-even math

A single full day is $42 and a half day is $33. Buy in bulk and the day rate drops: the full-day 5-pack is $200, or $40 a day, and the full-day 10-pack is $380, or $38 a day. Half-day packs run $150 for five and $290 for ten, which is $30 and $29 a session. Packs are bought online or in the Dogtown app and spent on whichever days you book, so a 10-pack can stretch across a slow month or be gone in a fortnight.

The unlimited daycare membership is $700 a month. It covers unlimited daycare Monday through Saturday, two enrichment sessions a month, 15 percent off grooming, priority on holiday overnight-stay reservations and a birthday enrichment session. It does not include Dogtown Academy days, which are priced separately at $89 for a full day. The table shows what a month costs each way at the 10-pack rate, so you can find your own row.

The five-day commuter household is the clearest membership case. If both adults ride the Rockport line into Boston and the dog comes to Eastern Ave every weekday, that is 21 to 23 full days a month, and the membership saves roughly a hundred dollars or more against the 10-pack rate before a single extra is counted. Add the grooming discount, the enrichment sessions and priority on Thanksgiving and Christmas overnight bookings, and the decision makes itself.

The hybrid household, three or four days a week, is a pack household. Sixteen days a month on the 10-pack is $608, which leaves $92 in hand against the membership, and because packs do not care which days you use, a sick week costs nothing. New dogs should start on packs regardless: the first month tells you what your dog's real attendance will be. Attendance on Cape Ann is seasonal. From June 1 to September 15 Rockport closes its public beaches to dogs, and Gloucester's beaches are closed to dogs from May 1 through September 30, so the after-work beach run that replaced a daycare day in April disappears in summer and attendance climbs. A membership held for the summer and dropped to packs in October, when Good Harbor reopens to dogs on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, is a pattern we see often.

Weather cuts the other way. A nor'easter that keeps everyone off the roads for a morning is a membership day paid for and not used, while a pack day simply waits for the next booking; check the National Weather Service Boston forecast the night before. The Pup Van tilts it back: at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, a household without a second car can send the dog on days nobody is driving past Eastern Ave, which pushes attendance toward the five-day pattern where the membership pays.
