What happens at a cat grooming appointment?

Cat owners ask this more than dog owners do, because most cats have never been groomed by anyone but themselves. Here is the appointment from the carrier to the drive home on Route 128, so you know what to expect and what your cat will experience.

The short version

One quiet room, one groomer, and a pace set by the cat

A cat groom at Dogtown is not a smaller version of a dog groom. The room is different, the tools are different and the handling is different. Your cat is carried in, given a few minutes to look around, and then worked on by a single groomer who is a cat behavior specialist. Nothing is hurried. If the cat needs a pause, the cat gets a pause.

How long it takes depends on the service and the cat. A nail clip can be over in ten minutes. A Full Service on a matted Maine Coon can take well over an hour, with rest stops. We give you a time to come back rather than asking you to wait, and we call if the plan changes once we see the coat.

At Dogtown

From booking to pick-up, the visit runs in seven steps

The sequence below is the same for every cat, whether it is a Rockport barn cat coming in for nails or a show-coated Persian from Manchester-by-the-Sea booked for the Full Service. What changes is the time spent at each stage. The one thing not on the list is an evaluation appointment. Dog daycare, Academy, overnight stays and walks require a free evaluation first; grooming, for dogs and cats, does not.

You pay for the service you booked. Nail clipping is $20 on its own. Minimal Trims, at $45, are a trim and partial shaving with no bath. The Full Bath is $95 and includes a brush-out and nails. The Full Service, at $120, is the full bath plus shaving, trims and nails. If the coat turns out to need more than you booked, the groomer calls you before doing it.

For your cat

Most cats settle inside a few minutes once the room goes quiet

The studio is the reason cats do better here than people expect. There are no barking dogs on the other side of the wall, no cages of other cats waiting, and no dryer roaring in the corner while another animal is on the table. The groomer talks quietly, keeps restraint to a minimum and uses a towel or a hand rather than a tether wherever possible.

Signs we watch for are the ones you would recognize at home: a lashing tail, flattened ears, skin rippling along the back, a low growl. When they show up, the tool goes down and the cat gets a break. A cat who escalates past what can be handled safely is not pushed through. That cat goes home, and we suggest you talk to your vet about how to proceed. Baths, the part owners worry about most, usually go fine once the cat has been combed and is lowered into warm water slowly, feet first.

Before you arrive

A carrier, a light meal and an honest note about the coat make the visit easier

Bring the cat in a carrier, every time, even if it rides loose in the car at home. The front hall at Dogtown is a dog daycare lobby at drop-off time, and a cat in arms can panic at the first bark. Feed a light meal a couple of hours before rather than right before, so the cat is settled but not nauseous on the drive.

Tell us the truth about the coat when you book. Mats hidden under a clean top layer change the plan and the time. So does a cat who bites at the comb, a senior who is stiff behind, or a kitten who has never been on a table. None of it is a problem. All of it helps the groomer choose the right pace from the first minute.

Can I stay with my cat during the groom?

Ask when you book. In our experience most cats are calmer without their person in the room, because they stop looking for a way back to you and settle into the groomer's hands. If your cat has a specific reason to need you present, tell the front desk and we will talk it through.

How long will my cat be at Dogtown?

A nail clip is usually done within the hour. A Full Bath or Full Service with drying takes longer, and a matted coat longer still, because we work in short blocks with breaks. We give you a pick-up time when you drop off and call if the cat is ready early or needs more time.

Does my cat need vaccinations for grooming?

There is no evaluation appointment before a cat groom, so ask the front desk when you book what records they would like on file; a rabies certificate from your vet is the easiest thing to bring. If your cat is unwell, has a skin condition or has just had surgery, see the vet first and book the groomer once they have cleared it.

What if my cat panics on the table?

The groomer stops, gives the cat a break and tries again more slowly. Many cats settle on the second attempt. If a cat cannot be handled safely, we do not force the groom. We send the cat home and suggest you speak to your vet about the options, then rebook once there is a plan.
