Does my dog need an evaluation for an overnight stay?
Owners planning a trip often discover the evaluation late, a week before a Thanksgiving flight out of Logan, and want to know whether it can be skipped for a stay. It cannot, and this page explains why, what it involves, and how to time it so the first night away is a calm one.
The short version
No evaluation, no stay, and the reason is the daytime
An overnight guest at Dogtown spends the day in a playgroup, not in a kennel run. That is the whole design of the service, and it is why the evaluation is not optional: we will not place a dog into a group of 7 to 10 others without first seeing how it greets, plays, disengages and settles. The overnight suite is the easy part. The group is what has to be right.
The evaluation is free and it is the same one every daycare dog has done. If your dog already comes to daycare, Academy or walks with us, it is done and you can book nights straight away. If your dog is new, the evaluation is the first booking, and the stay is the second. The nights can be booked the same afternoon the evaluation ends.

How it works at Dogtown
One weekday morning, then the nights are open
The paperwork is the part that trips people up, so do it early. Gloucester licenses come from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave, $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee, and a current rabies certificate is required to get one; renewals are late after April 30 with a $20 penalty. The town halls in Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea issue their own licenses. Bring whatever your town issued.
The evaluation morning is also your chance to see the building: the play floors, the turf yard, the suites, and the grooming studio if you want a bath added before pick-up. Ask everything. Whether a bed from home fits, how medications are handled, what the Sunday windows look like. The front desk would rather answer it now than on the morning of your flight.

Timing
Do the evaluation weeks before the trip, not days
The evaluation runs on weekday mornings only, so if your stay starts on a Saturday you cannot do both in the same visit. Book it at least a week or two before the first night, and if the stay is around Thanksgiving, Christmas week or a February vacation week, earlier still, because both the evaluation slots and the suites are in demand then.
Cape Ann owners who commute on the Rockport line often use the early end of the window: drop off at Eastern Ave at 6:30, catch the train from Gloucester station, and hear how the morning went at pick-up. Others book the evaluation on a work-from-home day and add a first daycare day the week after. Either way, the point is the gap between the evaluation and the first night.

What it means for your dog
The evaluation is how the first night becomes a good one
For a puppy, the evaluation morning is often its first time in a group of unfamiliar dogs, and the few supervised hours tell us how much play it can take before it needs a quiet corner. We use that to pick the group and the length of the play day during the stay. A puppy who has also done a daycare day or two before its first night usually walks into the suite as if it owned it.
For adults and seniors the evaluation is about fit. An older dog who wants company but not chaos goes into a calmer circle; a confident adult goes where the play matches. Dogs with reactivity or anxiety are not automatically turned away, but we need to know in advance, and the evaluation is where our team decides what a safe stay looks like for that dog.
If it does not go to plan
A hard evaluation is information, not a verdict
Some dogs are not ready for a group on the first morning. That does not end the conversation. Our team will tell you plainly what they saw and what would help: a couple of half days to learn the building, a Dogtown Academy day with a trainer, or a training plan before a stay. What we will not do is put an unsettled dog into a suite for four nights and hope.
If your trip is fixed and your dog is not ready, say so early. The earlier we know, the more options there are, from a shorter first stay to a plan that gets your dog comfortable before the holiday rush. Call the front desk at 978 491-5922 and ask. Two weeks of notice is worth far more than two days.
