Boarding vs board and train: a stay, or a stay that teaches
The two look alike from the outside: your dog sleeps at 210 Eastern Ave either way. What differs is what fills the daytime hours, who is responsible for the outcome, and whether you are buying care or a result.

The stay is priced by the night; board and train is priced as a program
The overnight suite is $78 a night and the day is a normal daycare day: a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, the turf yard, water and rest breaks, and staff on site through the night. The Classic bundle adds a daily pupsicle and 10 percent off grooming for $10 a night; the Deluxe adds a stuffed Kong, a daily treadmill or enrichment session, a memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming for $15. Nothing is taught on purpose, though many dogs come home calmer for the routine.
Board and train is a training program with the stay built in. Foundation runs one week for puppies, young dogs and basic manners: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, crate and household manners, with daycare integration, enrichment, daily updates and a go-home lesson. Advanced runs two weeks for adolescents who need real-world reliability, adding distraction proofing, outings off the property, neutrality work, confidence building, structured socialization and two scheduled go-home coaching lessons. Sessions start from $94 and we confirm the plan and the investment after an assessment, because every program is written for the dog in front of us.

What changes the cost
Nights and bundles set the stay's total; the assessment sets the program's
For the stay, the math is nights times $78, plus a bundle if you want one, plus any groom before pick-up: a bath from $55 or a full service from $75 by size. Enrichment add-ons cost $5 to $10 each. Holiday weeks do not change the nightly rate but they fill early, and members of the $700 unlimited daycare plan get priority on those reservations, which matters most around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
For board and train, the program length is the lever, and it is chosen by need rather than budget. A five-month-old who pulls, jumps and has never held a stay is a Foundation dog. A fourteen-month-old who is fine in the kitchen and a mess on Main Street in Gloucester needs the second week, because reliability around real distractions is what the Advanced fortnight buys. Gabriella Pope assesses each dog before we quote, so the investment reflects the plan.

Which to choose
Choose the stay when you need care; choose the program when you need change
Book the overnight stay when the question is simply where the dog goes while you are away. A well-mannered adult who loves the playgroup does not need lessons, and paying for training you did not ask for is poor value. The same goes for a dog already in a training program with us: keep that program on its schedule and use the stay as the stay, with a report card in the app each day.
Book board and train when the problem is behavior and the constraint is your time. The classic case is the household about to have a baby, or one where both adults commute on the Rockport line and the adolescent dog has learned that nobody is home to say otherwise. Two focused weeks with daily trainer time achieve what six weekends of good intentions do not, provided you show up for the go-home lessons, because habits taught here are transferred to you, not installed. Do not book it for a dog with serious fear or reactivity expecting a cure: those dogs belong in the Level 3 programs, Focus & Flow, React Less Relax More or Polished Pup, with you in the room, and our trainers will say so at the assessment.

The path
How a board and train week runs, from assessment to go-home lesson
Everything starts with the training form on the contact page; we answer within one hour on business days. Gabriella Pope or one of our trainers then runs a short assessment to place the dog in Foundation or Advanced and to write the plan. The free evaluation for daycare integration happens on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city dog license before the first day.
During the stay your dog trains daily in short blocks, joins a matched playgroup when appropriate, and rests in a suite at night, with a daily update to you. Foundation ends with one go-home lesson at pick-up; Advanced ends with two scheduled coaching lessons so the new habits survive the drive home to Rockport or Essex. Practice what the updates show you, ten minutes a day, from the first evening back.

Cape Ann
How Cape Ann affects it: outings, the summer beach ban and holiday weeks
Advanced board and train includes real-world outings, and Cape Ann is a good classroom for them. Between October 1 and April 30 Gloucester's beaches allow dogs, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, which gives a two-week dog sand, wind, gulls and distance to practice recall against. In summer those beaches are closed to dogs, and Rockport's from June 1 to September 15, so outings move to downtown sidewalks, Stage Fort Park and the trails at Ravenswood Park.
Holiday weeks favor the plain stay. Thanksgiving and the days around Christmas are when families need care, not curriculum, and the suites fill accordingly. School vacation weeks in February and April are when board and train bookings cluster, because families travel and want the dog to come home better than it left. Whichever you choose, the Pup Van can do the drop-off and collection for $10 each way in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
