Dogs with a bite history: what Dogtown can and cannot offer
Bite history is the one question owners are most tempted to leave off the form. This page explains what a bite changes about the daycare question, what we can do, what we will not do, and how the plan usually runs.
What changes
What a bite changes: the question stops being whether your dog likes dogs and becomes what happened, to whom, and why
A bite is information we have to read carefully. A dog that snapped at a child who fell on it while it slept is a different case from a dog that bit a stranger's hand at the door. Fear, pain, guarding and redirected excitement all produce bites, and each asks a different question of a playgroup. The first thing we want is the story: what happened, when, to whom, and what came just before.
A group asks a great deal of a dog. Strangers' hands on its collar, other dogs in tight spaces at the gate, shared water, a pool, arousal that climbs through the morning. A dog that has bitten once under stress is a dog we place with caution or not at all, because our handlers are responsible for the other nine dogs in the circle. That is where the evaluation starts.

The plan
The plan, stage by stage: disclose, assess, train, and revisit the group question months later rather than weeks
Stage one is disclosure and a vet. Put the full history on the new customer form, and if the bite came with a sudden change in the dog, ask your vet to rule out pain. Stage two is the free evaluation, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM: a temperament test, then, if the handler is comfortable, a few supervised hours in a group. The handler may stop before the group. If so, we say why.
Stage three is a behavior consultation, the short assessment every training client starts with, and from there a program: Polished Pup is written for resource guarding and fear-based reactivity; React Less, Relax More is the program for reactivity. Sessions start from $94 and enquiries go through the contact form. Stage four, months on, is Adventure Academy, the socialization path for dog-selective dogs, and then a second evaluation with the same honest answer.

Cape Ann specifics
The Cape Ann specifics: leash rules by town, a park to skip, a beach on a long line, and Ollie's Law
A dog with a bite history should be leashed in every Cape Ann town. Gloucester's dog regulations are on the city site; Rockport asks for a leash or direct voice control at the time of writing; Essex has no leash law. Skip the fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort. Better: the off-season beach, October 1 to April 30 in Gloucester, Good Harbor on even days and Wingaersheek on odd, on a long line.
Ollie's Law was signed on September 20, 2024 and took effect on December 19, 2024, and MDAR's regulations for daycare and boarding facilities are due in 2026. The direction is toward clearer standards for how facilities like ours assess and group dogs, and your honest history is part of that. A current rabies vaccine is on our list of requirements for every dog, and after any bite it is the first thing a vet asks about.

What not to do
What not to do: hide the bite, test the dog at the park, punish the growl, or ask us for a promise
Do not leave the bite off the form. Our handlers will read the dog anyway, and a history that surfaces after an incident is worse for everyone. Do not take the dog to the Gloucester Dog Park to see how it does; that experiment uses other people's dogs. Do not punish a growl, since a growl is the warning that comes before a bite, and a dog that learns to skip it is more dangerous, not less.
Do not ask us to promise a place in a group. What we can promise is a straight answer after the evaluation, a route through our training team, a grooming appointment where the groomer knows the history and the $20 behavior or handling surcharge covers slower work, and a front desk that will talk it through with you at 978 491-5922. If the answer to the group is no, that is an answer about today.
