Last-minute dog boarding in Gloucester: what we can do this week

Plans fall through: a parent goes into hospital, a work trip is called on Tuesday for Thursday, a sitter cancels the night before. This page lays out the honest timeline from first call to first night, the paperwork that stops most short-notice bookings, and the weeks on Cape Ann when short notice rarely works.

Already a Dogtown dog

For a dog we already know, last-minute comes down to one free suite

One evaluation covers daycare, the Academy, walks and overnight stays, so a dog that already comes to us has done the hard part. Open the Dogtown app or call the front desk, give the dates, and if a suite is free the stay is booked. Drop off in the next window: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturday 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6 PM; Sunday, for overnight guests, 8 to 10 AM or 4 to 6 PM.

Check two things before you pack. Are the vaccine dates on file still current, or has a Bordetella or rabies booster lapsed since the last visit? And has anything changed, such as a new medication, a recent surgery or a new habit at night? Say so when you book, so the stay is planned around the dog you are bringing rather than the one on file from last spring.

  • Evaluation already done: book the nights in the app or by phone
  • Vaccine dates on file still current
  • Any change in health or behavior mentioned at booking

A new dog's timeline

For a new dog the fastest route is paperwork today, the evaluation on the next weekday morning, then the night

The evaluation sets the pace. It runs only on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, by appointment, and includes a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a playgroup. Call on a Tuesday afternoon and the earliest evaluation is Wednesday morning, if a slot is open. Call on a Friday afternoon or a Saturday and the earliest is Monday, which matters when the trip starts on the weekend.

Once the evaluation is done, the stay can begin as soon as a suite is free. The new customer form on this site starts your file while you gather the records, and the front desk will tell you what is open for the nights you need. What we will not do is skip the evaluation: a dog that has not been seen in a group does not join one, however urgent the trip.

The paperwork

Vaccines and the city license stop more short-notice bookings than anything else

Dogtown asks for current Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella vaccinations and a current city dog license before any stay. If a vaccine has lapsed, the fix runs through your vet's calendar, not ours: a booster appointment, then whatever interval your vet advises before the dog mixes with others. Find the records first; a lapsed date discovered at the evaluation costs you the morning.

The license is the trap in Gloucester. At the time of writing the city renews licenses online for dogs with a current rabies certificate, but new licenses go by mail or into the drop box at City Hall, the City Clerk's office does not process them at the counter, and tags arrive by mail. A dog that has never been licensed here cannot be licensed in an afternoon. Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea run their own offices; if your application is in the mail, ask the front desk what they can accept.

  • Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella current on the day of the stay
  • City license current; Gloucester renewals can be done online
  • New Gloucester licenses: by mail or drop box, with tags mailed
  • License still in process: ask the front desk what they accept

Weeks to avoid

In the holiday weeks, plan as if last-minute will not work

Some weeks are booked by people who planned months ahead, and unlimited daycare members hold priority on holiday overnight-stay reservations on top of that. On Cape Ann those weeks are Thanksgiving, Christmas through New Year, the February and April school vacations, Fiesta weekend in late June, the July 3 celebrations and Labor Day weekend. Gloucester's 2026 to 2027 school calendar marks the breaks as November 26 to 27, December 24 to January 1, February 15 to 19 and April 19 to 23.

We do not publish availability, and a cancellation can free a suite in any week, so a call is always worth making. But if your trip lands in one of those weeks and your dog is new to us, have a second plan ready: a friend or relative, a sitter, or a daycare day at $42 with someone at home overnight. Solo walks from home start at $25 for 20 minutes where we cover your address, after the same evaluation.

Price and getting here

Short notice costs no more: $78 a night, and the Pup Van when you are out of time

The published rate does not change with notice: the suite is $78 a night, the Dogtown Classic bundle adds $10 and the Deluxe $15. The evaluation that comes before a new dog's first night is free. If you are leaving in a hurry, add any bundle at booking rather than mid-stay; the Deluxe brings a daily stuffed Kong or Toppl, enrichment and the memory-foam bed. Our overnight stays page lists everything else included.

The building is on Eastern Ave, on the Rockport side of downtown Gloucester. When the day has run away from you, the Pup Van can collect your dog for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; ask whether a run fits the window you need, and outside those towns ask for pricing. Pack pre-portioned food for every day plus a spare, any medications with written instructions, and one comfort item.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can my dog stay tonight?
If it has already passed our evaluation and a suite is free, yes: call 978 491-5922 or book in the Dogtown app and drop off in the next window. If it is new to us, the evaluation comes first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, and the front desk will say when a stay can start after it.
Can you do the evaluation on a Saturday?
No. Evaluations run Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. A trip that starts on a Saturday needs the evaluation done by Friday morning at the latest, and earlier is better. If it is already Friday afternoon, the earliest evaluation is the following Monday morning.
My dog's license has expired. Can it still stay?
A current city license is one of the requirements. In Gloucester, renewals can be done online if the rabies certificate is current; new licenses go by mail or the City Hall drop box, and tags are mailed. Start the renewal today and ask the front desk what they can accept while it is being processed.
What if no suite is free?
Ask the front desk whether they can contact you if one frees up, and line up a second plan the same day. A daycare day at $42 covers the daylight hours if a friend can take the nights, and our solo walks start at $25 for 20 minutes where we cover your address. In holiday weeks, assume you will need the second plan.
Does a last-minute booking cost more?
The published rate is $78 a night, and the Classic and Deluxe bundles are $10 and $15 a night; ask the front desk to confirm the terms for a short-notice booking. Enrichment add-ons, a groom before pick-up and the Pup Van are charged at the same published prices whatever the notice.
