How long does board and train take to work?
Nobody can promise a finished dog on a date. What we can describe is what gets worked on in each week, why a second week exists, and what makes the results last once your dog is back on Eastern Ave with you.
The short version
The short version: one or two weeks to install the behaviors, then the clock restarts at home
A board and train stay compresses training into concentrated days. Instead of two sessions a week, your dog gets several short blocks every day with a trainer, with rest and enrichment between. That is why one week can cover what a class covers in a month. Foundation, one week, is for puppies, young dogs and missing manners; Advanced, two weeks, adds the outside world for adolescents who lose their cues in public.
The honest limit is that a dog learns in context. Behaviors built at 210 Eastern Ave arrive in your kitchen as strong suggestions rather than fixed habits, and your practice in the first weeks home decides which they become. That is why both stays end with go-home lessons and why the daily updates matter: by pick-up you already know what the dog can do and what it still finds hard.

At Dogtown
How it works at Dogtown: a suite at night, training by day, and what each stretch of the stay is for
Your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring and moves by day between training blocks with Gabriella Pope or her team, rest, enrichment such as a puzzle or the sniff room and, when appropriate, a matched playgroup of 7 to 10. Because it is an overnight stay, the free evaluation applies: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM by appointment, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city license.
The first day or two are for settling; a dog in a new building is not ready to learn much, so the early blocks are short, food-heavy and easy while the trainer reads the dog. From midweek the Foundation work runs: place, stay, recall, loose-leash walking, impulse control, crate and household manners. Week two, in Advanced, takes those skills outside with distraction proofing, outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization. Every evening you get an update on what was worked on and what clicked.

For your dog
What it means for your dog: puppies learn fast and forget fast, adolescents need the second week, some dogs need a different program
A puppy or young dog in Foundation usually shows the clearest change at pick-up, because there is little to undo and much to build, and it also loses the gains fastest if the household relaxes. Practise daily for the first month. An adolescent in Advanced changes more slowly and more durably, because the second week is spent proofing cues against exactly the distractions that used to defeat them.
A reactive or fearful dog is not a board and train candidate at Dogtown, however long the stay. Reactivity is an emotional response and changing it needs you on the leash from day one, so Gabby places those dogs in Focus & Flow, React Less, Relax More or Polished Pup, or in Canine Campus, where the dog trains by day and sleeps at home. Choosing the right program is the largest single factor in how long training takes to work.

Making it last
Why results fade, and the Cape Ann habits that keep them
Skills fade when the dog stops being paid for them and when they are never practised anywhere new. The fix is small and local. Run the place cue while dinner cooks. Walk the loose-leash route on Eastern Ave, then the wide trails of Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester, which welcomes dogs, then past the fence at Stage Fort Park. In the off-season, test the recall on an empty Gloucester beach: dogs are allowed October 1 to April 30, Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days and Good Harbor on even days until April 1, at the time of writing.
Winter is when routines slip. A nor'easter week with no walks is a week of lost repetitions, so keep a five-minute indoor plan for storm days and watch the National Weather Service Boston forecast before a long trip.
