Cocker Spaniel care on Cape Ann
The AKC calls the cocker spaniel the smallest member of the sporting family: a bird dog bred to flush game from dense cover, and America's most popular breed in the 1950s. This guide covers the whole dog at daycare and on the coast, and our cocker spaniel grooming page covers the cut and the price list.
Temperament
A gentle daycare temperament: merry, eager to please and soft on correction
The AKC describes the cocker as a people-pleasing breed that wants to be good, and as generally sensitive to correction and to a disapproving tone; harsh correction, it says, is neither warranted nor productive. In a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, that translates into a dog that plays happily with gentle partners and can be overwhelmed by a rough one. Males weigh 25 to 30 pounds and females 20 to 25, so most cockers sit with the small and light-medium dogs.
The AKC also notes that the cocker does not need a lot of exercise just to burn off energy; it enjoys retrieving a toy, walking with its people and playing with another dog. A half day at $33 suits many adults and a full day at $42 suits a young cocker. Food, play and praise all motivate the breed, which makes a half-day Academy session at $69 a pleasant way to build manners. The free evaluation runs weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM.
- Gentle playmates of similar size; rough play overwhelms many cockers
- Calm, positive handling; the AKC says harsh correction does not help
- Half days for many adults, full days for young dogs
- Food, play and praise all work as rewards
Ear care
Ear care after the pool, the bath and the rain, not only after the beach
VCA names cocker spaniels among the breeds with large, floppy or hairy ears that are more prone to ear infections, and lists head shaking, scratching, redness, a bad odor and a dark or yellowish discharge as the usual signs. The AKC tells owners to learn from their vet how to clean and dry a cocker's ear canals, especially after a bath. On Cape Ann the obvious trigger is a swim at Wingaersheek, but a summer pool day in the Dogtown yard or a long walk in a nor'easter drizzle wets the ears too.
Make the ear routine as automatic as clipping on the leash. Dry each ear flap and the opening with a soft towel whenever the dog has been in water, and follow the cleaning routine your vet shows you rather than inventing one. Only your vet can tell whether an ear is infected and which treatment fits, and VCA warns that some ear products can harm a damaged eardrum. A cocker that shakes its head at pick-up deserves a look that evening.
- 01
Towel the ear flap and the opening dry after every swim, bath or pool day
- 02
Lift each flap once a week and look: pale and clean is normal
- 03
Use only the cleaner and method your vet has shown you
- 04
Note any head shaking, scratching or smell, and when it started
- 05
Book a vet visit for a red, sore or smelly ear before the next groom
Coat cadence
Coat cadence: keep the grooming cycle steady through every season
The AKC is clear that a cocker coat needs regular, thorough grooming, and our cocker spaniel grooming page explains the breed pattern, the pet trim and the prices, $75 up to 25 pounds and $85 from 26 to 50. This guide's job is the calendar. In winter, the skirt and leg feathering collect snowballs and road salt; in late summer, Dogtown Common and Ravenswood Park fill it with burrs; and from April to November it hides ticks.
The simplest way to stay on schedule is to book the next groom before you leave, which takes $5 off it. Between visits, a metal comb that reaches the skin through the ears, armpits and skirt every few days does more than a long session once a month. If the coat has felted anyway, dematting is $15 per 20 minutes, and a shorter trim for that visit is often the kinder choice.
- Winter: snowballs and salt in the feathering, rinsed and dried the same day
- Late summer: burrs picked out before they knot
- April to November: a tick check through the ears and legs
- Book the next groom at pick-up and save $5
Weight and eyes
Weight and the eyes: what groomers and vets notice on cockers
The AKC notes that groomers and veterinarians often see overweight cockers, and advises keeping the dog at a proper weight without overfeeding. A full coat hides a few extra pounds well, so feel for the ribs under the feathering every couple of weeks. VCA links excess weight to osteoarthritis, diabetes and heart disease, and suggests keeping treats under 10 percent of daily calories. A supervised treadmill session, a $10 add-on on a daycare day, gives steady, low-impact exercise.
The AKC lists hip dysplasia and eye disease among the breed's possible health issues and recommends hip and eye evaluations for breeding dogs, so ask the breeder for results. It also warns that mats can lead to skin problems underneath, one more reason the grooming cycle matters. A squinting eye, a red patch under the coat or an ear that smells are all for your vet to look at.
The cocker's week
The cocker's week at Dogtown: play, a groom on the same day, and the van
Grooming needs no evaluation, so a cocker can start with a groom and join daycare later. Once the free evaluation is done, a groom can be added to a daycare day: drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM on a weekday and collect a dry, combed dog between 4 and 6:30 PM. Overnight guests on the Dogtown Classic bundle take 10 percent off grooming, and Deluxe guests 15 percent.
The Pup Van collects in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, which spares a freshly groomed cocker a muddy walk to the car. Use the code FIRST15 for 15 percent off a cocker's first daycare visit. For the off-season beach, the rules at the time of writing are Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31 and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30.
