Samoyed care on Cape Ann

The Samoyede people lived in tents and huddled with their dogs for warmth through Arctic nights, and the AKC traces the breed's closeness to people to that history. Even the famous smile is practical: the upturned mouth keeps drool from freezing on the face. This guide covers the coat, the heat, the voice and the social life of a Samoyed on this coast.

Mud season

A white coat in mud season: walk on sand when you can, and dry before you brush

March and April turn Cape Ann trails to mud, and a Samoyed wears every bit of it. The AKC describes a harsh outer coat over a soft, thick, woolly undercoat and asks for daily brushing to remove dirt and loose hair; mud left to dry in that wool packs into knots. The Trustees close Ravenswood's trails to mountain bikes from March 1 to April 30 for the muddy season, which tells you what the footing is like for a white dog.

One local answer is to walk where the ground is sand. At the time of writing Wingaersheek allows dogs off leash on odd-numbered days through April 30, and Plum Cove and Cressy's take dogs through April 30 too, while Good Harbor closes to dogs on April 1 to protect nesting piping plovers. Sand falls out of a dry Samoyed coat far more readily than trail mud. Keep the leash or a long line on, though: the AKC says the breed has a strong urge to run off and roam.

  2. 02

Rinse the legs and belly before the dog reaches the house

  3. 03

Blot the water out; do not scrub the wool

  4. 04

Let the coat dry fully on the mat or in a crate

  5. 05

Brush and comb once dry, working out from the skin

July heat

Heat in July: an Arctic dog on a humid Gloucester afternoon

The AKC calls the Samoyed coat impervious to cold, bred for places where minus 60 degrees is common, and VCA says that in warm weather a Samoyed is usually happier in air-conditioning. VCA lists hard exercise in hot weather, and being left without shade or water, among the common causes of heat stroke, and notes that excited or heavily exercised dogs can be at risk even when the weather does not seem very hot. A Samoyed playing flat out on a humid July afternoon is that dog.

So summer runs on the clock. Walk before the heat builds and after it fades, on grass rather than pavement, with water and shade within reach. Know VCA's first aid: cool, not cold, water on the head, belly, armpits and feet, a fan, and the drive to the vet; Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open 24 hours. Leave the clippers alone. The AKC explains that the undercoat helps a dog regulate its temperature, so clearing loose wool is the useful job, not removing the coat.

  • Walks before the heat builds and after it fades
  • Grass and shade instead of pavement and open sand
  • Cool water on head, belly, armpits and feet if it overheats
  • Loose wool cleared, coat left on

The voice

A talkative dog: why a Samoyed barks, howls and comments

The AKC rates the Samoyed five out of five for barking, the top of its scale, and four for watchdog nature. VCA notes that a bored Samoyed tends to dig and howl and may get into mischief, and the AKC says a Sammy left in solitary confinement in the yard becomes a miserable and destructive creature. Much of the noise is about company. A Samoyed alone in a Cape Ann backyard on a gray winter afternoon will let the whole street know about it.

Company is the remedy that works best, and daycare is one form of it, if the evaluation shows group play suits your dog. Our playgroups of 7 to 10 are matched by size and temperament, and a talkative player is nothing unusual in a group. At home, more time inside with the family, chews and puzzle toys, and less time alone in the yard cut the boredom barking. Our Samoyed board-and-train page covers teaching quiet and settle at the door.

The social dog

A social dog that wants people, with friendliness at the top of the scale

The AKC rates the Samoyed five out of five for openness to strangers, playfulness, affection with family and being good with young children, and three for getting along with other dogs. VCA calls the breed sociable with strangers, children, dogs and other pets, a fast learner that can be independent and stubborn and does best with reward-based training using food or games. The AKC asks for structure: teach what is expected early and practice it often.

That friendliness is easy to love and needs managing on a busy summer street in Rockport or downtown Gloucester, where a Samoyed wants to greet everyone. A Dogtown Academy day, $89 full or $69 half, adds a trainer session to play and enrichment, and gives a social dog practice at being calm in company. The AKC also warns that a loose Sammy might travel for miles, so keep the leash on and the gate latched. The Pup Van covers four Cape Ann towns for $10 each way.

  • Five out of five for openness to strangers, per the AKC
  • Reward-based training with food or games, per VCA
  • Structure taught early and practiced often
  • A latched gate and a leash for a dog that roams

Health notes

Hips, eyes and heart: the Samoyed screening list

The AKC calls Samoyeds generally healthy and names hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal dysplasia with oculoskeletal dysplasia, and cardiac and eye disease among the possible issues. Its recommended tests are a hip evaluation, a cardiac exam, an eye exam and DNA tests for retinal dysplasia with oculoskeletal dysplasia and for X-linked progressive retinal atrophy. Ask the breeder for results, and keep up the regular vet checkups and parasite control the AKC names as part of a long, healthy life.

VCA adds that some Samoyeds are inclined to be overweight and that the thick coat can hide it, so check with your hands, not your eyes. The AKC asks for teeth brushed often with a dog toothpaste and nails trimmed every three to four weeks. At Dogtown teeth brushing is a $10 add-on and nail clipping $16 on any bath, and a Samoyed of 26 to 50 pounds is a $65 bath. Grooming needs no evaluation, and a groom can be added to a daycare day.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How do I keep a white Samoyed clean in mud season?
Rinse the legs and belly at the door, blot the water out, let the coat dry, then brush it with a slicker and a metal comb, as the AKC suggests for tangles. Choose sand over trail mud where you can; at the time of writing Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days through April 30. Book a bath, $65 or $75 by weight, when brushing no longer brings the white back.
Is daycare a good idea for a Samoyed in summer?
If the free evaluation places your dog in a group, it can be, with the heat in mind: a morning drop-off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, a $33 half day on the hottest days, and a coat brushed free of loose wool. VCA says Samoyeds are usually happier in air-conditioning in warm weather, so tell us how your dog copes at home.
Why is my Samoyed so loud?
Partly because the breed is. The AKC rates the Samoyed five out of five for barking, and VCA notes that a bored Samoyed tends to howl and dig. Much of the noise is about company and boredom, so more time with people, chews and puzzle toys, and less time alone in the yard usually help more than any correction.
Is a Samoyed friendly with strangers and other dogs?
With people, very: the AKC rates openness to strangers five out of five, and VCA calls the breed sociable with strangers, children, dogs and other pets. The AKC rates getting along with other dogs at three, so individuals vary, which is why daycare placement is decided at the free evaluation rather than by breed.
What health tests should a Samoyed breeder have done?
The AKC recommends a hip evaluation, a cardiac exam, an eye exam and DNA tests for retinal dysplasia with oculoskeletal dysplasia and for X-linked progressive retinal atrophy. Ask to see the results for both parents. Regular vet checkups and parasite control, which the AKC also recommends, and a close eye on weight under that thick coat cover the rest.
