Cockapoos on Cape Ann: the small doodle with a big coat

The cockapoo is the doodle that fits under a cafe table, wearing a coat that behaves like a full-size doodle's. Most of the ones we see are cocker-eared, soft-coated and quick to mat behind the ears. This page covers the groom, the group, the beach months and what our team keeps an eye on.

The coat

A cocker's ears and a poodle's coat: the groom every six to eight weeks

No two cockapoo coats are alike. Some are wavy and forgiving, some are tight poodle curl, and most sit between. What they share is hair that keeps growing and does not shed out, so whatever comes loose stays in the coat and felts. The spots that mat first are the ones you touch least: behind the ears, under the collar, the armpits and the inside of the back legs. A full groom every six to eight weeks keeps the coat at a length you can manage at home.

Between grooms, two things matter. A face trim at $10 keeps hair out of the eyes and the beard short enough to dry after a drink. And a line brush to the skin, twice a week, not a pass over the top. Owners who brush the surface and skip the ear flaps tend to arrive with a felted ear that has to be clipped short. Dematting is $15 per 20 minutes, and past a point the kind answer is a shorter cut and a fresh start.

Prices follow weight. A cockapoo under 25 lb sits in the small band; a big one from an English cocker line can tip into medium.

The playgroup

Small groups, quick feet: where a cockapoo lands at the evaluation

Most cockapoos go into a group of 7 to 10 dogs of similar weight, roughly 12 to 25 lb, with a few light-framed medium dogs. They play with their feet and their voice: a chase, a play bow, a burst of barking, then a lap of the yard. Our handlers watch for the cockapoo who joins a bigger dog's wrestling game and gets rolled. That dog spends a few weeks in a quieter circle and comes back when the confidence is there.

The cocker half brings drive. A cockapoo will follow a scent along the fence line, forget the group entirely, then rejoin as if nothing happened. That is spaniel behavior and we leave it alone. A full day is $42 and a half day $33; our small dog daycare page explains how the light groups are built. A cockapoo who needs a job does well on an Academy day at $89, where the sniff room and the puzzle rotation put the nose to work.

  • A circle of 7 to 10 dogs of similar weight, set at the free evaluation
  • Chase and voice play, not wrestling; a rolled dog moves to a quieter group
  • Fence-line sniffing is the spaniel half, not a problem
  • An Academy day at $89 when the nose needs work

This coast

Beach days on the legal dates, then a dry-out before the mats start

A cockapoo will swim in October at Good Harbor on the even-numbered days and at Wingaersheek on the odd ones. Both open to dogs from October 1 at the time of writing, and Good Harbor closes to dogs on April 1 for the plovers; check the city's beach page before you go. The swim is not the problem. The two hours after are, when a wet curly coat with sand in it dries into felt behind each ear.

Winter brings the salt. Gloucester sidewalks and our Eastern Ave lot are treated after every storm, and a cockapoo's furnishings pick it up between the toes and along the belly. Rinse the feet in the sink when you get home. From April to November the same coat is a tick blanket; run your fingers to the skin at the ears, the collar line and the armpits after Dogtown Common or Ravenswood.

  1. 01

Rinse the salt water out with fresh water before the coat dries

  2. 02

Towel firmly, then comb the ears, armpits and belly while still damp

  3. 03

Dry the ear flaps and the beard; a damp beard sours by evening

  4. 04

Do a tick check to the skin from April to November

  5. 05

Book the next groom before the coat gets ahead of you

Health notes

Ears and eyes: what our team watches for on a cockapoo

Cocker ears hang low and hold moisture, and a cockapoo who swims gets ear trouble more easily than a prick-eared dog. Our handlers and groomers notice head shaking, a sour smell or a dog that flinches when the ear is touched, and we tell you the same day. The fix belongs to your vet, not to us; ask about a routine for after swimming. The AKC's expert advice pages explain why drop-eared breeds need extra attention.

The eyes tear, and the hair beneath them stains and crusts. A face trim every three to four weeks plus a wipe at home keeps it clean. We also watch a cockapoo's weight. They are food-driven and easy to over-treat, and a few extra pounds on a small frame shows in the joints later. Ask your vet what a healthy weight looks like on your dog.

  • Head shaking or a sour ear after a swim: we tell you the same day
  • Tear staining: a face trim every three to four weeks and a daily wipe
  • Weight creep, which a full coat hides until the groom

Dogtown for cockapoos

Groom during the daycare day, and let the Pup Van do the driving

The cockapoo pattern that works: two or three daycare days a week, a full groom every six to eight weeks booked into one of those days, and a face trim at the halfway point. Grooming needs no evaluation; daycare, the Academy and walks need the free one, on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30. The Pup Van collects and returns for $10 each way in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

For a household that only needs a midday break, a 20-minute walk at $25 suits a cockapoo who was at daycare the day before. On the overnight side, a suite is $78 a night, the dog joins its usual playgroup by day, and a bath before pick-up sends it home clean rather than three days into a beach-season coat.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How often should a cockapoo be groomed?
Every six to eight weeks for a full service groom, with a $10 face trim about halfway between. A cockapoo kept in a longer coat needs the shorter end of that range plus twice-weekly brushing to the skin at home. In beach season, sooner: salt and sand shorten the interval, and a felted ear cannot be brushed out.
Is a cockapoo small enough for the small-dog playgroups?
Usually. Most cockapoos weigh 12 to 25 lb and are placed with dogs of a similar size and play style at the free evaluation. A larger cockapoo from an English cocker line may go into a light-medium group instead. The evaluation decides the circle, not the breed label on the intake form.
Does a cockapoo shed?
Very little, which is exactly why the coat mats. Loose hair stays caught in the curl instead of falling on the floor, and it felts wherever there is friction: the collar, the ears, the armpits. Low shedding means more brushing, not less. Shed Release is not the treatment here; a full groom and a home brush are.
Can my cockapoo be groomed while at daycare?
Yes. Book the groom onto a daycare day and our groomers take the dog from its playgroup, finish the groom, and return it to the group or hold it quietly until pick-up. Grooming needs no evaluation, so a new cockapoo can start with a groom and do the daycare evaluation later.
