Chow Chow care on Cape Ann

The AKC describes the chow as an all-purpose dog of ancient China: dignified, serious-minded and aloof, with a lion's-mane ruff, a blue-black tongue and a stiff-legged gait. VCA's breed guide adds that it is reserved toward, and even wary of, strangers. This guide covers what that means for daycare, walks and a Cape Ann summer; our Chow Chow grooming page covers the coat.

Aloof by design

Aloofness with strangers is part of the breed, not a fault to fix

The AKC calls the chow dignified, bright and serious-minded, and VCA describes a devoted, protective family dog that is reserved toward strangers and not friendly toward strange dogs. That reserve is the temperament the breed was kept for, and a well-raised chow can still be calm and polite with visitors. The realistic goal is a relaxed dog that tolerates new people, not one that greets everyone at the door.

The AKC recommends early socialization and puppy classes, says patience and positive, consistent reinforcement are the keys to training, and warns that harsh methods should be avoided so the chow learns to trust. Let visitors ignore your chow and let it approach in its own time, reward calm choices, and give it a quiet room to retreat to. A chow that growls at guests or lunges on the leash needs a trainer's plan, and Dogtown's force-free private sessions start from $94.

  • Visitors ignore the dog, and the chow chooses when to approach
  • Rewards for calm, never punishment for a warning growl
  • A quiet room to retreat to when the house is busy
  • Early, gentle socialization, as the AKC recommends

Daycare fit

Daycare is an open question for a chow, and the evaluation answers it

VCA's note that chows are not friendly toward strange dogs, and the AKC's advice of moderate play with minimal rough play or high-impact exercise, both bear on a playgroup. Some chows settle into a calm group and some never will, and we do not decide either way from the breed. The free evaluation, held on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, is a temperament test and a few supervised hours with dogs, and it shows what your chow actually wants.

If a group suits your chow, it joins calm dogs matched by size and temperament in a group of 7 to 10, and a half day at $33 keeps the play moderate. If it does not, there are good alternatives. Our at-home walks are solo walks with Dogtown staff, $25 for 20 minutes, $35 for 30 or $55 for 60 where we cover your address, with a photo and a note after every walk. A groom needs no evaluation at all.

  • Decided at the evaluation, not by the breed name
  • A half day keeps play moderate
  • Calm, size-matched playmates if a group suits
  • Solo at-home walks or grooming if it does not

Heat limits

Heat limits: walk a chow at the cool ends of the day

The AKC says the chow does not tolerate high heat or humidity well and advises avoiding exercise in the hot part of the day, suggesting instead a moderate-paced walk four or more times a day. VCA's guide says the breed enjoys cold weather and becomes overheated easily, and that it is not physically suited to overly vigorous exercise. A humid Cape Ann July, with the sun on the granite and the pavement, is the hardest month for a dog in that coat.

Plan the summer around the heat. Walk early and late on shaded grass, keep a cool room or floor for the afternoon, and remember that Gloucester's beaches are off limits to dogs through the summer in any case. VCA lists elevated breathing, abnormal gum color and disorientation among the signs of heat stroke and calls it an immediate medical emergency; cool the dog with cool, not cold, water, then call your vet or Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn.

Dense coat

A dense coat on the North Shore: skin checks, ticks and drying

The AKC describes a profuse double coat on both the rough and smooth chow and recommends thorough brushing at least twice a week. It also tells owners to check the skin regularly for irritation or other signs of allergy, even when the diet has not changed, and to deal with fleas or ticks immediately. Our Chow Chow grooming page covers baths, drying and the lion trim question; a bath for a chow up to 50 pounds is $65.

On Cape Ann, tick season runs from April to November, and the ruff around the neck and the heavy coat on the thighs are where a tick can stay hidden. Part the coat to the skin there after any walk through long grass at Ravenswood Park or on Dogtown Common. After rain or a foggy morning, towel the coat and let it dry right through before your chow settles on its bed.

  • Brush at least twice a week, as the AKC advises
  • Look at the skin for redness or itch as you brush
  • Part the ruff and thighs to the skin for ticks
  • Towel and dry the coat after rain or fog

Eyes and joints

Eyelids, hips and elbows: the chow's health list

The AKC lists eyelid entropion, hip and elbow dysplasia, allergies and thyroid function among the breed's health issues, and recommends patella, hip, elbow, eye and thyroid evaluations for breeding dogs. VCA explains that entropion is an eyelid that rolls inward, names the chow among the predisposed breeds and says it is usually diagnosed in puppies under one year old. Most affected dogs squint, hold the eye shut and tear heavily, and the treatment is surgical correction.

The deep-set almond eyes the AKC describes are part of the chow's look, so keep watching them. A puppy that squints, rubs its face or has a wet streak under the eye needs a vet visit, not a groom. VCA also recommends a large-breed growth food for chow puppies and says it may lower the incidence or severity of hip dysplasia in adults. The AKC gives the breed a life expectancy of 8 to 12 years.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Are Chow Chows good with strangers?
Not in an outgoing way. The AKC calls the breed aloof, and VCA describes a dog reserved toward, and even wary of, strangers. With early socialization and patient, positive training, a chow can be calm and polite with visitors. Let guests ignore it, let the dog approach in its own time, and never punish a warning growl.
Can a Chow Chow go to daycare?
Some can, and we decide at the free evaluation, on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, not from the breed. VCA notes chows are not friendly toward strange dogs, and the AKC advises minimal rough play. If a group suits your chow, a half day at $33 keeps play moderate; if not, an at-home walk is a good alternative.
When should I walk my chow in summer?
Early in the morning and in the evening. The AKC says chows do not tolerate high heat or humidity well and advises against exercise in the hot part of the day, suggesting four or more moderate walks instead. Choose shade and grass, carry water, and treat confusion or collapse as an emergency.
What is entropion?
It is an eyelid that rolls inward. VCA names the chow among the predisposed breeds and says it is usually diagnosed in puppies under a year old; signs include squinting, holding the eye shut and heavy tearing. Treatment is surgical correction by a vet, so book an appointment rather than waiting for the next groom.
Do you walk chows at home?
Our at-home walks are solo walks led by Dogtown staff who get to know your dog. They are $25 for 20 minutes, $35 for 30 and $55 for 60, with a photo and a note after each walk. Walks need the free evaluation first, and availability depends on your address and the season, so ask us.
