Puppy training on the North Shore, MA

The weeks between bringing a puppy home and finishing the vaccine series shape the adult dog, and they go fast. This page matches each Dogtown program to your puppy's age in weeks, answers the vaccine question straight, and explains how North Shore families get a puppy to Gloucester.

By age

Match the program to your puppy's age in weeks, and most of the choice is made for you

At 8 to 16 weeks the answer is Tiny Tails Puppy School, built around life skills, confidence, socialization, enrichment and heading off common puppy problems, in 4, 6 or 8 week lengths. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy overlaps it, taking puppies from 8 weeks to 6 months over 6 weeks and 12 sessions while they work toward the AKC's S.T.A.R. Puppy requirements. Choose S.T.A.R. if you like a defined goal at the end, and Tiny Tails if your priority is a puppy who copes calmly with the world.

From 4 months the path splits by temperament. Bright Beginnings covers manners, recall, focus, impulse control and leash skills for the confident puppy, and Brave & Balanced is for the young dog who hides, flinches at handling or worries about strangers. Puppies growing into adolescence move on to Calm & Connected. Board and train's one-week Foundation program is built for puppies and young dogs, and we confirm the minimum age at the consult, because it depends on vaccines and on the individual puppy.

The vaccine question

Most puppies can start class a week after the first vaccine set, and your vet makes the final call

Veterinary behavior specialists argue that waiting for the final shot carries its own risk. The AVSAB's position statement on puppy socialization calls the first three months the primary socialization period and says puppies can start classes as early as 7 to 8 weeks, with at least one set of vaccines 7 days before the first class, a first deworming, and vaccines kept current throughout. It also advises skipping dog parks and other places busy with dogs of unknown vaccine status until the series is done.

Two other dates matter here. Massachusetts law requires dogs to be vaccinated against rabies by the time they are 6 months old, and Dogtown's daycare, Academy and overnight stays need Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file plus a current city license, so a young puppy usually joins those later than it joins a class. What Tiny Tails needs on file is confirmed at the consult. Until your vet clears it, keep to training sessions and clean floors, and save the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort for later.

  • First vaccine set at least 7 days before the first class
  • A first deworming before class, per the AVSAB
  • Vaccines kept current through the course
  • No dog parks until your vet clears it
  • Rabies by 6 months under Massachusetts law

Who comes

North Shore puppies arrive by Route 128 or Route 133, and the car ride counts as socialization

From Beverly, Danvers, Peabody and Salem it is 25 to 35 minutes up Route 128 to Eastern Ave, outside rush hour by our estimate, and about 30 minutes from Ipswich along Route 133 through Essex. That is not wasted time. The AVSAB's puppy statement recommends that puppies go along on as many car trips as possible during socialization, so a calm twice-weekly drive with a chew in the crate is practice in its own right. Bring a towel, and keep the radio low on the first few trips.

Cape Ann puppies have it easier: Rockport is 10 to 15 minutes away, and Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea about 20. For the household where nobody can do every drive, the Pup Van collects for daycare, Academy and overnight stays in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way, and Canine Campus includes pick-up and drop-off. For a Tiny Tails or S.T.A.R. session, ask at the consult; most of what a puppy learns has to carry over to you, so come when you can.

The first weeks

A puppy program starts with a form and a short assessment, then two sessions a week with homework

Send the training form with your puppy's age, breed, vaccine dates and whatever is already worrying you, whether chewing, mouthing, the crate or the car, and you will hear back within one hour on business days. Gabby meets the puppy for a short assessment, recommends the program and its length, and confirms the plan and the investment before you commit. The 4, 6 and 8 week lengths of Tiny Tails come to 8, 12 and 16 sessions, two a week.

Expect brief sessions sized to a young puppy's attention span, and homework of a few minutes a day: handling paws and ears, settling on a mat, coming when called across the kitchen. Socialization is deliberate, with new surfaces, sounds, people and steady adult dogs introduced at a pace the puppy can manage. Nothing uses corrections. The AVSAB statement links positive, consistent training to fewer behavior problems and better obedience than punishment-based methods.

Why Dogtown

Puppies here learn from a trainer with a behavior background, in a building full of safe new sights and sounds

Gabriella Pope leads the puppy programs as she leads every Dogtown program, bringing more than ten years of hands-on work with behaviorally complex dogs to the youngest ones. That background matters at this age. The AVSAB warns that incomplete or improper socialization during the first months can raise the risk of fear, avoidance and aggression later in life, which is why her puppy work is about prevention as much as manners. The method is force-free, relationship-based and patient.

The building does the rest. In 10,000 square feet a puppy can meet indoor play floors, an outdoor turf yard, a sensory garden and a lobby with people coming and going, all under supervision, with calm adult dogs from the matched playgroups of 7 to 10 nearby. Puppies who go on to puppy daycare already know the smell and sound of the place, and the Dogtown app keeps their report cards together from the first day.

  • Led by Gabriella Pope, Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist
  • Force-free: positive reinforcement only
  • New surfaces, sounds and steady dogs in one building
  • An easy path into puppy daycare once vaccines and the evaluation are done

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

My puppy is 10 weeks old. Which program fits?
Tiny Tails Puppy School, which takes pups from 8 to 16 weeks, or AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, which runs from 8 weeks to 6 months. Choose Tiny Tails for broad life skills and socialization, or S.T.A.R. for a defined AKC goal. Tell us on the training form where the vaccine series stands, and your vet's timing will be respected.
Is 5 months too old for puppy training?
No. At 5 months a puppy can still join AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, which runs until 6 months, or start Bright Beginnings for manners and recall or Brave & Balanced for confidence, both from 4 months. Tiny Tails is the one program it has outgrown, since that class is for pups 8 to 16 weeks.
Can my puppy go to daycare while doing puppy school?
Yes, once the free evaluation is done and Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city dog license are on file. Evaluations run on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. A half day of puppy daycare is $33, and the half day is the length we suggest for puppies; a full day is $42.
Does the Pup Van bring puppies to class?
The Pup Van runs for daycare, Academy and overnight stays in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way, and Canine Campus includes pick-up and drop-off. For a Tiny Tails or S.T.A.R. Puppy session, ask at the consult. Much of what a puppy learns has to carry over to you, so being there helps.
What if my puppy is scared of everything?
Tell us on the form. The 8-week length of Tiny Tails gives a cautious puppy a slower build, and from 4 months Brave & Balanced is designed for young dogs with fear, handling sensitivity or worry about strangers. Socialization goes at the pace the puppy can handle, and nothing is forced.
