Half-day daycare vs a midday walk

The prices sit close together, so the choice turns on what your dog needs from the middle of the day: other dogs, or a short outing and its own sofa. This page compares the two on the criteria that decide it, works out the weekly cost, and shows where the Pup Van changes the sums.

What each gives

The half day is social, supervised exercise away from home; the walk is solo exercise and a break at home

A half day puts your dog in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, on the turf yard or the indoor floors, with a handler in the group and water and rest breaks between bouts of play. It is a morning, in by 9:30 and out at the 12 to 1 PM window, or an afternoon, in at midday and home between 4 and 6:30 PM. Your dog comes home having spent hours reading and playing with other dogs.

A midday walk is one Dogtown staff member, your dog and your neighborhood for 20, 30 or 60 minutes. Nobody else's dog is on the leash, the route is matched to your dog's age and fitness, and you get a photo and a short note when it ends. The rest of the day your dog is at home, which is exactly what a senior, a shy dog or a dog getting over an illness may want.

Cost per week

Three breaks a week cost less as 20-minute walks, and more as 30-minute walks, than three half days

Start with single prices. Three half days a week come to $99, three 20-minute walks to $75 and three 30-minute walks to $105. On packs the order holds: the half-day 10-pack is $290, or $29 a session, while the walk 10-packs are $225 for 20 minutes and $315 for 30. A regular 20-minute walk therefore costs less than a regular half day, and a regular 30-minute walk a little more.

The Pup Van changes the half-day sum. If nobody can make the drop-off window, the van collects and returns your dog for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, which puts a half day at $53 door to door. That is close to a 60-minute walk at $55, but it buys hours of play rather than one long outing. Ask the front desk which windows the van can meet for a half-day dog before you plan a week around it.

  • Three half days: $99 single, $87 on the 10-pack
  • Three 20-minute walks: $75 single, less on the 10-pack
  • Three 30-minute walks: $105 single, less on the 10-pack
  • A half day with the Pup Van both ways: $53

Who each suits

The half day wins for a social dog with energy; the walk wins for a dog who needs a break, not a crowd

Book half days for the young, playful dog who finds a quiet house dull, the adolescent who needs to burn energy with other dogs, and the dog home alone from the early train who would otherwise wait all morning. Matched play tires a social dog in a way a leash walk rarely does, and the long nap at home afterward is part of the value. If you work from home, a morning half day often buys a calm afternoon of calls.

Book the walk for the senior who loves a sniff around the block but not two hours of company, the shy or dog-selective dog, and the dog who did not settle at the evaluation. It also suits a young puppy who needs a toilet break more than a playgroup, and any dog who is content at home but cannot wait from breakfast until dinner. Solo means no other dogs at all, and for some dogs that is the whole point.

  • Half day: social adolescents, high-energy adults, dogs alone all morning
  • Walk: seniors, shy or dog-selective dogs, puppies who need a toilet break
  • Walk: dogs content at home who cannot wait all day
  • Either: a settled, social dog, depending on the day

Mixing them

Many weeks work best with both: half days on the long days and a walk on the short ones

Most households do not need one answer for every weekday. A dog can do half days on the two days the house is empty longest and a 20-minute walk on the days someone is home by mid-afternoon. Both services come from the same building and the same team, so one evaluation covers both, and the walker may already know your dog from the playgroup floor. Buy a half-day 5-pack and a walk 10-pack before committing to anything bigger.

Then watch the evenings. A dog who sleeps after a half day but paces after a walk is telling you it needs more play; a dog who comes home flat from a half day may do better with a 30-minute walk on that day instead. The report card and the walk note record how each day went, so after two weeks you are comparing real days rather than guesses.

Cape Ann seasons

Summer beach closures tilt Cape Ann dogs toward half days; the off-season favors the walk

From spring into fall the beaches close to dogs. At the time of writing Good Harbor shuts to dogs on April 1, Wingaersheek on May 1, and Rockport's beaches from June 1 to September 15, so a summer walk means sidewalks and shade in the cooler hours. A half day keeps a social dog moving through the hot weeks on the turf yard, with its pools and platforms, and on the indoor floors when the weather turns.

In the off-season the balance tips back. A morning on Good Harbor or Wingaersheek covers much of what a playgroup would, so a 20-minute walk at noon may be all a beach dog needs that day. Tick season, roughly April to November, applies to both choices: a walker who passes long grass and a dog who plays on the yard both need a quick check at home that evening.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is a half day or a walk cheaper per week?
It depends on the walk length. Three 20-minute walks at $25 cost less than three half days at $33, while three 30-minute walks at $35 cost more. Packs lower both: the half-day 10-pack is $290 and the 20-minute walk 10-pack is $225. Add $10 each way if the Pup Van brings your dog to its half day.
Can my dog have a walk and a half day on the same day?
Ask the front desk, since it depends on the walk schedule and the windows that day. Most dogs do not need both on one day, because a half day already covers exercise and company. The usual pattern is half days on the longest days and a walk on the days your dog stays home.
Does a solo walk count as socialization?
Only a little. A walk exposes your dog to sounds, smells, people and passing dogs at leash distance, which is useful practice, but it is not play with other dogs. A social puppy or adolescent who needs dog company gets it in a matched playgroup. A dog who struggles around other dogs is better served by the walk and, if needed, a training program.
Does my dog need separate evaluations for walks and daycare?
No, one free evaluation covers both. It runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 by appointment, with a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, and it needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file plus a current city license. After that you can book half days, walks or a mix of the two.
Will you walk my dog if I live outside Gloucester?
Ask us whether we cover your address. Walk availability depends on where you live and the time of year, so we confirm it for your street and the season before you plan around a noon slot. If walks are not possible, a half day with the Pup Van, $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, may fill the gap.
