The two-dog household: daycare, walks and grooming for a pair

A second dog changes the first one, the house and the bill. This page covers how our playgroups treat a pair, how to bring in a second dog without wrecking the first dog's routine, what grooming and overnights look like for two, and the Cape Ann rules that count dogs per person.

What changes

The pair becomes a unit, and each dog still needs to be read on its own

Two dogs who live together form a team. The confident one leads at the door, the anxious one borrows courage, and within a month they have divided up the house, the beds and you. That is mostly good. It also hides things: a dog who only copes with strangers because its housemate is there, or a first dog who has quietly stopped playing because the puppy takes every toy.

In a playgroup the two are placed by the same rule as everyone else, size and temperament, so a nine-year-old spaniel and a ten-month-old lab from the same kitchen will usually be in different circles. Most pairs do better that way; each gets a day that fits. A few pairs are genuinely lost without each other, and that shows at the evaluation, where we watch each dog alone and then the two together.

  • Confidence borrowed from a housemate can hide a dog who struggles alone
  • Groups are matched by size and temperament, so a pair is often split
  • The evaluation watches each dog alone, then the two together

The plan

Three phases: the introduction, the first month, then the standing week

The introduction needs nothing from us. Keep the first dog's routine exactly as it was, walks and daycare days included, and let the newcomer settle for two or three weeks with the crate and fixed meals every new dog needs. If the first dog already comes to Dogtown, its days are the newcomer's quiet time at home. Book the second dog's free evaluation once it is sleeping through and eating well; the two can be seen on the same weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30.

In the first month together, start the newcomer on half days at $33 while the first dog keeps its usual day, then try one day when both attend and compare the two report cards. The standing week is where the saving is: most pairs need one or two days each rather than three, because a dog with a housemate is rarely bored alone. Buy packs per dog, a half-day 10-pack at $290 or a full-day 10-pack at $380, and ask how the Pup Van is charged when both ride. A bath is from $55 by size; two can share one block.

  1. 01

Weeks 1 to 3: the newcomer settles at home; the first dog's daycare days continue unchanged

  2. 02

Week 3 or 4: the second dog's free evaluation, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, watched alone and with its housemate

  3. 03

Month 1: half days at $33 for the newcomer while the first dog keeps its usual day

  4. 04

Month 2: one shared day, then compare the report cards and decide split or together

  5. 05

The standing week: one or two days each, packs bought per dog, a groom booked into a daycare day

Cape Ann specifics

Two licenses, a two-dog limit on one beach and a town with no leash law

Every dog is licensed on its own. In Gloucester that is the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave with two rabies certificates, $20 plus a one-dollar fee for each spayed or neutered dog at the time of writing, both due by April 30. Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea, open to licensed, vaccinated dogs from October 15 to April 14 with a walk-on fee, allows two dogs per person: the one Cape Ann beach written with a pair in mind.

Gloucester's beaches take dogs from October 1 to April 30, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, and two dogs on two long lines on open sand is a skill; read the how-to on walking two dogs at once first. Essex has no leash law, which sounds like freedom and is in fact a place where your recall has to work on both dogs at once. The fenced Gloucester Dog Park separates small and large dogs, so a mismatched pair ends up on opposite sides of a fence.

  • A license for each dog, each due by April 30 in Gloucester
  • Singing Beach: two dogs per person, October 15 to April 14
  • Gloucester Dog Park splits by size, so a mismatched pair is separated

What not to do

Do not insist on one group, start both on day one or walk two on one hand

The request we hear most is to keep the two together all day. Sometimes that is right; often it means a small anxious dog spends the day in a big-dog group because its housemate is a lab. Trust the placement and read both report cards. The second mistake is starting both on the same first morning, so nobody can tell which dog is worried about what. Stagger the starts by a week.

Do not let the second dog's arrival cost the first dog its walk, its bed or its daycare day; friction between dogs in one house usually starts with a change of routine, not with the new dog itself. Do not feed the pair side by side straight after an exciting day. And do not clip two leashes to one hand on a Rockport sidewalk, where the rule is a leash or direct voice control and a tangled pair has neither.

  • No forcing one playgroup on a mismatched pair
  • No starting both dogs on the same morning
  • No cutting the first dog's routine to make room for the second

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can my two dogs be in the same playgroup?
If size and temperament put them there, yes, and many pairs are. If one is a small senior and the other a young large dog, they will be in different circles, and most do better for it. Our handlers watch the two alone and together at the evaluation, and the report cards tell you how each dog spent the day.
Do I get a discount for two dogs?
Prices are per dog: $42 a full day, $33 a half day, with packs at $150, $200, $290 and $380, and each suite is $78 a night. The saving with a pair usually comes from the schedule rather than a discount, because two dogs at home together often need fewer days than two singles. Ask the front desk about current offers.
Can both dogs share one overnight suite?
Ask the front desk when you book; the two-dog boarding page on this site covers how sharing works and what each dog should bring. Each suite is $78 a night. Dogs who sleep together at home usually settle faster together, and both join their daytime playgroups as usual, which may be different groups.
Should the new dog start daycare on the first dog's day?
Not on the very first morning. Stagger the starts so our handlers and you can read each dog on its own; the newcomer's first half day at $33 should fall on a day the first dog is at home. Once both have settled, try a shared day and compare the report cards.
