Bichon grooming
Bichon Frise grooming in Gloucester, MA
The AKC calls the Bichon a small, sturdy, white powder puff of a dog, and the coat earns the name: a soft, dense undercoat under a coarser, curlier outer coat that stands off the body when it is bathed and brushed. It looks best on a monthly cycle, and it needs real brushing in between.
The coat
A Bichon's double coat traps its own shed hair, which is why it looks plush and why it mats
The breed standard describes a soft, dense undercoat and a coarser, curlier outer coat that together feel like plush or velvet and spring back when patted. According to the AKC, the Bichon sheds very little because the shed hair is caught in the undercoat, and that hair has to be brushed out to prevent mats. So the coat can look round and fluffy from across the room while loose hair quietly packs down near the skin.
The friction points on a Bichon are the usual ones on a coated small dog: behind the ears, the armpits, the inside of the back legs, under a collar or harness, and the plumed tail where the dog sits on it. Because the outer coat is curly and the undercoat dense, a tangle at the skin can hide under a perfect surface until a comb finds it. White hair also shows tear stains, grass and sand, which is why Bichon owners think about whitening.
- Shed hair stays in the undercoat until it is brushed out
- Tangles hide under a round, fluffy surface
- Check behind the ears, the armpits, the inner thighs and the tail
Powder puff or pet trim
The rounded powder-puff look and a shorter pet trim both fit in our full service; the difference is upkeep
The classic Bichon look is a rounded head and a plush outline standing off the body, which the breed standard calls the powder-puff appearance after bathing and brushing. The AKC describes rounded head hair that sets off the large, dark eyes. That finish depends on a coat brushed out completely, because a mat cannot be fluffed. Our full service includes haircuts that respect the breed standard, so ask for the breed look and bring a photo of the head shape you like.
A shorter pet trim keeps the round face and the tail plume but takes the body down to a length you can brush in a few minutes. It suits a Bichon that walks the beach, plays in wet grass or wears a harness all day, and it is still a custom haircut at the same full-service price. If your Bichon is being shown, ask the front desk before you book, since show preparation is not a listed service on our grooming menu.
- Breed look: rounded head, plush outline, full brush-out every visit
- Pet trim: a shorter body and a round face, easier at home
- Either one: $75 full service, with a photo at check-in
- Show grooming: ask the front desk first
Four weeks
Book a Bichon about every four weeks; the AKC calls for a bath and clipping at least monthly
The AKC is specific: a Bichon needs a bath and a clipping at least once a month, and most pet owners take theirs to a groomer every four to six weeks. Four weeks keeps the round shape crisp and the undercoat from packing down. Six weeks is the outside edge, and it works best for a shorter pet trim that is brushed well at home.
Push past six weeks and the packed undercoat begins to felt at the friction points. De-matting is billed at $15 per 20 minutes and agreed at check-in after the coat assessment, and a coat matted close to the skin may need a shorter trim to start over, which means giving up the round look for a cycle. Booking the next visit at pick-up saves $5 and keeps the four-week rhythm on the calendar.

Price
Full service for a Bichon is $75, and whitening adds $8
The AKC lists the Bichon at 12 to 18 pounds, so it sits in our small band: $75 for full service and $55 for bath only. Both include a warm bath, blow-dry and brush-out; the full service adds the haircut. A bath-only visit with whitening is a good middle-of-the-cycle refresh for a coat that has picked up beach sand or mud. Final prices are confirmed at check-in after the coat assessment.
Add-ons for a white, curly coat are whitening at $8, a $10 face trim to keep the eyes clear between grooms, a $10 sanitary trim and nail clipping at $16. Teeth brushing at $10 is worth adding too: the AKC notes that Bichons may lose teeth early if dental care and regular brushing are not a priority. Overnight guests on the Dogtown Classic or Deluxe bundles take 10 or 15 percent off grooming.
| What you book | Price | For a Bichon |

| De-matting | $15 per 20 minutes | Packed undercoat worked out before the haircut |
At home
At home, brush to the skin and wipe the eyes every day; tear stains are managed, not erased
Brush two or three times a week at the minimum and daily at best, as the AKC suggests, working in layers to the skin with a slicker brush and finishing with a metal comb. Then the face. The AKC's tear-stain guidance singles out dogs in the Bichon family, and it recommends a quick face grooming every day to keep stains at bay. Sudden heavy staining, or discharge that turns yellow or bloody, is a question for your vet.
A white coat meets a lot on Cape Ann: wet sand at Wingaersheek on its odd-numbered dog days from October 1 to April 30, mud on the Dogtown Common trails in spring, and road salt in winter. Rinse and dry after each, and book whitening when the coat has dulled. If your Bichon comes to daycare, the groom can ride along: drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM on a weekday and collect a clean dog in the afternoon window.
- Brush to the skin at least two or three times a week
- Wipe the eye corners daily and keep them dry
- Rinse salt water and sand out the same day
- Book whitening at the next bath when the white has dulled
