Chihuahua care on Cape Ann
The AKC calls the Chihuahua a tiny dog with a huge personality: a balanced, graceful dog of terrier-like demeanor with a big-dog attitude, and one of the oldest breeds of the Americas. It also notes that the breed is clannish and prefers the company of its own kind. On Cape Ann, the wind off the water and the big dogs on the off-season beaches shape a Chihuahua's days more than anything else.
Cold mornings
Cold mornings: dress a Chihuahua before the door opens and keep the first trip outside short
Get the coat on indoors, before the cold gets in. The AKC says special care must be taken with a Chihuahua in cold weather, and the AVMA's cold-weather guidance adds that short-haired pets feel the cold faster, that a wet sweater or coat can actually make a dog colder, so a dry spare is worth carrying, and that boots protect small feet on frigid, icy ground. A dog under six pounds has very little body to keep warm, and a January drop-off with wind off the harbor is often the coldest part of its day.
Salt is the second winter job. The AVMA advises washing the feet, legs and belly after walks on treated ground, because salt and de-icers can injure paws and be swallowed when a dog licks them clean, and a Chihuahua's belly rides close to the sidewalk. For daycare you only need to bring your dog on a leash with a secure collar or harness, so dress it for the drive and the walk from the car, and keep a dry layer in the car for pick-up.
- 01
Put the sweater or coat on indoors, before the door opens
- 02
Keep the first toilet trip short, then go straight into a warmed car
- 03
Take the shortest dry path from the car to our door
- 04
Pack a dry spare layer in the car for the ride home
- 05
At home, wipe the feet, legs and belly with a warm, damp cloth
- 06
Dry between the toes and check the pads for salt cracks
Small-dog groups
Small-dog groups: a Chihuahua plays with dogs its own size, and the evaluation decides which
Size comes first in every playgroup we build. Our groups of 7 to 10 dogs are matched by size and temperament at the free evaluation, a temperament test and a few supervised hours held weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, so a Chihuahua that joins a group joins small, gentle players. The AKC scores the breed four out of five for energy and playfulness and three with other dogs, and notes that it is clannish, so how your dog takes to a group is something we watch rather than assume.
The AKC also says a Chihuahua loves to run and play, usually gets enough exercise trotting around after its people, and should not be overexerted; a dog that is panting and working hard to keep up should be picked up and carried home. That is one reason to start with a half day at $33 and move to a full day at $42 once you see how your dog handles the length of it. If this is your first visit, the code FIRST15 brings that first daycare day down by 15 percent.
- Groups matched by size first, then temperament
- A half day at $33 to start, a full day at $42 later
- Rest breaks and water through the day
- Placement decided at the evaluation, not by breed
Big dogs
Confidence with big dogs grows from distance and choice, on a harness rather than a collar
Give your Chihuahua room to watch big dogs before it ever has to meet one. A six-pound dog cannot outrun a Labrador, so on the off-season beaches, where Good Harbor allows dogs off leash on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31 at the time of writing, choose a quiet hour and keep enough space to step away from a big dog bounding over. The Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park has a separate small-dog area, which makes a calmer first off-leash outing than an open beach.
Use a harness, not a collar, for these walks. VCA says tracheal collapse often affects Chihuahuas, describes a dry, harsh cough sometimes called a goose honk that can worsen with excitement, at night and in hot or humid weather, and advises a harness rather than a collar, along with weight control. A Chihuahua that lunges and barks at a passing dog on a collar is pressing on exactly the spot VCA wants protected. A honking cough is a reason to see your vet.
- Quiet beach hours and room to step away
- The small-dog area at the Gloucester Dog Park for off-leash play
- A harness, never a collar, for walks
- A honking cough: book your vet
Health
Kneecaps, heart and teeth: what to ask the breeder and your vet about
The AKC calls most Chihuahuas healthy little dogs and lists the issues worth screening for: heart problems such as patent ductus arteriosus and mitral valve disease, eye disease, patellar luxation, or loose kneecaps, and idiopathic epilepsy. Its test list covers the patellas, a cardiac exam and an ophthalmologist's evaluation, so ask a breeder for the parents' results. Any change in how your dog walks, breathes or keeps up on a walk is worth raising with your vet.
Teeth and weight are the daily part. The AKC says good dental care is necessary, including tooth brushing, and that your vet may recommend treats designed for tooth care; teeth brushing at Dogtown is $10. Some Chihuahuas put on weight easily, the AKC adds, so give table scraps sparingly if at all and avoid cooked bones and fatty foods. A bath is $55, nail clipping $16, and our dog grooming page lists every other add-on.
Getting started
Getting a Chihuahua started at Dogtown takes the license, the vaccines and one weekday morning
Every dog needs the same paperwork, however small. Bring Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city dog license to the free evaluation. In Gloucester, at the time of writing, the license is $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact one, each plus a $2 processing fee; it needs a current rabies certificate and is due by April 30. Renewals can be done online, and new licenses go in by mail or the drop box.
Grooming needs no evaluation, so a bath and nail trim can come first and give your Chihuahua a short, quiet first visit to the building. For daycare, add the Pup Van if you live in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea: $10 each way for pick-up and drop-off, which spares a small dog the walk across a cold parking lot. Our small dog daycare page explains how the size-matched groups run through the day.
