Singing Beach is the North Shore's famous squeaking sand, a short walk from the Manchester station, and one of the few beaches in the region that asks to see a dog's paperwork. Here is what the town requires, how the season and the fee work, what the beach asks of your dog, and how Dogtown fits for a Manchester dog.

The rule

October 15 to April 14, licensed and vaccinated, two dogs per person

Manchester-by-the-Sea runs the shortest of the Cape Ann dog seasons and attaches the most conditions. Dogs are allowed on Singing Beach from October 15 to April 14. The dog must be licensed and vaccinated, which in Manchester means a town license that runs April 1 to March 31 at $20, or $25 if the dog is not spayed or neutered, with a current rabies certificate behind it. One person may bring two dogs at most. These are the terms as posted at the time of writing; the town's dog license page carries the current version.

The walk-on fee is the part that surprises visitors. When beach staff are on duty, walk-on visitors pay to enter, and a dog walker is a walk-on visitor. Which hours are staffed and what the fee is are the town's to set, and they change, so check before you go rather than arriving with your wallet in the car.

Two dates frame the season. The April 14 close comes two weeks after Gloucester shuts Good Harbor for piping plovers on April 1, and spring fencing for nesting birds can appear on any sand beach in the region; a roped section is closed to dogs whatever the calendar says. The October 15 open is two weeks after Gloucester's October 1. Verified in fall 2026.

What it asks of your dog

Paperwork first, then a leash at the gate and manners for a busy beach

Singing Beach asks something of the owner before the dog: a license in the current year and vaccines on file. Carry the tag on the collar and keep a photo of the rabies certificate on your phone. The two-dog limit means a dog walker with a group cannot use the beach, and a family with three dogs needs two adults. At the gate and along the bathhouse the beach is narrow and busy, so a leash there is simple good manners even where the town's rule allows more.

The beach itself is a crescent of fine sand between rocky points, and it is popular; on a mild winter weekend your dog will meet a dozen others. That calls for a reliable recall, a calm greeting and an owner who can end a game. The water is cold and the sand is where dogs pick up salt and grit; bring fresh water, keep drinking from the surf to a minimum, and rinse paws and belly before the walk back to the car or the train.

How Dogtown fits

The Pup Van to Manchester, the train rules and the bath

Manchester-by-the-Sea is one of the four Pup Van towns, so a Singing Beach dog can be collected at home for $10 each way and spend a closed-season day, April 15 to October 14, in a Dogtown playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs for $42 a full day or $33 a half day. If you commute on the Rockport line from Manchester station, the MBTA allows leashed non-service dogs only off-peak, at staff discretion, never on seats, and not between 7 and 10 AM or 4 and 7 PM, which is one more reason the van exists.

After a Singing Beach walk, the fine sand goes everywhere. A bath-only groom at our Eastern Ave studio in Gloucester starts at $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds and is priced by size from there. Grooming needs no evaluation. Daycare, overnight stays and at-home walks do; the free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30, and we will ask to see the same license and vaccine records the beach does.

Nearby

Coolidge Reservation, the Gloucester beaches and the calendar

Coolidge Reservation, a few minutes up the coast, allows dogs only on the short leg from the trailhead and not on its beach, so it is a leash walk, not a swim; the Trustees' page has the detail. Gloucester's Good Harbor takes dogs on even dates from October 1 to March 31 and Wingaersheek on odd dates from October 1 to April 30, which covers the two weeks before Singing Beach opens and the two after it closes.

Crane Beach in Ipswich runs October 1 to March 31 on leash under the Trustees. Rockport's beaches reopen to dogs on September 16 under a leash or direct voice control rule, a month before Singing Beach does.

Does my dog need to be licensed to go to Singing Beach?
Yes. Manchester-by-the-Sea requires dogs on Singing Beach to be licensed and vaccinated at the time of writing. A Manchester license runs April 1 to March 31 and costs $20, or $25 for a dog that is not spayed or neutered, with a current rabies certificate. Dogs licensed in another town should carry that town's tag. The town's dog license page has the current terms.
How much is the Singing Beach walk-on fee for dog walkers?
The town sets the fee and the staffed hours during which it is collected, and both can change, so we do not print a figure here. Read the Manchester-by-the-Sea dog license page or call the town before your first visit of the season. The fee applies while staff are on duty; arriving without knowing the hours is the most common mistake.
Can I bring three dogs to Singing Beach?
Not with one person. The town limits each person to two dogs at the time of writing, so three dogs need two adults. Professional walkers with larger groups cannot use the beach. If you have more dogs than hands, a daycare day at Dogtown for the third dog, with the Pup Van at $10 each way from Manchester, solves it.
Can I take my dog to Singing Beach on the train?
The beach is a short walk from Manchester station, and the MBTA allows leashed non-service dogs on the commuter rail only off-peak, at staff discretion, never on seats, and not between 7 and 10 AM or 4 and 7 PM. Read the MBTA rider rules before you plan on it, and have a fallback if a conductor says no on the day.
