Maltipoo care on Cape Ann

The AKC describes the Maltese as a playful, gentle toy dog under seven pounds and the poodle as very people-oriented and wickedly smart. A maltipoo can take after either side, in size as much as in temperament. This guide covers the parts of maltipoo life that our grooming page leaves out: time alone, the playgroup, the knees and a Cape Ann year.

Two parents

With no AKC standard, a maltipoo is read from its Maltese and poodle parents

The AKC recognizes the Maltese and the poodle but not the cross, so there is no official size, coat or temperament to quote. What the AKC does publish is each parent. The Maltese stands 7 to 9 inches, weighs under 7 pounds and is described as playful, charming and gentle, an alert watchdog that can be stubborn but responds well to rewards-based training. The toy poodle stands no more than 10 inches and weighs 4 to 6 pounds; the miniature stands 10 to 15 inches and weighs 10 to 15 pounds.

Put together, a maltipoo might weigh five pounds or fifteen, and that range matters more than the name. A dog at the small end needs the gentlest playmates and care on stairs and furniture, while a dog with a miniature poodle parent may want far more activity. The AKC says poodles of any size need good exercise every day, yet it says the Maltese needs only occasional exercise. Ask the breeder about both parents, and let your dog show you which side it favors.

  • Maltese parent: under 7 pounds, playful, alert, sometimes stubborn
  • Toy poodle parent: 4 to 6 pounds and no taller than 10 inches
  • Miniature poodle parent: 10 to 15 pounds and very active
  • Ask the breeder for both parents' sizes and temperaments

Time alone

Separation worries: teach a people dog to be alone before the first long workday

Both parents were kept as companions, and the AKC calls the poodle very people-oriented, so many maltipoos follow their people from room to room. Some find being left alone hard. VCA's veterinarians describe dogs that show distress when left: vocalizing, pacing, damaging objects or exit points, salivating and eliminating indoors. If those signs appear suddenly, VCA's advice is to book a vet exam, and if distress persists, to work with a veterinary behaviorist on the dog's emotional needs.

For a dog that is mildly unsettled, VCA's method is short departures that end before the dog gets upset, lengthened gradually and at random, and it is firm that you never punish a mess you come home to. Daycare does not treat separation anxiety, but VCA lists a daycare facility among the ways to keep a dog safe while you work on it. A half day at Dogtown is $33 and a full day $42, and our private training sessions start from $94 if you want a plan.

  1. 01

Start with an absence of a minute or two, before your dog shows any distress

  2. 02

Come back calmly and keep the greeting short

  3. 03

Lengthen the absences gradually, and vary them at random

  4. 04

Drop back a step if your dog starts to vocalize, pace or scratch at the door

  5. 05

Never punish damage or a mess you find when you return

  6. 06

Call your vet if the signs are new, sudden or getting worse

Small-dog groups

Small-dog playgroups: size and temperament are matched at the free evaluation

A maltipoo's place at daycare is decided by watching the dog, not by reading the breed name. The free evaluation runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours with other dogs. Our playgroups are 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, so a five-pound maltipoo plays with the smallest, gentlest dogs, while a sturdy fifteen-pounder may join a livelier small group.

Some maltipoos love a group from the first hour; others would rather sit near a handler and watch. Either answer is useful. If a group is not the right fit, we will say so and suggest something that is, such as a 20-minute at-home walk at $25 where we cover your address. Bring Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city dog license to the evaluation, and use FIRST15 for 15 percent off the first daycare visit.

  • Placed by size and temperament, never by breed name alone
  • Half days at $33 for a dog that tires early
  • Watching from a quiet spot is a fair answer too
  • Vaccine records and the city license at the evaluation

Knees and hips

Knees and hips: the joint problems both parent breeds can pass along

VCA's veterinarians explain that a luxating patella is a kneecap that slips out of place, and they name the Maltese and the poodle among the toy and small breeds genetically predisposed to it. Owners usually notice a skip in the step, or a few strides on three legs before the dog carries on as if nothing happened. Your vet diagnoses it by feeling the knee and grades it from I, where the kneecap slips out only when pushed and returns at once, to IV, where it stays out and cannot be put back by hand.

The AKC adds that Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, a hip problem, and luxating patellas are both more likely in toy and miniature poodles than in standards, and it lists a patella evaluation among the recommended tests for both parent breeds. Ask the breeder for the parents' results. At home, a ramp or steps up to the sofa spare small knees. Before daycare, tell us what your vet has found, so play can stay calm and low to the ground.

A Cape Ann year

A Cape Ann year with a maltipoo: mud, tick months and the off-season beach

Our maltipoo grooming page covers the coat and the cuts; this is how the calendar changes the work. March and April are mud season, and a low dog's legs and belly collect most of it, so a $55 bath between haircuts for a dog up to 25 pounds is often the useful visit. From April to November, part the curly coat at the ears, armpits and belly after a walk at Ravenswood Park or Dogtown Common, because a small tick is easy to miss in it.

The beaches open to dogs in the cold months. At the time of writing, Gloucester allows dogs off leash on Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, and Rockport bans dogs from its public beaches from June 1 to September 15. A small dog on a wide beach is easy to lose sight of, so a long line, or the fenced small-dog area at the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park, is the safer run.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is there an AKC breed standard for the maltipoo?
No. The AKC registers the Maltese and the poodle but not the cross, so there is no official size, coat or temperament. The parent breed pages are the best guide: a Maltese under 7 pounds, a toy poodle of 4 to 6 pounds or a miniature of 10 to 15. Your maltipoo can land anywhere in that range.
Will daycare fix my maltipoo's separation anxiety?
Daycare does not treat separation anxiety, but it can mean fewer hours alone while you work on it. VCA recommends short, gradual absences, never punishing what you find when you return, and a vet exam if the signs start suddenly. A half day at Dogtown is $33 after the free weekday evaluation, and private training sessions start from $94.
Which playgroup would my maltipoo join?
We place your maltipoo at the free evaluation, held on weekdays from 6:30 to 9:30 AM. Our groups of 7 to 10 dogs are matched by size and temperament, so a tiny maltipoo plays with the smallest, gentlest dogs. If your dog would rather be with people than in a group, we will tell you and suggest another option, such as an at-home walk.
My maltipoo skips on a back leg. Should I worry?
Show your vet. VCA describes a skip in the step, or a few strides on three legs, as the typical sign of a luxating patella, a kneecap that slips out of place, and names the Maltese and the poodle among predisposed breeds. Your vet confirms it by feeling the knee. Tell us the result so we can plan your dog's play.
How often does a maltipoo need grooming?
Most need a full service every four to six weeks, the rhythm the AKC gives for a poodle in a pet trim. At Dogtown that is $75 for a dog up to 25 pounds, with a $10 face trim in between if hair grows over the eyes. Grooming needs no evaluation, and our maltipoo grooming page explains the cuts and tear stains.
