Cape Ann winter is not one thing. Some weeks bring hard sand and low sun and the best walks of the year; others bring glazed trails, salted sidewalks and a nor'easter that closes everything. This page sorts the walks by footing, covers salt and paws, and says what we can do when the light runs out early.

The sand

From October 1 to April 30 the Gloucester beaches are the winter walk

Gloucester's public beaches open to dogs from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, on a schedule that changes by beach. Good Harbor takes dogs on even-numbered days and closes to them from April 1 for piping plovers; Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days; Plum Cove and Cressy take dogs in the off-season. Packed sand at low tide is the firmest footing on Cape Ann in January.

Rockport bans dogs from its public beaches from June 1 to September 15 and requires a leash or direct voice control the rest of the year, so its beaches are open all winter. Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea takes licensed, vaccinated dogs from October 15 to April 14, two per person, with a walk-on fee while staff are on duty. Crane Beach in Ipswich takes leashed dogs from October 1 to March 31. The beach calendar on this site lists every date.

The trails

Wooded trails hold ice; pick the walks with sun and drainage, or wait

The problem with Ravenswood, Dogtown Common and the Greenbelt trails in January is not the cold, it is the glaze. Shaded Cape Ann woods hold ice for weeks after a thaw on the roads, and the granite that makes the trails interesting in October makes them treacherous in February. A dog slips less than you do, but not never, and a wrenched shoulder on ice is a bad way to end a walk.

When the trails are iced, the footing holds in three places: the beach at low tide, the plowed lanes of a quiet neighborhood, and the fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park, 65 Hough Ave, two acres with separate small-dog and large-dog areas. Halibut Point in Rockport is a leashed, exposed quarry-rim walk that is glorious on a still day and brutal in wind. Check the National Weather Service Boston forecast for wind chill before you commit.

Salt and paws

Salt burns pads and gets licked off; rinse after every sidewalk walk

Road salt and the de-icers on Cape Ann sidewalks dry and crack pads, and a dog that licks its paws after a walk swallows them. The routine is short. Rinse the paws in lukewarm water at the door or wipe each one with a wet cloth, dry between the toes, and trim the hair there so ice balls do not form. Paw balm helps some dogs; boots help the ones that tolerate them.

The ice itself cuts. Refrozen snow along a plowed road has sharp edges, and a dog running on it can slice a pad without slowing down. Check pads for cuts when you dry the feet, and watch for limping on the way home. Long-haired dogs also collect ice in clumps on the belly fur, and the clumps melt into a wet, cold coat.

How Dogtown fits

The hardest part of a Cape Ann winter is not the cold, it is that the light is gone by the time the Rockport line pulls in. Our team walks dogs from their own front door: 20 minutes for $25, 30 for $35 or 60 for $55, solo, with a photo and a note after each walk. A 10-pack of 30-minute walks is $315. Availability depends on the address and the season, so ask us first.

A daycare day covers the exercise on the days the walk is not happening: $42 for a full day, $33 for a half, in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs on the turf yard when it is clear and the indoor play floors when it is not. The Pup Van collects for $10 each way in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. In a nor'easter, check the app for a closure notice.

The bath after a salty week is $55 for a small dog and up to $95 for an extra-large long coat, and it needs no evaluation. Ask our groomers to trim the hair between the pads and clip the nails while the dog is on the table. Walking dogs, unlike grooming dogs, do the free evaluation first, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM.

Which Cape Ann beaches allow dogs in winter?

At the time of writing, Gloucester's public beaches allow dogs from October 1 to April 30, with Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd; Rockport's beaches are open to dogs outside the June 1 to September 15 ban; Singing Beach takes dogs from October 15 to April 14; and Crane Beach takes leashed dogs from October 1 to March 31.

How cold is too cold to walk a dog on Cape Ann?

It depends on the dog, the wind and the wet, which is why the AVMA's cold-weather page gives signs to watch rather than a number: shivering, lifting paws, slowing down, looking for shelter. Wind chill off the water makes a Cape Ann beach colder than the thermometer says, so check the forecast for wind before an exposed walk.

Do I need to wash salt off my dog's paws every time?

After every walk on a salted road or sidewalk, yes. A quick rinse in lukewarm water or a wipe with a wet cloth, then a dry between the toes, takes a minute and prevents cracked pads and a dog licking de-icer off its feet. A bath at Dogtown handles the salty coat.
