Canine Good Citizen prep on Cape Ann: two routes to the test
The Canine Good Citizen test is ten everyday situations, scored pass or fail by an AKC evaluator. Most dogs can do eight of them already. The prep is about finding the two they cannot, and Cape Ann, with its summer crowds, empty winter beaches and a commuter train, is a good place to practise them.
Two routes
Canine Citizen Academy for most dogs, the Fast Track for one stubborn item
Canine Citizen Academy is the class route. It takes adolescents and adult dogs of any breed, and you pick the length: 4 weeks and 8 sessions for a dog who is nearly there, 6 weeks and 12 for the typical candidate, 8 weeks and 16 for a dog who needs more repetition around distractions. The emphasis is on dependable manners, confidence and real-world reliability, not on a polished performance in one room.
The 1:1 Private CGC Fast Track is 5 weeks and 10 sessions, all individual. It exists for the dog who fails one item over and over: the Lab who cannot stay seated when a stranger approaches, the shepherd who mutters at another dog on a walk, the hound who panics during the three-minute separation. Gabby isolates that item and rebuilds it from the ground up. It is open to all ages, and it is also the sensible choice for a dog who does not do well working near other dogs.

The ten items
What the test asks, and where on Cape Ann to rehearse it
At the time of writing the AKC's ten items are: accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming, walking on a loose leash, walking through a crowd, sit and down on cue with a stay, coming when called, reacting calmly to another dog, reacting calmly to a distraction, and a three-minute supervised separation from you. Cape Ann rehearses every one of them. The crowd item is Rockport's harbor streets on a July Saturday. The friendly stranger is anyone at the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park, met outside the fence. The loose-leash walk is the Rockport line platform, where the MBTA requires dogs leashed, off-peak and off the seats. And the recall is Good Harbor Beach in the off-season, on an even-numbered day between October 1 and March 31, when the sand is empty and the gulls are the only distraction.
Distraction and separation get built inside Dogtown first, where a dryer running in the grooming studio, a playgroup passing on the turf and a trainer stepping out of sight are all controllable. Then they move outdoors.

Sessions start from $94. We do not print a course price because the number of sessions depends on the route you take and the assessment sometimes changes it; you will know the full investment before the first session. The test itself is administered by an AKC-approved evaluator under the AKC's rules. Ask us how testing is arranged when you enroll so the dates line up with the end of your block.

A behaviorist who has fostered the dogs that fail item eight
Item eight, reaction to another dog, is where Cape Ann candidates most often stumble, and it is the item Gabriella Pope has spent the most time on. Dogtown's Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist holds a B.S. in Biochemistry, has more than ten years with behaviorally complex dogs and has fostered through Cape Ann Animal Aid. Her method is relationship-based and force-free, which matters because a dog that is genuinely relaxed around another dog holds up far better than one who is only holding still.
The building supplies the neutral dogs. Matched playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs mean there is always a steady, well-mannered adult available to walk past your dog at a distance Gabby chooses, and 10,000 square feet gives room to make that distance as long as it needs to be. Staff double as friendly strangers and as the examiner who handles paws and ears for the grooming item.

Getting here
Eastern Ave hours, the Pup Van and the license a good citizen carries
Dogtown is at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, open Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM. Dogs who combine prep with daycare or Dogtown Academy days use the drop-off windows, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and can ride the Pup Van for $10 each way from Rockport, Gloucester, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea.
A Canine Good Citizen is a licensed dog. Gloucester licenses come from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave, $20 for a spayed or neutered dog with a current rabies certificate, and they are late after April 30 with a $20 penalty; the other Cape Ann towns issue theirs at town hall. Bring the tag and your vaccination records to the assessment, since the same paperwork opens daycare and Academy days later.
