Whippet care on Cape Ann
The AKC traces the Whippet to Victorian coal miners who wanted a smaller Greyhound, and says mill workers later brought the breed to north-central Massachusetts, where it caught on. It stands 18 to 22 inches and weighs 25 to 40 pounds. Our Whippet board-and-train page covers recall training; this guide covers the rhythm of the day, the cold and the places a Whippet can run safely.
Sprints and naps
Sprints and naps: a Whippet's energy comes in short, explosive bursts
The AKC describes a dog that is calm in the house, saves its energy for explosive bursts of running, and between them loves to stretch out and relax for long hours. Its suggested exercise is several vigorous retrieving sessions a week with a ball or disc, regular walks, or play with another dog in a safely fenced area. The trait chart gives four out of five for energy, five for getting along with other dogs and one, the lowest score, for barking.
A daycare day suits that rhythm only when rest is built in. Our playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs are matched by size, play style and temperament, and many Whippets prefer a chase to a wrestle; a lean sprinter does best with partners that run rather than body-slam. Whether a full day at $42 or a half day at $33 suits your dog is something we work out at the free evaluation and the first few visits, not something the breed decides.
- Several vigorous retrieving sessions a week, per the AKC
- Play with other dogs only inside a fence
- Long naps after a run are normal, not a sign of illness
- Chase partners rather than wrestlers in a playgroup
Cold sensitivity
Cold sensitivity: a short, thin coat on a nor'easter morning
The AKC calls the Whippet's coat short and smooth, needing little beyond a weekly brush, and that is about all the insulation the dog carries. VCA's winter advice suggests a sweater for short-haired breeds, booties or paw wax against de-icing chemicals, and walks of only 5 to 10 minutes when it is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It also warns that frostbite and hypothermia can occur when a pet is wet and exposed to frosty air, which describes a Whippet after a winter run on wet sand.
Watch the dog as well as the thermometer. VCA names shivering and whining as signs of discomfort, and a Whippet that hunches, lifts its feet or turns for home has had enough. A raw wind off the water makes a winter morning feel colder than the number suggests, so carry a fitted coat for the walk home, towel the dog dry before the car and keep cold-weather outings short and brisk. Our answer on how cold is too cold covers the general limits.
- 01
Fit a coat that covers the chest and belly, not only the back
- 02
Check the wind and the forecast before a winter beach walk
- 03
Keep walks to 5 to 10 minutes below 20 degrees, as VCA suggests
- 04
Towel the dog dry before it gets into the car
- 05
Wipe de-icing chemicals off the paws after sidewalk walks
Safe recall areas
Safe places to run: fenced ground first, open beaches on a long line
Because the AKC advises keeping a Whippet on lead outside a fenced area, the Cape Ann question is where the fences are. The Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park is fenced, with a small-dog section for dogs under 25 pounds and a large-dog area for bigger dogs, plus a separate agility arena and Tino's Corner for dogs who prefer to play alone. Most Whippets, at 25 to 40 pounds, belong on the large side, and a quiet weekday visit lets a sighthound open up without a crowd.
Unfenced places are leash places for this breed. Ravenswood Park appears on The Trustees' off-leash list, and Crane Beach in Ipswich allows dogs off leash only inside its marked zones from October 1 to March 31, but a sighthound that sees a rabbit or a gull will not stop at a zone boundary. On off-season beaches such as Wingaersheek, open to dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30, use a long line and a harness cut for a deep chest.
- Fenced: the Gloucester Dog Park, large-dog side or Tino's Corner
- Unfenced trails and beaches: a leash or a long line
- A harness that fits a deep chest and a narrow waist
- Lure coursing or agility, the outlets the AKC suggests
Lean weight and health
A lean Whippet is a healthy Whippet, and the other health notes
The AKC is specific: an adult Whippet should show two to four vertebrae, its hipbones should not sink into dimples of fat, and a dog at a healthy weight will likely look skinny to people used to heavier breeds. Friends may tell you your dog is too thin. Ask your vet instead, and keep portions steady for life, which the AKC says extends a Whippet's life and avoids painful, expensive orthopedic problems. Count training treats as part of the day's food.
Responsible breeders screen for cardiac disease, deafness and eye disorders, the AKC says, so ask for the parents' results. The coat needs only a weekly brush and an occasional bath, $65 at Dogtown for a Whippet of 26 to 50 pounds or $55 for a smaller one. The AKC also asks for regular ear checks and frequent nail trims when the nails are not worn down naturally; nail clipping is $16. A Whippet that limps after a run should see your vet.
