Cat lion cut in Gloucester: when shaving is the kind option
Shaving a cat is not a fashion decision. It is the answer when a long coat has matted past brushing, when an older cat has stopped grooming itself, or when a household has run out of ways to keep hair off the furniture and out of the cat. This page explains when a lion cut helps, what the appointment looks like in our Gloucester studio, and what it costs.

A lion cut is for the coat that has stopped working for the cat
Three cats walk into our studio for a lion cut. The first is a long-haired cat, often a Maine Coon or a Maine Coon mix, whose undercoat has felted into plates along the belly, behind the ears and under the armpits. The second is a senior who has grown stiff, stopped reaching the back half of its body, and now carries a greasy, clumped coat that pulls at the skin. The third is a healthy cat in a busy household where hair, hairballs and constant knots have become a daily fight.
A lion cut is not the right call for every long-haired cat. A cat with a clean, brushed coat that simply sheds a lot does better with the Full Bath at $95, which includes a thorough brush-out. A cat with a few isolated mats is a Minimal Trims appointment at $45, where the mats are clipped and the rest of the coat is left alone. Our groomer confirms which your cat needs after the assessment, and we do not shave a coat that does not need it.

The appointment
The groom is slow, quiet and paused the moment your cat needs a break
Cats are groomed in their own room at Dogtown, away from the daycare floors, so the sounds and smells that put a cat on edge stay on the other side of the wall. Our cat behavior specialists work with minimal restraint and an unhurried pace. They watch the ears, the tail and the skin along the back, and they stop when the cat asks them to. That is what low-stress means here in practice: the cat sets the tempo, not the clock.
Before any clipper touches the coat, the groomer assesses coat condition and temperament and confirms the plan with you: how much of the mane stays, whether the tail keeps its plume, where the boots end on the legs. The body is clipped short with a blade chosen for the coat and the skin underneath. Then comes the full bath with cat-safe products, careful drying, tidying trims around the face and paws, and a nail clip. A cat who cannot be handled safely on the day is not forced through it. We stop and refer you to your vet.

Price
$120 for the Full Service lion cut, $45 if only the mats need to go
The lion cut is priced as our Full Service cat groom: $120 for the shave, the full bath, trims and nails together. There is no separate lion cut line and no surcharge for coat length or breed. If the coat is matted but the rest of the cat is fine, Minimal Trims at $45 clips the mats and does a partial shave without a bath. A Full Bath at $95 covers water, nails and a brush-out with no shaving. A standalone cat nail clip is $20.

We are closed on Sundays apart from overnight-stay pick-up and drop-off, so cat appointments run Monday to Saturday.

Why Dogtown
A separate cat room and handlers who read cats, not a dog salon with a cat slot
Most grooming on Cape Ann is built around dogs, and a cat squeezed into a dog salon's afternoon hears every bark through the door. At Dogtown the cat studio is its own space inside our 10,000 square foot building on Eastern Ave, and the people in it are cat behavior specialists trained to read feline body language. Every cat is assessed first, so the treatment fits the coat and temperament in front of us.
We also know when to say no. A cat who is terrified, in pain from tight mats against the skin, or showing signs of a medical problem under the coat is better served by a veterinarian than by a groomer being brave. In that case we stop, tell you what we saw, and refer you to your vet. For after-hours emergencies, Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn runs 24 hours a day, and Gloucester publishes its own list of local emergency veterinary offices.

Getting here
Eastern Ave in Gloucester, Monday to Saturday, on the road to Rockport
Dogtown is at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, on Route 127 between East Gloucester and the Rockport line, so the studio is an easy stop for cat owners from either end of Cape Ann. Business hours are Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM. If you also have a dog in daycare, book the cat's appointment on a morning your dog is already coming in and make a single trip of it.
Cape Ann weather has a say in the calendar. If a nor'easter makes Route 128 or Eastern Ave a bad idea, call us and we will move the appointment; we would rather reschedule than have you drive a carrier through a storm. The drive is often the most stressful part of the day for them, so keep it short and quiet and let us take over from the lobby.
