Chihuahua grooming

Chihuahua grooming in Gloucester, MA

The Chihuahua comes in two coats, smooth and long, and the AKC says the two varieties are identical in every other way. That makes grooming the one place where they differ. Both share the things that matter most on a dog under six pounds: nails that need regular trims, teeth that need brushing, and a body that loses heat quickly when it is wet.

Two coats

Smooth or long, a Chihuahua is one breed with two coats, and each needs a different groom

The AKC breed standard describes the smooth coat as soft, close and glossy, with a ruff on the neck preferred and the hair thinner on the head and ears; heavier coats with an undercoat are allowed. The long coat is soft, flat or slightly wavy, ideally with an undercoat, and carries fringed ears, a full plume of a tail, feathering on the feet and legs, pants on the hind legs and a large ruff at the neck.

The AKC's grooming advice follows the coat. A smooth Chihuahua needs only occasional brushing and regular baths to look its best. A long-coated one should be brushed at least once a week to keep tangles and mats away, mostly in the ruff, behind the ears and in the pants. Both varieties weigh no more than six pounds under the standard, which puts a Chihuahua in our smallest price band.

  • Smooth coat: soft, close and glossy, with a ruff at the neck
  • Long coat: fringed ears, a plumed tail, a large ruff and pants on the hind legs
  • Both coats: no more than six pounds under the breed standard
  • Long coat: brushed at least weekly; smooth coat: occasionally

The groom

A smooth Chihuahua needs a bath and nails; a long-coated one gets a neaten that keeps its fringes

For a smooth Chihuahua, the $55 bath is the groom: a warm wash, a blow-dry and a brush-out that lifts the loose hair, with nails at $16 added on. There is nothing to cut. For a long-coated dog the bath works too, and the $75 full service adds a light neaten: the hair between the pads trimmed level, stray ends evened on the pants and the feathering, and a sanitary tidy, with the ear fringes, ruff and plume left long.

The breed standard puts it simply: a Chihuahua should be groomed only to create a neat appearance. A short all-over cut is possible as a custom choice in the full service, but on a long coat it removes the fringes for very little saving in upkeep. If your dog is wary of new people, and the AKC rates the breed low for openness to strangers, the $20 handling surcharge buys a slower pace with an extra pair of hands.

Cold after the bath

A wet six-pound dog chills fast, so a Chihuahua should leave dry to the skin and go home in a coat

The AKC says special care must be taken with a Chihuahua in cold weather, and the hour after a bath is when that matters most. A small body has little mass to hold heat, and damp hair near the skin holds the chill. Every Dogtown bath includes a blow-dry, and a Chihuahua should go out the door dry right down to the skin, not just on the surface. Ask the groomer to check the ruff and the pants, which dry last on a long coat.

Cape Ann adds wind. In winter the walk from our door on Eastern Ave to your car can be raw, and a nor'easter can turn a pick-up into a slog. Bring a coat or sweater for the trip home and have the car warm. If a storm closes the roads, call to move the appointment rather than skipping it, since the $10 cancellation fee applies to grooming appointments cancelled without notice.

Price

$55 for a bath, $75 for a long-coat neaten, and $16 for nails

A Chihuahua is priced in the up to 25 pound band: $55 for a bath and $75 for the full service. Nail clipping is $16, teeth brushing $10, a sanitary trim $10 and a face trim $10. The final price is confirmed at check-in once the groomer has looked at the coat. A tangled ruff or pants is worked out at $15 per 20 minutes on top, estimated before any work starts.

For a smooth Chihuahua the rhythm is set by the nails and the dirt: a bath when the coat is dull or the dog has rolled in something, and nails trimmed regularly, as the AKC advises for both varieties. A long-coated dog adds the full service whenever the feet and pants lose their shape. Booking the next appointment at pick-up takes $5 off it, which makes a regular nail-and-bath visit easy to keep.

Nails and teeth

Between grooms, keep the tiny nails short, brush the teeth and check the ears

Small paws and small mouths are where a Chihuahua's grooming really happens. The AKC calls for regular nail trims on both coats and says good dental care, including brushing the teeth, is necessary; your vet may also suggest tooth-care treats. Whether the groomer clips or files your dog's nails is confirmed at check-in. At home, our how-to on cooperative care for nail trims builds the habit one toe at a time.

Check the ears regularly too, removing any excess wax or debris, as the AKC suggests, and see your vet about redness or odor. A long coat needs its weekly brush, behind the ears and through the pants. For exercise between grooms, the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park has a separate small-dog area, and from April to November, tick season, a quick look along the ruff after a walk is worth the minute.

  • Nails: trimmed regularly, $16 at the groom
  • Teeth: brushed at home, plus $10 at the groom
  • Ears: checked regularly, with excess wax wiped away
  • Long coat: a weekly brush behind the ears and through the pants

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Does a smooth-coated Chihuahua need grooming?
Not a haircut, but yes to the basics. The AKC says a smooth coat needs only occasional brushing and regular baths, while both coats need regular nail trims and dental care. At Dogtown that is a $55 bath with nail clipping at $16 and teeth brushing at $10. There is nothing to cut on a smooth coat.
Will my Chihuahua be cold after a bath?
Not if it leaves dry to the skin and goes home in a coat. The AKC says special care must be taken with the breed in cold weather. Every bath includes a blow-dry, and you can ask the groomer to check the ruff and pants. In winter, bring a sweater for the walk to a warm car.
Can my long-haired Chihuahua have a short cut?
Yes, as a custom choice in the $75 full service. Consider keeping the fringes, though: the breed standard asks only for a neat appearance, and a long coat needs just a weekly brush. Tell the groomer at check-in which parts to leave long, such as the ear fringes, ruff and plumed tail.
How much is a Chihuahua nail trim in Gloucester?
Nail clipping is $16 at Dogtown, on its own or added to a $55 bath, and no evaluation is needed. The AKC advises regular trims for both coat varieties. Whether the nails are clipped or filed is confirmed at check-in, so mention it if your dog has strong feelings about either.
