Scottie grooming

Scottish Terrier grooming in Gloucester, MA

The Scottie is known by its silhouette as much as its face, and that silhouette is made by grooming. Under it is a hard, wiry jacket over a soft undercoat. This page explains the two ways to keep that coat, what each one does to it over the years, and what a Scottie owner in Gloucester pays and does between visits.

Wire over wool

The Scottie coat is a hard, wiry jacket over a dense, soft undercoat, with longer furnishings below

The AKC describes the Scottie as dual-coated: a harsh, wiry outer layer over a dense, soft undercoat. The breed standard calls it a broken coat and asks that it be trimmed and blended into the furnishings to give a distinct Scottish Terrier outline. The furnishings are the longer hair on the beard, the legs and the lower body, which the standard allows to be a little softer than the jacket but never fluffy. The small, pricked ears carry only short, velvety hair.

The jacket on the back and sides stays short and shrugs off dirt. On a dog about 10 inches tall at the shoulder, the skirt under the chest and belly rides close to the ground, so it sweeps up sand, leaves and slush on every walk. The beard dips into the water bowl several times a day. The skirt, the beard and the leg hair are where a Scottie tangles, and where most of the grooming time goes.

  • Jacket: harsh and wiry, kept short on the back and sides
  • Undercoat: dense and soft, the layer that takes over a clipped coat
  • Skirt and legs: the longer furnishings that pick up wet sand and burrs
  • Beard and brows: shaped to frame the eyes and the long head

Clipper or stripping

Our full service clips the Scottie pattern; whether the coat can be hand stripped is confirmed at check-in

The AKC is direct about the ideal: a Scottie is best hand stripped, starting as a young puppy so it gets used to the process, ideally once a month once the coat is started. Stripping pulls the dead outer hairs out by the root so a new hard coat grows in. The AKC also says plainly that a groomer who will strip a pet can be hard to find, and that clipping the coat is then acceptable. Clipping cuts the hair to length instead of removing it.

Our full service is a bath plus a breed-specific or custom haircut. On a Scottie that usually means the clippered pattern: the back and neck taken short, the skirt and legs left longer and evened, the beard squared and the brow hair shaped over the eyes. Hand stripping is not listed on our published menu. If you want it, say so when you book; the groomer looks at the coat and confirms at check-in whether it can be done for your dog.

The AKC spells out the trade-off. With clipping, the correct harsh texture is eventually lost, because the undercoat takes over once cutting begins, so a clipped Scottie feels softer after a few years. For a family dog that is a fair exchange for a coat you can keep tidy on a regular schedule.

  • Hand stripping: the AKC's ideal, confirmed by the groomer at check-in
  • Clipping: our full service, quicker and fine for a pet
  • Clipped over the years: the harsh texture gives way to undercoat
  • Showing your dog: ask about stripping before the first clip

Six to eight weeks

A clipped Scottie holds its outline for six to eight weeks; past that, the skirt and beard cost extra time

The AKC puts a clipped coat on a six- to eight-week schedule, with a weekly brushing and comb-out at home to keep it tangle free and the skin healthy. Inside that window the visit is a reshape: the outline is still there to follow, the skirt has only grown a little and the beard needs a trim.

Past eight weeks the skirt is where it shows. Long furnishings on a low dog drag through wet leaves on Dogtown Common and the slush on Gloucester sidewalks, then knot where the front legs meet the chest and where the back legs rub. Working those knots out is dematting, $15 per 20 minutes on top of the $75 full service, assessed at check-in. Where the skirt has matted close to the skin, a shorter skirt is often kinder than a long session with a comb.

What it costs

A Scottie pays our small-dog price: $75 for full service and $55 for a bath

Grooming at Dogtown is priced by weight, not by breed. The AKC gives Scottie males 19 to 22 pounds and females 18 to 21, so nearly every adult sits in our band for dogs up to 25 pounds: $75 for the full service with the haircut and $55 for a bath, blow-dry and brush-out. A heavier Scottie over 25 pounds moves to the next band, at $85 and $65. Your groomer weighs up the band and the coat at check-in and confirms the final price there.

The add-ons a Scottie uses most are the $10 face trim between haircuts, the $10 sanitary trim under a long skirt and nail clipping at $16; whether the nails are clipped or ground is matched to your dog and confirmed at check-in. Unlimited daycare members take 15 percent off grooming, as do overnight guests on the Dogtown Deluxe bundle, and the Dogtown Classic bundle takes 10 percent. The $20 handling surcharge pays for extra time and hands if a dog needs a slower pace.

Between visits

At home, a weekly comb-out of the skirt and beard keeps the next groom short

The weekly brushing and comb-out the AKC recommends is a short job on a dog this size. Run a slicker brush over the jacket, then a metal comb through the skirt, the legs and the beard, working from the skin outward. If the comb catches, split the knot with your fingers before you reach for scissors; our how-to on handling a mat before it spreads shows the safe way. Wipe the beard after meals so food does not dry into it.

A Gloucester winter adds salt. The skirt and the leg furnishings carry road salt and grit home from every walk on a treated sidewalk, and that is worth rinsing out with plain water and drying the same day. From April to November, tick season on Cape Ann, run your fingers through the skirt and under the beard after Dogtown Common or Ravenswood, because that long hair close to the ground is exactly where a tick waits to be found.

  • Slicker brush on the jacket, metal comb through the furnishings, weekly
  • Beard wiped and dried after meals
  • Skirt rinsed with plain water after salted sidewalks
  • Fingers through the skirt and beard for ticks, April to November

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can you hand strip my Scottish Terrier?
Hand stripping is not listed on our published grooming menu, so we do not promise it on this page. Tell us when you book that you want the coat stripped, and the groomer confirms at check-in whether it can be done for your dog. Our full service, $75 for most Scotties, clips the breed pattern instead, the route the AKC calls acceptable for a pet.
Why does my clipped Scottie's coat feel soft?
Clipping cuts the hard outer hairs instead of pulling them, and over time the soft undercoat takes over. The AKC says a clipped Scottie eventually loses the correct harsh texture. It is a change in look and feel for a family dog, not a health problem. Keep up the weekly comb-out and the coat stays clean and free of tangles whatever its texture.
How much is a Scottie groom in Gloucester?
At Dogtown a Scottie up to 25 pounds is $75 for the full service: bath, blow-dry, brush-out and the pattern haircut. A bath alone is $55. Common extras are the $10 face trim, the $10 sanitary trim and nail clipping at $16. The final price is confirmed at check-in, and rebooking before you leave takes $5 off the next visit.
Can I keep my Scottie's skirt long?
Yes. The full service is a breed-specific or custom haircut, so ask for the length you want and bring a photo. A long skirt on a dog this low does need the weekly comb-out, and it collects sand, burrs and road salt. If the combing keeps slipping, a slightly shorter skirt through the salt and mud months is the practical compromise.
Can my Scottie be groomed during a daycare day?
Yes, once your Scottie has passed the free daycare evaluation, held on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city dog license. Then add the groom when you book a $42 full day or a $33 half day, and the Pup Van can do the driving for $10 each way in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
