Siberian huskies on Cape Ann: the coat blow-out and the snow days

Huskies were bred to run all day in a climate colder than ours, and they bring that engine and that coat into a Gloucester household. Here is what our groomers and handlers have learned about the breed at 210 Eastern Ave: when the coat lets go, how to keep the dog inside the fence, and why January is its favorite month.

The coat

The coat blows twice a year, and the bath is what moves it

A husky has two layers: a woolly undercoat and a straight outer coat of guard hairs. Twice a year, a few weeks in spring and again in early fall, the undercoat releases all at once and looks like a second dog coming loose on the kitchen floor. Between blows a husky sheds lightly and stays surprisingly clean, because the guard hairs shrug off dirt and carry little odor. So a husky needs fewer baths than a retriever, but needs them at exactly the right moment.

Our groomers' general practice is a bath every 8 to 12 weeks, then a bath with Shed Release in the first week of each blow: the bath opens the coat, the high-velocity dryer lifts the loose undercoat out in sheets, and the brush-out finishes it. Huskies are never shaved or clipped here. The double coat insulates against a July afternoon on the turf as much as a February wind off Gloucester Harbor, and a shaved coat can grow back uneven for a year.

The snow days

This coast gives a husky the winter it wants and a summer to be managed through

Cape Ann winters are the husky months. When a nor'easter drops eight inches on Eastern Ave, most dogs want the indoor play floors; the huskies want the turf yard, and our handlers rotate their group outside through the snow in short blocks. Dogtown Common, 3,600 acres of woods and boulders behind the city, is the breed's ideal winter walk, and Good Harbor Beach lets dogs on even-numbered days from October 1 until the plover closure on April 1.

July and August are the other story. A coat built for the Siberian cold holds heat in a humid Gloucester afternoon, and a husky will keep running long past the point it should have stopped, so in summer our groups go out early and late and huskies come in for water before they look tired. Salt is the winter hazard: rinse the feet in warm water after salted sidewalks, and check between the toes for ice balls after snow.

  • Snow days on the turf are the breed's favorite days at daycare
  • Summer walks before 9 AM or after 6 PM, never on hot pavement
  • Warm-water foot rinse after salt, ice-ball check after snow

Energy and the gate

A husky plays hard, runs far and treats every open gate as an invitation

Huskies were bred to pull a sled for hours, and the drive to keep going did not leave when the sled did. In a playgroup that means a dog who runs in wide loops, wrestles with a friend its own size and talks the whole time; the yips and howls are normal, and our handlers read them as conversation rather than conflict. A husky's best playmates are athletic dogs of 40 to 70 pounds, so most huskies land in our active large group.

The breed's other famous trait is escaping. Huskies dig, climb, squeeze and wait for the moment a gate swings, and our handlers treat every husky as a flight risk between the car and the front door. Please walk yours in on a leash with a secure collar or harness, as we ask of every dog, and never let a young husky off leash anywhere on Cape Ann that is not fully fenced. Recall in this breed is a lifelong project.

  • Loops, chase and wrestling with dogs of a similar size
  • Leash and secure collar from the car to the door, every visit
  • Off leash only inside a full fence, such as the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park

What we watch

Health notes our team watches for on a husky

Heat first. The AVMA's guidance on pets and hot weather warns about thick-coated breeds, and a husky in a Gloucester August is exactly that dog: we shorten outdoor blocks, keep water in reach and move a panting husky inside before it slows down on its own. At home, a dog that lies flat on cool tile and will not get up has been out too long. Ask your vet about your own dog's tolerance, especially if it carries extra weight.

Feet second, because of the fur between the toes and the mileage the breed puts on. We check pads after snow blocks and long turf sessions, and our groomers trim the toe fur on request so ice and salt have less to hold onto. Beyond that, the AKC's breed guidance names eye conditions and hips as what responsible breeders screen for; a daycare team cannot assess either, so book those checks with your vet and tell us if your dog's movement changes.

Dogtown for huskies

How a husky's week at Dogtown fits together

Most huskies do best on full daycare days at $42, because a half day leaves them an evening of energy to spend on your baseboards; a 10-pack is $380. Owners who commute on the Rockport line, which bans dogs during the 7 to 10 AM and 4 to 7 PM peaks anyway, drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM and collect between 4 and 6:30 PM, and the Pup Van reaches Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way.

For a husky whose energy is really a lack of focus, Dogtown Academy at $89 a day adds treadmill work, scent games and a daily training block, with a report card at pick-up. Grooming needs no evaluation and fits onto a daycare day, so the spring Shed Release happens while your dog is already in the building, and a stand-alone treadmill session is a $10 add-on that suits this breed better than almost any other.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How often should a husky be bathed in the Gloucester climate?
Every 8 to 12 weeks is the general practice, with an extra bath and Shed Release at the start of each coat blow, usually March or April and again in September or October. Huskies stay clean between baths because the guard hairs shed dirt, so bathing more often strips oils for little benefit. A bath at Dogtown is $65 or $75 by weight and Shed Release is $10.
Can a husky be shaved for the summer?
No, and we will not do it. The undercoat is what a husky sheds in the blow; the guard hairs left behind protect the skin from sun and hold a layer of cool air against it. A shaved double coat can grow back patchy for a year or more, and a proper de-shed bath removes far more heat-trapping fur than a clipper does.
Does Dogtown let huskies out in the snow?
Yes, in supervised blocks. When snow sends most groups onto the indoor floors, the huskies in the active group still rotate through the turf yard, and it is the happiest you will see them. Our handlers check feet and bring dogs in to warm up between blocks. If a nor'easter changes our hours, check the Dogtown app or call 978 491-5922 before you set out.
Will a husky escape from the Dogtown yard?
We treat every husky as a dog that will try. Every dog arrives on a leash with a secure collar or harness, a handler stays with each group the whole time, and huskies are placed where a handler can see every dog. At home a husky needs a full fence, an owner who never trusts an open gate, and recall training that never really ends.
