Cat grooming

Cat-only groomer vs a dog groomer who also takes cats

Cat owners are right to ask what else is in the building. Barking, dryers and the smell of dogs all register with a cat long before it reaches the table. This page sets out what each kind of groomer can offer, how our cat room is kept apart, and which cats are better served somewhere with no dogs at all.

The comparison

A cat-only shop removes dogs entirely; a mixed groomer has to keep them apart

The difference is what a cat hears and smells between the car and the table. In a cat-only shop there is nothing canine to manage. In a groomer who takes both, the separation has to be built: a room for cats, handling by people who work with cats, and a route from the door that keeps the cat away from the dog floors. The feline environment guidelines from the International Society of Feline Medicine and the American Association of Feline Practitioners make the same point for clinics: exposure to other species can be reduced, and spaces can be designed to lower a cat's stress.

At Dogtown, cats are groomed in a quiet room away from the dog areas by our cat behavior specialists, using gentle technique and as little restraint as the job allows. Every cat is assessed at the start of the visit so the service fits its coat and temperament. Prices go by service rather than weight: Minimal Trims, a trim and partial shave with no bath, is $45; the Full Bath, with nails and a brush-out, is $95; Full Service, a full bath plus shaving, trims and nails, is $120; and nail clipping on its own is $20.

What decides it

Noise, handling skill and scheduling decide the choice more than price

Noise is the obvious factor, and what counts is what reaches the cat, not what is somewhere in the building. A dog groomer's dryers and a barking dog two rooms away can matter more to a sensitive cat than anything on the table. Ask any mixed groomer where cats are groomed, whether they share a drying area with dogs, and what a cat hears while it waits. At Dogtown, ask the front desk which studio times tend to be quietest for cats when you book.

Handling skill is the second factor, and it varies within both models. A cat-only groomer works with cats every day; a mixed groomer may have one person who does, or several. Ask who will handle your cat, what they do when it starts to struggle, and whether they ever finish a groom by force. Our answer is the referral rule: if a cat cannot be groomed safely on the day, we stop, tell you what was done, and refer you to your vet rather than push a frightened cat through.

Price is the least predictable. Cat-only shops and mixed groomers set their own prices, often by coat length or condition, and we do not quote other businesses. What you can compare is the menu: whether a no-bath option exists for a cat who hates water, whether nails can be booked alone, and whether mats are priced separately or folded into a full service.

  • Ask where cats are groomed and what they can hear from there
  • Ask who handles cats and what happens when a cat struggles
  • Ask whether a groom ever continues by force; ours stops and refers
  • Compare menus: a no-bath option, nails alone, how mats are priced

Which cat, which groomer

Choose cat-only for the cat who panics at any dog; a separate cat room serves most others

Some cats are better off where there are no dogs at all. The cat who goes rigid at a bark through a window, the cat who has been attacked by a dog, and the cat who is panting in the carrier before the car has left the driveway all start the visit at a disadvantage in a building with dogs. For these cats a cat-only groomer, or a veterinary groom if handling itself is the problem, is the kinder choice, and we would rather say so than book them.

A separate cat room works well for the many cats who are wary rather than terrified: the long-haired cat with a matted belly, the senior who has stopped grooming its back end, the shedding shorthair in spring. It also suits households with a dog who already comes to Dogtown for daycare, since one trip down Eastern Ave might cover both; ask the front desk whether the cat's appointment can line up with the dog's drop-off. A cat with a wound, a skin infection or pain belongs with a vet first.

  • Cats terrified of dogs: a cat-only groomer
  • Cats who cannot be handled safely awake: your vet
  • Wary cats with mats, shedding or a senior coat: a separate cat room
  • Households with a daycare dog: ask about lining up both appointments

Carrier in, carrier out

Keep your cat in its carrier from your door to our cat room and back

The calmest cat visits keep the cat contained and covered until it reaches the cat room. A secure, hard-sided carrier with a towel over it blocks the lobby from view, and the carrier stays closed until our specialist is ready in the quiet room. At the end the cat goes back into the same carrier before it passes through the building again. The steps below show how to make that work, and how to set the visit up so the groom is no longer than the coat requires.

Arrive inside your booked time rather than early, so the carrier spends as little time as possible in a lobby where dogs come and go. Put something that smells of home in the carrier, such as the cat's own blanket or a worn T-shirt. At pick-up, keep the towel over the carrier until the cat is back in the car, and give it a quiet room at home for the rest of the day.

Cape Ann cats

On Cape Ann, the spring shed and the local vet list shape the choice

On Cape Ann, long-haired cats often reach spring with coats dried out by months of indoor heat, just as the spring shed begins. Book the Full Bath or Minimal Trims before the shed turns to felt, because a cat with widespread mats needs Full Service at $120 and more time on the table, which is exactly what a nervous cat does not want. Cats adopted through Cape Ann Animal Aid, the no-kill shelter in Gloucester, sometimes arrive with neglected coats, and their first groom is best kept short.

When we refer a cat, it goes to your own vet first. The City of Gloucester keeps a list of local and emergency veterinary offices, and the Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open 24 hours. Dogtown's studio is at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, a short drive from Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and the building opens at 6:30 AM on weekdays and 8 AM on Saturdays.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is it stressful for a cat to be groomed where dogs are?
It can be, if the cat hears and smells dogs throughout the visit, which is why the separation matters more than the sign on the door. At Dogtown cats are groomed in a quiet room away from the dog areas by cat behavior specialists, and a cat who is too distressed to continue is not pushed through, so the groom ends there with a referral to your vet.
Are cat-only groomers more expensive?
Prices vary by shop, and we do not quote other businesses. Compare the menus rather than a single headline number: what a full groom includes, whether a no-bath trim exists and whether nails can be booked alone. Ours are $45 for Minimal Trims, $95 for a Full Bath, $120 for Full Service and $20 for nail clipping.
Does my cat need an evaluation before grooming at Dogtown?
No separate appointment is needed. Book online or in the Dogtown app, and our specialist assesses your cat's coat and temperament at the start of the visit, then confirms which service fits. Tell us about mats, health problems or a difficult past groom when you book so the visit can be planned around them.
What happens if my cat cannot be groomed safely?
The groom stops at that point. You get your cat back with an account of what was and was not done, and we refer you to your vet, who can decide whether a medical groom is the right next step. We do not finish a groom on a cat that is fighting it, because the next visit would only be harder.
Can my dog's daycare day and my cat's groom share one trip?
Ask the front desk when you book; it depends on the studio's schedule that day. Dogs arrive in the drop-off windows, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and the cat's appointment is booked separately in the grooming studio. Keep the cat in its covered carrier while the dog is checked in.
