Kerry Blue grooming
Kerry Blue Terrier grooming in Gloucester, MA
A Kerry Blue is born black and clears to blue-gray, and the coat that changes color is soft, dense and wavy rather than wiry. It does not shed, which is exactly why it mats. This page covers how the Kerry trim is built, what the AKC asks of owners between visits, and what the groom costs in Gloucester.
Soft, not wire
A Kerry's coat is soft, dense and wavy, and because it does not shed, loose hair stays in until it is combed out
The breed standard is emphatic: the correct coat is soft, dense and wavy, and a harsh, wire or bristle coat is to be severely penalized. That sets the Kerry apart from the wire-coated terriers it is often grouped with, and it changes the grooming. The AKC says Kerries do not shed, so the coat must be thoroughly brushed and combed once a week to avoid matting. Hair another breed would drop on the floor stays caught in the waves.
Color is part of the story. The standard explains that a Kerry is black at birth and clears to its mature blue-gray, from deep slate to light blue-gray, passing through very dark blue and tinges of brown on the way, and that the time it takes varies with each dog. A young Kerry's coat can look different from one visit to the next while it clears. That changes neither the price nor the cut, but it is why a puppy's first grooms look nothing like an adult's.
- Texture: soft, dense and wavy, never wiry
- Shedding: next to none, so tangles build instead
- Color: black at birth, clearing to blue-gray
- Upkeep: a thorough weekly brush and comb, per the AKC
Clippers and scissors
The Kerry trim clips the head, neck, ears and belly and scissors the body, with no stripping involved
The AKC describes the trim in one line: the head, neck, ears and abdomen are done with clippers, and the coat is trimmed with scissors. The show standard asks for a body well covered but tidy, with the head, apart from the whiskers, and the ears and cheeks clear. Because the coat is soft rather than wire, stripping does not apply; a Kerry is shaped by cutting. Our full service is a bath plus a breed-specific or custom haircut, so the Kerry outline, or a shorter, easier version of it, is what you book.
The face is where you have the most say. The whiskers, the Kerry's beard, stay long in the breed trim, and the longer hair over the eyes, often called the fall, can be left full or thinned. The trimming guide from the United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club cuts the hair beside the eyes so they are visible, a sensible rule for a dog that needs to see the ball and the curb. Tell the groomer how much beard you can keep clean, and bring a photo if you have a look in mind.
- Clippered: the head, neck, ears and belly
- Scissored: the body coat and legs
- Left long: the whiskers, or beard
- Your call: how much hair stays over the eyes
On the calendar
Every six to eight weeks keeps a Kerry's coat manageable; stretch the gap and the waves start to felt
The AKC's guidance is a full grooming every six to eight weeks, together with regular brushing, which it says keeps the coat manageable. At six weeks the groomer is refreshing a shape. Stretch the gap much further and the first knots tend to form behind the ears, in the armpits, through the beard and wherever a collar or harness rubs, and on a coat this dense they sit close to the skin, where a brush that only skims the surface never reaches them.
Dematting is $15 per 20 minutes on top of the $85 full service, and the groomer assesses the coat at check-in before any work starts. Where a Kerry's coat has felted against the skin, a shorter clip that lets it grow back clean is usually kinder than a long session with a comb, and the groomer will talk that choice through with you. Booking the next visit at pick-up saves $5 and keeps you on the six-to-eight-week track.
By weight
A Kerry Blue pays $85 for the full service and $65 for a bath
The standard gives a fully developed male 33 to 40 pounds, with females proportionately less, so nearly every adult Kerry falls in our band for dogs of 26 to 50 pounds. Full service, with the bath, blow-dry, brush-out and trim, is $85; a bath alone is $65. A young Kerry still under 26 pounds is in the smaller band, at $75 and $55. Both the band and the final figure are confirmed at check-in, once the groomer has looked over the coat.
The add-ons a Kerry needs follow the AKC's care notes. It recommends trimming the nails at least once a week and cleaning the ears at least twice a month, so nail clipping, $16, belongs on every visit, with trims at home in between; whether the groomer clips or grinds is confirmed at check-in. A $10 face trim tidies the beard and eyes between full grooms, and the $10 sanitary trim keeps the belly and rear clean.

Comb day
At home, comb the whole coat to the skin once a week and keep the beard clean and dry
A weekly session with a slicker brush and a metal comb covers it. Brush in sections, then comb each section to the skin; if the comb catches, the brush missed something. Wash or wipe the beard after meals and dry it, because a wet beard holds food and smell. The club's guide adds that a Kerry does not need a bath every time it is trimmed, and warns that soap left in the coat irritates the skin, so rinse thoroughly if you bathe at home.
On Cape Ann the beach tests the beard. At the time of writing, Gloucester allows dogs off leash on Plum Cove Beach from October 1 to April 30 and keeps them off from May 1 to September 30, and a Kerry that digs at the tide line brings sand home in every wave. Rinse the coat and beard with fresh water the same day, towel it, and comb it through. In winter, rinse salt off the feet; the club's guide scissors the hair growing between the pads.
