Bichon Frise care on Cape Ann
The AKC describes a sturdy little dog a shade under a foot tall and 12 to 18 pounds, one that gets on well with other dogs and children and assumes there are no strangers, only friends it has not met. Its family tree runs through the Canary Islands, European royal courts and French street performers. Its care comes down to a white coat, a pair of dark eyes and a house-training habit that takes patience.
Coat on the coast
A coat that keeps its shed hair also keeps sand, salt and snowballs
Brush after the beach and after the snow, not only on schedule. The AKC says a Bichon sheds very little because the shed hair is caught in the undercoat, and that this hair must be brushed out to prevent mats. The same coat collects whatever Cape Ann offers: wet sand on Good Harbor's even-numbered dog days from October 1 to March 31, salt spray, mud on the woodland paths and road salt on Gloucester sidewalks. Grit left to dry in the coat makes the next brush-out slower.
Winter feet need their own plan. The AKC's paw-care advice notes that snow quickly turns into balls of ice between the pads, that pulling them out can cost the dog hair, and that a dog may swallow de-icer or road salt in the process; melt them with a towel soaked in warm water instead. For longer-haired dogs it suggests having a professional trim the hair between the pads, so ask the groomer at check-in to keep those tufts short through the winter.
- 01
Rinse sand or salt out of the feet, legs and belly with warm water
- 02
Melt any ice balls with a warm, wet towel rather than pulling them
- 03
Dry to the skin, including between the toes, before the dog lies down
- 04
Brush in layers once the coat is dry, finishing with a metal comb
- 05
Look between the pads for redness or cracks from salt
Tear stains
Tear stains need a daily wipe, and a change in the tearing needs a vet
Most Bichon tear staining is a daily housekeeping job, and some of it is a symptom. VCA defines epiphora as an overflow of tears, a sign rather than a disease, and lists reddish-brown staining under the eyes as a common result. The causes it names run from allergies, conjunctivitis and abnormal eyelashes to rolled-in or rolled-out eyelids, corneal ulcers and glaucoma, along with hair or debris blocking the opening of the tear duct.
So keep the routine simple and the vet in the loop. Wipe the corners of the eyes with a soft, damp cloth each morning, keep the hair there short with the $10 face trim between grooms, and add whitening at $8 when the coat around the eyes has dulled. VCA's advice is not to use any product on the eyes without asking your vet first. Squinting, redness, a change in the discharge or one eye suddenly watering more than the other is a reason to book that visit.
- A soft, damp cloth at the eye corners every morning
- A $10 face trim to keep hair out of the eyes
- No eye products without your vet's agreement
- Squinting, redness or new discharge: book the vet
House training
House training a Bichon takes patience, and a trained dog's accidents call for a vet first
Give house training more time than you expect, and keep it kind. The AKC notes the breed's reputation for being difficult to housebreak, adds that Bichons are very easy to train in every other respect, and says they respond far better to positive rewards than to harsh methods. Short trips outside on a timetable, a reward the moment the job is done and a crate or gated room whenever nobody is watching are the core; our board-and-train page for the breed sets out the schedule in detail.
When a dog that was reliable starts leaving puddles, think bladder before behavior. The AKC lists bladder infections among the Bichon's health issues, and VCA calls a break in house training a red flag that something is wrong in the bladder. VCA's other signs include trying to urinate often, straining, crying while urinating, blood in the urine, dribbling and a strong smell, and it notes that older females, young puppies and overweight dogs are affected more often. Book the vet before you go back to retraining.
- Accidents in a dog that was reliably clean
- Squatting often and producing little
- Straining, whining or blood in the urine
- Dribbling, extra licking or a strong smell
Skin, ears, knees
Itchy skin, hairy ear canals and loose kneecaps complete the Bichon health list
The AKC calls Bichons generally healthy and sets out the rest of their watch list plainly: allergies, including skin reactions and flea allergy; ear infections when the canal is not kept clean and free of hair; patellar luxation, a weakness in the knee joints; genetic cataracts and other eye disease; and early tooth loss or gum infection when dental care slips. Its breeder test list covers the patellas, the hips and an ophthalmologist's exam, so ask to see those results for both parents.
On Cape Ann, flea allergy and tick season overlap. Ticks are active on local trails from April to November, so a white coat gets a hands-on check after every woods walk, and itching, red skin or a sudden habit of chewing the feet is a conversation for your vet about allergies and parasite prevention. At the groom, the antiseptic or fungal shampoo is an $8 add-on, best used when your vet suggests it, and teeth brushing is $10; our dog grooming page lists every other add-on.
At Dogtown
At Dogtown, a Bichon joins the small-dog side after the evaluation, and the groom can ride along
The AKC describes long stretches of calm broken by brief bursts of high activity, and says a Bichon needs daily play sessions as well as walks and does best with its family around rather than through long days alone. It scores the breed five out of five with other dogs. Placement is still decided dog by dog: our playgroups of 7 to 10 are matched by size and temperament at the free evaluation, held weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment.
Daycare is $42 a day or $33 for a half, and new customers take 15 percent off the first visit with FIRST15. A full-service groom at $75, or a $55 bath between haircuts, can be booked onto the same day so your Bichon goes home clean. The Pup Van covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, and for off-leash running the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park has a separate area for small dogs.
