Basset Hound care on Cape Ann

The AKC describes a dog no more than about 15 inches tall with remarkably heavy bone and big-dog strength, bred in France and Belgium to track rabbit and deer over rough ground while hunters followed on foot. Built for endurance rather than speed, it carries its weight on a long back and short legs, and that shape decides most of its care on Cape Ann, from the car door to the snowbank.

Back-friendly exercise

Back-friendly exercise means steady daily walks, a lean waistline and no big drops

A long, low dog does best with steady exercise and a body kept lean. The AKC says a Basset needs regular, moderate exercise, usually a daily walk at a moderate pace, both for health and to keep it from becoming overweight. A 2013 study in PLOS ONE named the Basset among the chondrodystrophic breeds prone to intervertebral disc extrusion, found that relatively longer backs and being overweight both raised the risk in the dogs it studied, and concluded that a lean body shape is particularly important.

Day to day, that means walking rather than leaping. Lift a Basset into the car with both hands, or teach it to use a ramp, rather than letting it jump down from the back seat. On the trails, choose the carriage paths at Ravenswood Park over a scramble across the boulders of Dogtown Common, and let the dog set the pace. Weigh it every month and ask your vet for a target weight; the AKC's nutrition notes warn that too many training treats cause obesity.

Know the warning signs, too. VCA describes disc disease as causing back or neck pain, reluctance to move, uncoordinated walking and, in severe cases, paralysis, and notes that some dogs go from walking to total paralysis in under an hour. A Basset that yelps when picked up, moves stiffly, wobbles on its back legs or refuses a step it managed yesterday needs a vet the same day.

  • A daily walk at the dog's own moderate pace
  • Monthly weigh-ins and a target weight from your vet
  • A ramp or a two-handed lift instead of jumps from the car
  • Same-day vet visit for pain, wobbling or sudden reluctance to move

Nose before recall

The nose overrules recall, so choose Cape Ann walks where a leash costs the dog nothing

Plan every walk as a leashed walk and you will rarely be disappointed. The AKC says that in trailing ability only the Bloodhound's nose is more accurate, and that a Basset is mild and agreeable at home but stubborn on the trail. On a Cape Ann beach the tide line is a scent trail running in both directions, and in the woods every animal track leads somewhere more interesting than you. Gloucester's off-season off-leash days are legal for your dog, which is not the same as wise.

The rules still leave plenty of room. At the time of writing Good Harbor allows dogs off leash on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, Rockport asks for a leash or direct voice control, and Halibut Point State Park requires a leash. A 20 or 30 foot long line on a back-clip harness lets a Basset follow its nose across the sand without following it out of earshot; our how-to on recall with a long line covers the method. Indoors, the $7 sniff room at Dogtown gives the nose a job.

Eyes, ears, blood

Glaucoma is the eye emergency to know, and the ears are the weekly chore

Treat a suddenly painful eye as urgent. The AKC lists glaucoma among the Basset's health issues, and its test list for the breed includes a DNA test for the Basset form of primary open angle glaucoma. VCA names the Basset Hound among breeds associated with glaucoma, lists squinting, rubbing, watery discharge, a red or bulging eye and a cloudy or bluish cornea among the signs, and calls acute glaucoma an emergency, because blindness can follow quickly unless the pressure comes down.

The rest of the AKC's list belongs in your file and your vet's. It names hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, luxating patella and two bleeding disorders, thrombopathia and von Willebrand's disease, which are worth raising with your vet before any surgery. The ears need checking often, the AKC adds, because long, droopy ears limit air circulation, and head shaking or scratching may mean a vet visit. Our Basset grooming page covers the ears, lips and dewlap on the grooming table.

  • Squinting, rubbing or flinching near one eye
  • A red, swollen or bulging eye
  • A cloudy or bluish surface to the eye
  • Sudden bumping into furniture: a same-day vet visit

Snow, salt and sand

Cape Ann snow reaches a Basset's belly before it reaches most dogs' knees

Winter care starts underneath. A dog about 15 inches tall carries its chest and belly a few inches off the ground, so slush, road salt and de-icer coat the underside on every sidewalk walk. The AVMA's cold-weather advice is to wash the feet, legs and belly after walks, because salt and de-icers can injure the paws and be swallowed when a dog licks itself clean. A warm, damp towel along the chest and belly, then a dry one, does the job in a minute.

Deep snow is the other limit. A Basset can push through a few inches, but a fresh foot after a nor'easter turns a walk into plowing, so shovel a path in the yard and keep winter outings short and on cleared ground. Summer brings its own rule: at the time of writing Gloucester keeps dogs off Good Harbor from April 1 and off Wingaersheek, Plum Cove and Cressy's from May 1, all until September 30, so warm-weather walks move to early mornings in the shade.

  1. 01

Wipe the feet, chest and belly with a warm, damp towel

  2. 02

Dry the same places, including between the toes

  3. 03

Lift each ear and dry the leather if it dragged through slush

  4. 04

Check the pads for cracks or redness from salt

  5. 05

Brush the coat once it is dry to lift out the grit

At Dogtown

At Dogtown, a Basset's day is matched play at its own pace, with meals planned around it

The AKC notes that Bassets were developed to work in a pack, enjoy canine company and settle for a comfortable sleep after play, and it scores the breed five out of five with other dogs. That is a starting point, not a placement. Our playgroups of 7 to 10 are matched by size and temperament, and the free evaluation, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, shows whether your Basset joins a group that moves at its speed. Daycare is $42 a day or $33 for a half.

Plan breakfast around the day. VCA lists the Basset Hound among breeds predisposed to bloat, a life-threatening emergency in which the stomach fills with gas and can twist, and counts a single daily meal and fast eating among the risk factors. Split the food into two meals and leave a quiet gap between breakfast and drop-off. A bath before pick-up is $65 or $75 by weight and nail clipping $16; our dog grooming page lists the antiseptic shampoo and every other add-on.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How do I protect my Basset Hound's back?
Keep the dog lean, walk it daily at a moderate pace and spare it big jumps out of the car or off the furniture. A 2013 PLOS ONE study named the Basset among chondrodystrophic breeds prone to disc extrusion and linked extra weight to higher risk. See your vet the same day for pain, wobbling or a sudden refusal to move.
Are Basset Hounds prone to bloat?
VCA lists the Basset Hound among predisposed breeds. Signs include restlessness, heavy drooling, retching with nothing coming up and a swollen belly, and VCA calls bloat an immediate, life-threatening emergency. Feed two or more meals a day rather than one, and avoid hard play right after eating. Ask your vet whether anything more suits your dog.
What are the signs of glaucoma in a Basset Hound?
Squinting, rubbing at one eye, watery discharge, redness, a bulging eye, a cloudy or bluish cornea and sudden vision loss, according to VCA, which calls acute glaucoma an emergency. The AKC lists a DNA test for the Basset form of primary open angle glaucoma, so ask a breeder for the parents' results.
Can my Basset Hound go off leash on Gloucester beaches?
The rules allow it on the dog days: at the time of writing, Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31 and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30. The breed's nose usually makes it a poor idea. A long line on a harness gives the freedom without the chase.
Will my Basset fit in a playgroup?
The free evaluation decides. The AKC scores the breed five out of five with other dogs and says Bassets enjoy canine company, but placement depends on your dog, not its breed. We match groups of 7 to 10 by size and temperament and look for one that plays at your Basset's pace, with room to rest.
