Puppy potty-break visits: 20-minute walks for young pups
House-training a puppy while holding down a job is a math problem: the usual rule of thumb is roughly an hour of holding time for each month of age, and a workday is eight hours or more. Something has to give, and it should not be the puppy's progress or your floors. A midday potty break fills the gap with a familiar face, and it starts a pup's relationship with Dogtown before daycare is even on the table.
The gap
A puppy's bladder runs on a shorter clock than your workday
The rule of thumb the AKC gives is roughly one hour of holding time for each month of age, so a three-month-old puppy is good for about three hours and a five-month-old for about five. A Rockport line commuter who leaves at 6:45 AM and gets home at 6:15 PM is asking a puppy to manage eleven. A puppy that is forced to go in its crate learns that going in the crate is what happens, which is the opposite of house-training.
A single midday visit cuts the longest stretch in half. For a pup in the three-to-five-month range that is often enough to keep the crate clean and the training on track; younger pups may need two visits, and we will say so rather than sell you one. As the puppy grows, the visit can stretch into a proper 30-minute walk, or the pup can graduate to puppy daycare at Dogtown, where small playgroups and a gentle start are the whole point.

Who it fits
Pups cleared by the vet to be outside, and the people who cannot get home at noon
This visit is for a puppy whose vet has cleared it to be out on a leash and who has passed our free evaluation, but who is too young, too new or too small for a full day out of the house. It suits the first-time owner back at work after two weeks off with the new pup. It suits the household whose kids are at school until three and whose adults are on the train. And it suits the Cape Ann summer household whose pup arrived in June and whose people are back on the early commute by September.
It is not the right service for a puppy who cannot yet be leashed and walked outdoors on vet advice, or for a puppy who needs someone in the house all afternoon; that is a daycare day, and our puppy daycare page covers it. It is also not a group outing. Every Dogtown walk is solo, so a pup at the wobbly stage of leash training is not being dragged along at an adult dog's pace.

The visit
Twenty minutes: out, business done, a sniff, a stretch, water, photo
The walker, a member of Dogtown staff, arrives in your window and goes straight to the puppy. If the pup is crated, it is carried or walked briskly to the door, because a puppy that has been holding it will go on the first patch of floor if you dawdle. Outside, it goes to the spot you told us about, gets its praise and its treat if you use one, and then has a few minutes of leash walking and sniffing.
Back inside, paws are wiped, water is topped up, the crate or pen is checked and the pup is settled with whatever routine you have set. Then the photo and note arrive on your phone: did it go, how did the leash walk look, anything odd. From November to March the walk stays short and the paws get a proper wipe, because Gloucester sidewalks are salted and de-icers are hard on young pads. From April to November the note includes a quick tick check, since puppies spend a lot of time nose-down in the grass.

Price
$25 a visit, $225 for ten, $637 for thirty
A potty-break visit is the 20-minute walk on our price list: $25 each, $225 for a 10-pack and $637 for a 30-pack. A puppy who needs two visits a day goes through a 30-pack in about three weeks, so buy the larger pack if you know the routine will hold; it saves roughly 15 percent against single visits. When the pup can manage longer stretches, move up to the 30-minute walk at $35 rather than keeping the shorter visit.
Getting started means one weekday morning at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester. Book the free evaluation between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, bring proof of Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella and the puppy's city license, and fill in the new customer form on this site. Gloucester licenses are issued by the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave and need a current rabies certificate, so the license usually follows the last vaccine.
