English Springer Spaniel care on Cape Ann
Springers were bred to find birds in high grass and bramble and spring them into the air, and the AKC describes a lively, intelligent dog that is an active and forward explorer of its world. Males weigh about 50 pounds and females about 40. This guide covers the energy, the brush and what both do to the ears and feet.
Field energy
Field energy: a springer needs miles and a job, every day
The AKC says daily exercise keeps a springer healthy and happy, in the form of long walks, hikes and play sessions, and that the breed enjoys obedience, tracking, agility and rally. It also says the springer wants to be with its family and that undesirable behaviors can result if it is regularly left alone for long periods. A springer home alone on a workday is a dog with a full tank and nothing to do.
A full day of daycare at $42 in a playgroup of 7 to 10 active dogs matched by size and temperament covers the miles. Dogtown Academy, $89 a full day, adds a training session with our trainer, scent games and the sensory garden, which put a bird dog's nose to work. On the days at home, a 60-minute at-home walk at $55 is the right length for this breed; ask us whether we cover your address. Each of these starts with the free evaluation, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM.
- Long daily walks or hikes, per the AKC
- Full daycare days at $42 for a dog with a full tank
- Academy days at $89 for scent work and a trainer
- 60-minute at-home walks at $55 on the days in between
Burrs and ticks
Burrs and ticks: what a springer brings home from the brush
A dog bred to push into bramble will find every burr on a Cape Ann trail. Coolidge Reservation in Manchester-by-the-Sea keeps dogs off Gray (Magnolia) Beach and the Ocean Lawn, and Halibut Point State Park in Rockport requires a leash, so a springer's best brush runs are on dog-friendly ground such as Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester, where the Trustees welcome dogs, and Dogtown Common. Burrs left in the ear and leg feathering soon wrap themselves in hair.
Ticks use the same cover, and tick season here runs April to November. VCA explains that the deer tick, also called the black-legged tick, is the usual carrier of Lyme disease, and that a tick seems to need around 12 to 24 hours of feeding before it passes the infection on. The CDC puts it simply: reducing exposure to ticks is the best defense. Check your springer before you drive home, and ask your vet about preventives and the Lyme vaccine.
- 01
Before you leave the trail, pull loose burrs from the ear fringes and leg feathering
- 02
Run your hands over the head, ears and legs before the dog gets in the car
- 03
At home, part the feathering on the ears, chest, armpits and groin
- 04
Spread the toes and check between the pads for burrs and ticks
- 05
Remove ticks promptly and note the date for your vet
- 06
Book a groom when burrs no longer comb out at home
Ear and feet trims
Ear and feet trims: the parts of the coat that do the most work
The AKC suggests regular neatening of a springer's feet, the area around the head and neck, and under the tail, along with weekly brushing with a slicker brush or metal comb. Trimmed ear fringes and tidy feet carry fewer burrs, less sand and less mud into the house, and they make the tick check faster. Our springer spaniel grooming page explains the field and show coats and the full price list.
In short: a springer of 26 to 50 pounds is $85 for full service, which neatens the feet, head, ears and tail, or $65 for a bath; over 50 pounds it is $110 and $75. Between full grooms, the $10 face trim tidies the hair around the eyes, muzzle and ears, and nail clipping is $16. The AKC also advises checking the ears regularly for signs of infection, so dry them after every swim and ask your vet about a cleaning routine.
- Full service neatens the feet, ears, head and tail: $85 or $110 by weight
- The face trim at $10 between full grooms
- Nails at $16; the AKC warns long nails hurt
- Ears dried after every swim and checked often
Health notes
Health notes: hips, elbows, eyes and those long ears
The AKC lists elbow and hip dysplasia and eye conditions, including progressive retinal atrophy, among the health issues seen in the breed, and recommends hip, elbow and eye evaluations plus a DNA test for one form of retinal atrophy. Ask the breeder for the results. A springer that runs hard all day and then rises stiffly, or stops jumping into the car, is showing you something for your vet.
VCA notes that dogs with large, floppy or hairy ears are more prone to ear infections, and lists head shaking, scratching, redness, odor and discharge as the signs. Only a vet can diagnose an ear, so a springer that shakes its head after a swim needs an appointment rather than a home remedy. Teeth brushing, which the AKC recommends often, is a $10 add-on at any groom.
The beach months
The beach months: a swimmer's calendar on Cape Ann
At the time of writing, Gloucester's beaches are closed to dogs in summer and open in the off-season: Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30. Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea admits licensed, vaccinated dogs from October 15 to April 14, two per person, under the town's Singing Beach rules. Rinse the salt out of a swimming springer and dry the ears and feathering the same day.
The AKC says the owner should be in control at all times, because the springer is an active and forward explorer. On an off-leash beach day that means a recall you trust near gulls and other dogs, or a long line until you have one. On daycare days, the Pup Van collects in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way.
