Scent hounds

Beagle care on Cape Ann

Beagles were bred to hunt in packs and to be followed on foot, and the AKC describes them as sociable, easygoing and happiest in company. On this coast the same nose that makes them good company finds every dead crab on the tide line and every scent trail into Dogtown Common.

Recall limits

Recall limits: a scent hound's nose outvotes its training

The AKC is direct about it: walks must always be on a leash, because a scenthound with a strong hunting instinct will not be able to resist running off after a compelling scent. It also calls beagles escape artists and suggests a fence at least five feet tall that extends underground. None of that means a beagle cannot learn a recall. It means the recall competes with the strongest thing in the dog's head, and on an open beach the scent usually wins.

The off-season beaches are tempting. At the time of writing Gloucester allows dogs off leash on Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31 and on Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30. For a beagle, a long line gives the freedom of the sand without the chase into the dunes; our how-to on teaching recall on the beach explains the method. The fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park is the safer place for an off-leash run.

  • On leash or a long line everywhere outside a fence, as the AKC advises
  • A fence at least five feet tall that goes below ground at home
  • Recall practice with high-value food, in small doses
  • Off-leash running inside the fenced Gloucester Dog Park

Beach scavenging

Beach scavenging: what a beagle finds on the sand, and what to do about it

A beagle on a winter beach works the tide line like a vacuum on a leash: dead fish and crabs, gull scraps, bait left on the rocks, seaweed and whatever came in overnight. Some of it only smells; some of it, like old bait with the hook still in it, means a trip to the vet. Keep the leash short near the seaweed line, carry treats good enough to trade for a find, and teach a solid leave it at home long before beach season.

If your beagle swallows something you think could be toxic or sharp, call your vet. ASPCA Animal Poison Control answers at (888) 426-4435, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and a consultation fee may apply. Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open around the clock for emergencies. Save both numbers in your phone before the beaches reopen to dogs on October 1.

Weight

Weight: a beagle's appetite is the health risk you can control

The AKC notes that beagles can be prone to getting overweight and that too many treats cause obesity. VCA defines a dog 10 to 20 percent above its ideal weight as overweight and more than 20 percent above as obese, and links obesity to diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis and a shorter life. VCA's advice is to keep treats to no more than 10 percent of the day's calories and to stay consistent with portions and meal times.

That matters at daycare too, because several enrichment add-ons involve food. If your vet has your beagle on a diet, tell us, and lean on the add-ons that work the nose and the legs. The AKC says beagles need at least an hour of exercise every day, and a full day in a matched playgroup covers that many times over.

The pack hound

At daycare a beagle is a pack hound with company, which is what it wants

Beagles were bred to work in packs, and the AKC says they are happiest with company and tend to become destructive when left alone for long periods. A playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament is close to the breed's idea of a good day. The AKC recognizes two varieties, 13 inches and under at under 20 pounds and 13 to 15 inches at 20 to 30 pounds, so most beagles join small or medium dogs whose play is a chase and a sniff rather than a wrestle.

Beagles are vocal, and the AKC's history credits the breed with a musical voice; expect some baying in a group of friends. The free evaluation, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, is where we see who your beagle plays with, so bring Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license. The AKC calls treats a huge aid in training and recommends patience and positive reinforcement, which makes an Academy day at $89 a natural fit for a food-motivated hound.

  • Company most of the day, which the AKC says the breed needs
  • Small or medium group by size, with dogs that chase and sniff
  • Some baying in play is normal for the breed
  • Academy days at $89 suit a food-motivated learner

Coat, ears, health

A wash-and-go coat, weekly ear checks and the screening list

The AKC describes a smooth, dense double coat that grows heavier in winter and sheds in spring, with moderate shedding year-round, and says beagles rarely need a bath unless they get into something messy, which on a Cape Ann beach is likely. Weekly brushing with a hound glove or rubber mitt keeps the shed down. At Dogtown a bath is $55 up to 25 pounds or $65 from 26 to 50, Shed Release adds $10 in spring, and nail clipping is $16.

The AKC suggests checking a beagle's ears weekly and brushing its teeth regularly, and lists hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, luxating patella and eye disorders among the conditions responsible breeders screen for. Ask the breeder for the results. From April to November, after a nose-down ramble through Dogtown Common or Ravenswood Park, check the head, ears and legs to the skin for ticks before you drive home.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can a beagle ever be trusted off leash?
The AKC's answer is to keep walks on a leash, because a beagle will follow a strong scent rather than come back. Some beagles develop a good recall, but the risk on an open beach or trail is real. Use a long line for freedom, and let the dog run off leash only inside a fence, such as the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park.
What should I do if my beagle eats something on the beach?
Call your vet if you are worried about what it swallowed, and do not wait for signs if it might be toxic or sharp. ASPCA Animal Poison Control is reachable at (888) 426-4435 around the clock, and a consultation fee may apply. Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn handles emergencies 24 hours a day.
How do I keep my beagle from getting fat?
Measure meals, count training treats into the day, and keep treats to no more than 10 percent of daily calories, as VCA advises. Weigh the dog every month and ask your vet for its ideal weight. Exercise helps; the AKC suggests at least an hour a day, and a full daycare day at $42 covers that easily.
Is a beagle a good daycare dog?
Usually a very good one. Beagles were bred to work in packs, and the AKC says they are happiest with company and can turn destructive when left alone for long periods. At Dogtown a beagle joins a playgroup of 7 to 10 matched by size and temperament after the free weekday evaluation. Expect some happy baying.
How often does a beagle need a bath?
Rarely, unless it rolls in something, which on a Cape Ann beach is likely. The AKC suggests weekly brushing with a hound glove and only occasional baths. At Dogtown a bath is $55 for a beagle up to 25 pounds or $65 from 26 to 50, with Shed Release at $10 during the spring shed. Grooming needs no evaluation.
