One dog or two: should you get a second dog

A second dog can give the first a playmate, or give you two problems where you had one. This page sets the two households side by side: the money, the training load, how daycare and overnight stays work for a pair, and the dogs who are happier on their own.

Two playgroup friends on the turf

The money

Two dogs cost about twice as much, because almost every bill arrives per dog

The AKC's guidance on affording a second dog is blunt: owning two dogs roughly doubles the cost of one, and the savings on shared supplies are more than offset by the extra expenses. Veterinary visits, food, grooming, training and care while you travel all come per dog. Our own prices work the same way: daycare is booked and priced per dog, packs are bought per dog, and grooming is priced per dog by each dog's size.

Licensing doubles too. In Gloucester each dog needs its own license from the City Clerk, at the time of writing $20 for a spayed or neutered dog or $25 for an intact dog, each plus a $2 processing fee and due by April 30; the city has announced higher fees for 2026, so check its licensing page. How the nightly rate works for two dogs sharing an overnight suite is something the front desk confirms when you book, not a published price.

The training load

A second dog doubles the training, and two puppies at once can more than double it

Many breeders recommend that a first dog be one to two years old before a second arrives, the AKC notes, and fully trained and bonded to you. The same article warns that training two young dogs at once is often more than twice as hard for one person, and that adding a dog to calm a fearful one is a poor reason, because dogs can pass their anxieties on to each other. Work on any behavior problem first, then decide.

Littermate syndrome is the informal name for the problems that can follow when two puppies from one litter are raised together. The AKC describes it as a term rather than a diagnosis, lists possible signs such as extreme distress when separated, poor focus when trained together and more interest in each other than in their people, and notes that unrelated puppies of a similar age can develop the same dependency. Its advice: separate crates, individual training first and time apart every day.

  • First dog one to two years old, trained and bonded, as the AKC suggests
  • No second dog as a cure for the first dog's fear
  • Two puppies at once: separate crates, separate training, daily time apart
  • Similar energy levels make the easiest pair

Daycare and stays for two

At Dogtown a pair shares the drop-off, but not always the playgroup

Each dog does its own free evaluation, on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, and is placed in the group that fits its own size and temperament. Two dogs from one home often end up in different playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs, which lets a young dog play hard while an older one keeps a gentler pace. You still drop off together, and each dog gets its own report card in the Dogtown app.

For overnight stays, ask the front desk whether two dogs who sleep together at home can share a suite and how the $78 nightly rate would apply. Bundles are chosen per dog, so a senior can take the Deluxe, $15 a night, for the orthopedic memory-foam bed while a younger housemate skips it. Our page on boarding two dogs covers the shared suite, meals and medication for a pair in more detail.

Who stays single

Stay with one dog if yours guards, frets or dislikes dogs; add a second when the first is steady and you have the hours

One dog is the better household when your dog guards food, toys or space from other dogs, struggles at the evaluation or in playgroups, is a senior who would rather not be climbed on, or is your first dog and still a work in progress. It is also the better choice when time is already tight. The AKC notes that for many people with several dogs, time is a bigger challenge than money, because each dog still needs individual attention.

Two dogs suit the home where the first dog is grown, trained and plainly enjoys dog company, where someone has the hours for separate walks and training sessions, and where the budget covers twice the bills without strain. Match energy levels: the AKC says dogs with similar energy make the best companions. A pair may also need fewer daycare days each than a single dog, although every dog still needs its own exercise and attention.

  • One dog: a guarder, a dog-selective dog, a senior or an unfinished first dog
  • One dog: a week with no spare hours for a second dog's training
  • Two dogs: a first dog who is grown, trained and social
  • Two dogs: the time and budget for twice the care

Cape Ann with two

Cape Ann rules count dogs per person, so plan outings for a pair before the second dog arrives

Local rules are written with leash hands in mind. Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea allows two dogs per person in its dog season, October 15 to April 14 by the town's beach rules, and Crane Beach in Ipswich allows two dogs per person, each on its own leash outside the marked No Leash Zone, from October 1 to March 31. The Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park caps entry at three dogs per adult and keeps separate small-dog and large-dog areas.

Closer to home, the logistics are simpler. The Pup Van takes both dogs to Dogtown from Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way, and the front desk will tell you how a pair from one address is charged. Both dogs need their own license and tags before any dog season opens, and a pair that walks calmly on two leashes in your own street is ready for Singing Beach when its season begins on October 15.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is there a discount for a second dog at Dogtown?
Our published prices do not include a sibling discount. Each dog is booked and priced on its own, $42 a full day or $33 a half day, and packs are bought per dog. How the $78 nightly rate applies to two dogs sharing one overnight suite is confirmed by the front desk when you book, so ask then.
Should I get two puppies at the same time?
The AKC's littermate guidance points to the risks. Two young dogs raised together can grow so attached that each struggles alone, and training two at once is far more work for one person. If you do take on two, give each its own crate, its own training sessions and time apart every day, and teach each dog alone before you expect them to work as a pair.
Will a second dog cure my dog's separation anxiety?
Do not count on it. The AKC lists getting a second dog to calm a fearful one as a poor reason, since dogs can pass anxiety to each other. A dog who panics when you leave is often attached to you rather than lonely for any dog. Work on the anxiety with a trainer or your vet first, then decide about a second dog.
Can my two dogs share a playgroup at daycare?
Only if each dog's evaluation places it there. Groups are matched by size and temperament, so a young large dog and an older small one usually play in different groups and meet again at pick-up, and many pairs do better that way. Each dog gets its own report card, so you can see how both days went.
Do both dogs need a license and vaccines?
Yes. Every dog needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city license for daycare, the Academy, overnight stays or walks, and each completes its own free evaluation. In Gloucester each dog is licensed separately through the City Clerk; check the city's licensing page for the current fee before you apply.
