Cat groomer vs grooming at the vet: cost, handling and stress
Most cats never need either. The ones who do are long-haired cats who have stopped keeping up, cats with mats against the skin, seniors, and cats with a skin problem. The right place depends on why the cat needs grooming, and this page is honest about where a vet is the better answer.

Dogtown's cat studio has three services and one add-on. The Full Service at $120 is a full bath plus shaving, trims and nails, the right choice for a matted long-haired cat or a lion cut. The Full Bath at $95 includes water, nails and a brush-out, for the cat who is greasy, dandruffy or has got into something. Minimal Trims at $45 is a trim and partial shaving with no bath, for sanitary areas, belly mats or a tidy without the tub. Nail clipping on its own is $20. Every cat is evaluated before service so we choose the treatment that fits the coat and the temperament.
A veterinary clinic prices grooming as part of a medical visit, so the figure usually includes an exam and may include sedation, bloodwork before sedation, and treatment of whatever the groom uncovers. We do not quote other practices. What you are paying for is different: a vet groom is a procedure with a doctor on hand. For a healthy cat that is more than is needed; for a sick or unmanageable cat it is exactly what is needed.

What changes the price
Coat condition and temperament set the studio tier; sedation and medical findings set the vet's bill
In the studio the service tier is the price, and the tier is chosen at the assessment. A cat who arrives for Minimal Trims with mats through the whole coat becomes a Full Service, because pulling a comb through felted fur hurts and shaving is the kind option. A cat who cannot be handled safely is not pushed through the groom: we stop, tell you what we saw, and refer you to your veterinarian. Nervous cats get more time and a slower pace rather than more restraint.
At a vet, sedation is the big variable. Where the veterinarian judges that a cat cannot be groomed safely awake, or where the groom is part of treating a skin condition, sedation adds the drug, monitoring and often pre-sedation bloodwork for an older cat. Findings add more: an abscess under a mat, a flea burden, an ear infection. None of that is padding. It is the reason to be at a vet rather than a studio when the cat is unwell.

Which to choose
Choose the studio for a healthy cat; choose the vet when there is a medical reason
The studio is for the healthy cat with a coat problem: the Maine Coon or domestic longhair who has stopped grooming the back half and is matting along the spine, the Persian who needs a sanitary trim and eye-area tidy every few weeks, the ragdoll due a lion cut before summer, the elderly shorthair gone greasy and dandruffy because bending to wash is painful. Each of these is a handling problem, not a medical one, and low-stress handling in a quiet room is the right tool.
The vet is for the cat where the groom is secondary. A cat with an open wound under a mat, a suspected skin infection, ringworm, a heavy flea burden with anemia risk, or a cat in pain who bites when touched belongs with a veterinarian who can examine, treat and, if the vet decides it is necessary, sedate. A cat who could not be handled safely in a studio also belongs at the vet. Seniors and cats with heart or kidney disease deserve a conversation with the vet before either option, and the answer is often a short Minimal Trims visit rather than a full bath, with the vet's blessing.

Cats are groomed in a quiet room away from the dog floors, one at a time, by cat behavior specialists trained to read feline body language and stop before stress builds. Restraint is minimal, the pace is unhurried, and the products are cat-safe. Every cat is assessed on arrival so the service fits the coat and the temperament. There is no evaluation appointment to book beforehand; you book online or in the Dogtown app and the assessment happens at check-in.
The groom stops if a cat cannot be handled safely. That is the whole point of low-stress handling: a cat who escalates to biting or open-mouth panting is not pushed through, because the next groom would be worse. New England cats blow coat twice: a heavy spring shed as the days lengthen in April and May, and a lighter fall shed in September and October before the winter coat sets. Indoor cats under artificial light shed a little all year. Long-haired cats mat worst at the tail end of the spring shed, so a Full Service or Minimal Trims in May prevents the June emergency. Flea season on the North Shore runs with tick season, roughly April to November, and a heavy flea burden is a vet visit first and a bath second.
