School vacation week dog boarding in Gloucester: February and April

February and April vacation weeks are when Cape Ann families with school-age children travel, and the dog's week has to be planned around the same dates. This page lists the Gloucester dates for the next two school years, shows how a seven-night stay lines up with the drop-off windows, and explains how to fit the evaluation into a school-week morning before you go.

The dates

Gloucester's vacation weeks fall in mid-February and mid-April, with a holiday Monday in front

Gloucester Public Schools publishes its calendars more than a year ahead. For 2026 to 2027, Presidents' Day on Monday, February 15 is followed by February vacation from February 16 to 19, and Patriots' Day on Monday, April 19 is followed by spring vacation from April 20 to 23. The 2027 to 2028 calendar, approved in February 2026, puts the same breaks at February 21 to 25 and April 17 to 21, 2028, holiday Mondays included.

Rockport, Manchester Essex and the other North Shore districts each publish their own calendars, so check your children's school before you count nights. Households with children in two systems, a college student home on a different week, or a parent whose work does not follow the school year often find the dog's stay is the one fixed point in a busy fortnight. Write the nights down as soon as the school calendar is out, then reserve them.

The seven-night pattern

Most vacation-week stays run seven nights, Sunday to Sunday or Saturday to Saturday

A school vacation is five weekdays wrapped in two weekends, and the stay follows the family. The shape that fits most plans is seven nights: drop off on the Sunday before, in the 8 to 10 AM or 4 to 6 PM window, and collect on the Sunday after in the same windows. Families flying out on a Saturday drop off between 8 and 10 AM, 12 and 1 PM or 4 and 6 PM, and collect the following Saturday. Either way the base cost is seven nights at $78 each.

Flights home from a February week run late and run into weather. If there is any chance you will land after the Sunday 4 to 6 PM window closes, book the eighth night now and collect on Monday morning, when the weekday window opens at 6:30 AM. Adding a night while you are booking is simpler than hunting for one from an airport, and a dog that stays an extra night simply gets another day in its playgroup.

Fitting in the evaluation

The evaluation runs on school-day mornings, so it has to happen weeks before the break

Every dog new to Dogtown does the free evaluation before its first night: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a playgroup. It runs Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, which means it happens during a school week, not during the vacation. For a February trip that points to January; for April, to March. An evaluation on the Friday before departure leaves no room if a vaccine date turns out to have lapsed.

Parents on the school run can use the early end of the window: bring the dog to 210 Eastern Ave before the buses, then collect it after its few supervised hours. Bring Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and the city license. If you hoped to use the Presidents' Day or Patriots' Day Monday instead, check the Dogtown app first; holiday hours are announced there, and this page does not assume them. Then, if you can, add one daycare day before the trip.

  • Evaluation: weekdays only, 6:30 to 9:30 AM, by appointment
  • February trip: evaluate in January
  • April trip: evaluate in March
  • Holiday Mondays: read the holiday-hours notice in the app first

Who it fits

A vacation-week stay suits a family away for the whole break, not one at home with the kids

The natural guest is the dog of a family flying south in February or driving north to the mountains in April, gone for the full week. It also suits the split household, where one parent travels with the children and the other works long days and cannot manage the walks. In both cases the dog gets a playgroup every day of the break and a monitored suite every night, which keeps its days full while the house stands empty.

If the family is home for the break, the dog does not need a suite; the children are the entertainment, and a daycare day at $42 or a half day at $33 covers the day you go skiing. A dog that has never spent a night away should not make vacation week its first. Try a single night on a quiet weekend in January or March, and read the report card in the app before you commit to seven.

  • Families away for the full week, February or April
  • Split households where nobody is home in the daytime
  • Home for the break? A daycare day at $42 or a half day at $33 instead
  • Never stayed away? One quiet weekend night before the long week

Price and the season

Seven nights at $78, plus whatever the season leaves in the coat

The suite is $78 a night, and the published price list carries no vacation-week surcharge. The Dogtown Classic adds $10 a night for a daily pupsicle or puppy cup and 10 percent off grooming; the Dogtown Deluxe adds $15 a night for a stuffed Kong or Toppl, a daily treadmill or enrichment session, the orthopedic memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming. Over seven nights the Deluxe is worth pricing against single add-ons such as a $7 sniff-room session. Our overnight stays page has the full menu.

The season decides the grooming. In February, Gloucester's beaches are open to dogs, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, so a dog that walked the sand the day before drop-off arrives salty, and a bath before pick-up runs $55 to $95 by size. By April vacation Good Harbor has been closed to dogs since April 1, Wingaersheek stays open on odd days until April 30, and tick season has begun, so check your dog over before drop-off.

The Pup Van runs at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, which helps on a departure morning when the car is packed to the roof; outside those towns, ask us for pricing. Pack pre-portioned meals for every day plus a spare in case a February storm delays the flight home, any medications with written instructions, and one comfort item that smells of the house.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

When are the February and April vacation weeks in Gloucester?
For 2026 to 2027, Gloucester Public Schools lists Presidents' Day on February 15 with February vacation from February 16 to 19, then Patriots' Day on April 19 with spring vacation from April 20 to 23. Other districts publish their own calendars, so check your children's school before you book the nights.
Can the evaluation happen during vacation week itself?
Only on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, and by then your stay has usually started. The evaluation exists to place your dog in the right playgroup before its first night, so do it on a school-week morning, in January for February or in March for April, with a daycare day afterwards if you can.
Is there a discount for a full seven nights?
The published price list has no long-stay rate: each night is $78. The saving comes from choosing well. The Deluxe bundle at $15 a night includes a daily enrichment session and 15 percent off a groom, and a frozen Kong at $6 plus a treadmill session at $10 bought separately already cost more than the bundle.
Our flight lands on Sunday night. What happens?
Sunday windows for overnight guests are 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. If you might miss the 6 PM close, ask the front desk before you travel how a late return is handled; booking Sunday night as well is one option. If the delay is a surprise, call 978 491-5922 or message the front desk in the Dogtown app as soon as you know.
Do the holiday Mondays change anything?
They can. Presidents' Day and Patriots' Day are Mondays, and holiday hours are confirmed with the front desk rather than on this page. If your drop-off, pick-up or evaluation falls on either Monday, check before you plan around it. Dogs already staying have 24/7 monitoring; ask the front desk how the holiday Monday itself is covered.
