After a bad daycare experience: starting again, slowly
Some dogs arrive at our evaluation with a story: a bite at another facility, a day that ended at the vet, a dog that stopped eating for a week. This page is the plan we give those families, and the questions worth asking any daycare, including us.

A single bad day can teach a dog something it took months to learn the other way: that a room full of dogs means fear. The dog that used to pull toward the car now plants its feet at the door. Some dogs go the other way and become sharp with dogs they used to ignore on walks. It is a prediction from evidence, not stubbornness.
The size of the problem depends on what happened. A dog that was frightened by a rough group and shut down needs time and better experiences. A dog that was bitten needs a vet first and then the same. A dog that did the biting needs our bite-history page first. The mistake to avoid is going straight from one daycare to another in the same week.

The plan

Take two or three weeks off from anything that looks like a group. Use the break for small good things: a walk with one calm dog you know, a quiet hour on the off-season beach on a long line, meals and sleep at the same times every day. When the dog is eating, sleeping and greeting you as it used to, send the new customer form and tell us everything that happened.
The free evaluation, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, is a temperament test and then, only if the handler is comfortable, a few supervised hours in a group. The answer may be not yet, and we will say why. If it is yes, start with a half day at $33 in a group of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, and read the report card.

Cape Ann specifics
The Cape Ann specifics: the off-season beach as neutral ground, a park to skip, the evaluation window, and the hospital in Woburn
The off-season beach is the best neutral ground on Cape Ann: Gloucester's beaches allow dogs from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, and a long line on open sand lets a dog see another dog at a distance. Skip the fenced, off-leash Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort until the dog has done well in a group again.
If the bad day ended with an injury, your own vet is the first call, and after hours Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open around the clock. Ollie's Law, signed in September 2024, has put daycare and boarding standards in front of MDAR, with regulations due in 2026. Our evaluation runs only on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30, so plan the return for a week when someone can be there.

What not to do

Do not book a new daycare for the Monday after a bad Friday. Do not leave the story off the new customer form; it is the single most useful thing our handlers can know, and it changes which group we try first. Do not carry or drag a dog through a door it is refusing; a dog that plants its feet at Dogtown is telling us the evaluation should stop there for today.
Do not decide from one bad day that your dog is not a daycare dog. Watch pick-up for a month: a dog that comes out loose and sleeps the evening is doing well, and one that comes out frantic or flat needs a shorter day or a different route. Our training team's Adventure Academy is the socialization path for dogs that need controlled introductions first, from $94 per session.
