Samoyed grooming
Samoyed grooming in Gloucester, MA
A Samoyed's coat was made for sledding in Siberian cold, and the AKC calls it impervious to cold. On Cape Ann the same coat meets road salt, spring mud and humid Julys, and a white dog shows every bit of it. Here is what the coat needs from a groomer, why the drying takes so long, and what each visit costs.
The coat
Harsh white guard hair stands straight out from a soft wool undercoat, and the wool is what mats
The AKC breed standard describes the Samoyed as a double-coated dog: an undercoat of soft, short, thick, close wool, with longer, harsh hair growing through it to form an outer coat that stands straight out from the body, free from curl. A ruff frames the neck and shoulders, fuller on males, and females usually carry a shorter, softer coat. The AKC's grooming notes add that Samoyeds shed quite a bit all the time and more in a shedding season that comes once or twice a year.
That stand-off outer coat looks tidy long after the wool beneath it has started to pack. Loose undercoat stays trapped under the guard hair, and it knots first where the coat rubs or stays damp: behind the ears, in the ruff under the collar, in the armpits, along the trousers on the back legs and at the base of the tail. On the AKC's figures males weigh 45 to 65 pounds and females 35 to 50, so there is a great deal of wool to work through on every visit.
- Outer coat: harsh, straight and standing off the body
- Undercoat: short, thick wool that sheds all year
- A heavy shed once or twice a year, per the AKC
- Knots start behind the ears, in the ruff and on the trousers
No shave-down
A Samoyed keeps its coat: the groom is a bath and brush-out, with whitening when the white has dulled
Shaving is the wrong answer for this coat. Dr. Jerry Klein, the AKC's chief veterinary officer, explains that a dog's coat acts as an insulator, and that removing it makes a dog susceptible to heat stroke and takes away its protection from sunburn. The same article notes that a shaved undercoat grows back faster and can crowd out the slower guard hairs, so a Samoyed's coat may return patchy and changed. Even on a sticky August afternoon in Gloucester, the coat is doing a job.
So the usual Samoyed visit is the bath, priced by weight, with a blow-dry and brush-out included. The full service adds a breed-specific or custom haircut, and on a Samoyed that means a tidy rather than a reshape: neat feet, a clean sanitary area and ragged edges evened, with the ruff and the plume left whole. Whitening, an $8 add-on, is a brightening shampoo for white and light coats, and it suits a Samoyed that has faded to cream after a winter of salt and slush.
- Bath: wash, blow-dry and brush-out, priced by weight
- Full service: the bath plus a light tidy of feet and edges
- Whitening: $8, for a coat that has lost its white
- Shaving: not the fix for a double coat, per the AKC
Shed and dryer
Book Shed Release as the wool starts to lift, and expect drying to take most of the visit
Once or twice a year the undercoat lets go in earnest. Book the bath with Shed Release, a $10 de-shedding treatment and brush-out, the week you see tufts of wool lifting through the guard hair on the hips and trousers. Booked early, it takes the shed out in one appointment. Booked late, the loose wool has already packed into the ruff and behind the ears, and working it out is dematting at $15 per 20 minutes on top of the bath.
Then the dryer. The AKC's drying guide notes that double-coated and long coats take longer to dry, that dog dryers work by airflow rather than heat, and that heat on the skin can burn. Its double-coat guide puts the Samoyed among the arctic coats, thick, oily and woolly, and quotes a master groomer who says these coats should not be dried all the way to the skin. Every bath includes a blow-dry; which dryer is used, and how the coat is finished, the groomer confirms with you at check-in.

Price by size
$65 or $75 for the bath and $85 or $110 for full service, set by your Samoyed's weight
Weight sets the band, not the breed. On the AKC's figures most female Samoyeds weigh 35 to 50 pounds, which is the $65 bath and the $85 full service, and most males weigh 45 to 65, which puts many of them at $75 and $110. A Samoyed over 90 pounds would be $85 for a bath and $120 for full service. The groomer confirms the band and the final price at check-in, after a look at the coat.
The add-ons a Samoyed uses most are Shed Release at $10, whitening at $8 and nail clipping at $16; the AKC suggests trimming the nails every three to four weeks or as needed. A sanitary trim is $10. Unlimited daycare members take 15 percent off every groom, and overnight guests on the Dogtown Deluxe bundle take 15 percent, or 10 percent on the Classic. On a daycare day, the Pup Van brings dogs from Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way.

At home
Brush a little every day, rinse off salt and mud, and never brush the coat while it is wet
The AKC's advice for a Samoyed is daily brushing, which removes dirt and loose hair, with a slicker brush or metal comb for any mats or tangles. Five minutes a day does more than an hour on Sunday. Work in sections from the skin outward, comb behind the ears and through the trousers, and stop when the comb glides. Our how-to on de-shedding a double-coated dog at home covers a full session for shedding weeks.
Cape Ann tests a white coat. Spring trails on Dogtown Common turn to mud, winter sidewalks in Gloucester are salted, and both end up in the trousers and feet. Rinse the legs and belly in fresh water the same day, then press the water out with a towel; the AKC warns that rubbing vigorously can tangle and mat a coat. Let the coat dry before you brush. The daily brush through the ruff is also the easiest moment to find a tick after a woods walk.
- A slicker brush and a metal comb, every day
- Behind the ears and the trousers first
- A fresh-water rinse after salt or mud
- Brush only once the coat is dry
