In Manchester-by-the-Sea the license year begins on April 1, earlier than most owners expect and two weeks before Singing Beach closes to dogs for the summer. The license

$20 or $25, from April 1, through the Town of Manchester-by-the-Sea

Manchester licenses run on a fixed year, April 1 to March 31, and the town issues them. At the time of writing a license is $20 for a neutered dog and $25 for a dog that is not, and a current rabies certificate is needed to get one. The town's Dog Licenses page lists how to apply, whether online or at Town Hall, and what late charge applies to a license bought after the year has already begun.

The $5 difference is the town's nudge toward spaying and neutering, the same nudge Gloucester makes with its lower fee for altered dogs. Bring proof of the surgery the first time you license and the town has it on record for later years. If your dog is intact for breeding or on a vet's advice, budget for the $25 and do not let the difference delay the errand past April 1.

The calendar

April 1 is the renewal, April 14 is the last beach day, and the two are linked

The Manchester dog's spring is tight. The license year opens April 1. Singing Beach closes to dogs after April 14. The two weeks in between are the only window when a dog can walk the beach on a new-year license, and an owner who renews in March never has a question at the gate. Renew early, put the new tag on the collar, and the last beach fortnight is yours without a second thought.

Rabies timing matters just as much. A certificate that expires in March means no license on April 1, and no license means no Singing Beach, since the beach admits licensed and vaccinated dogs only. Check the certificate in February, book the booster if it is close, and the license follows without a hitch. Tick season on Cape Ann runs April to November, so that February vet visit is also the moment to talk about prevention for the year.

Singing Beach

Licensed, vaccinated, two per person: the Singing Beach dog rule

At the time of writing Singing Beach takes dogs from October 15 to April 14. They must be licensed and vaccinated, an owner may bring two dogs at most, and while beach staff are on duty a walk-on fee applies. It is one of the few beaches on the North Shore where the license is actively part of the rule.

Outside those dates, Manchester dogs have the Coolidge Reservation, where dogs are allowed only on the short leg from the trailhead and never on the beach itself, and other Trustees properties nearby under the Trustees' dog guidelines. In town, follow the leash and waste rules as posted. The town's Dog Licenses page and the beach's own rules are the places to check before each season, because dates and fees are set locally and do get revised.

How Dogtown fits

Six closed-beach months, covered by daycare and the Pup Van

From April 15 to October 14 the beach is off the table, and that is when Manchester households book Dogtown. A full day is $42, a half day $33, and the unlimited membership at $700 a month suits a dog who comes most weekdays. Manchester-by-the-Sea is one of the four Pup Van towns, with Gloucester, Rockport and Essex, at $10 each way, so the drive along Route 127 to Eastern Ave is optional.

The first step is a free evaluation, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. Bring the Manchester license, the rabies certificate and the DHPP and Bordetella records. The evaluation places your dog in a group of 7 to 10 dogs by size and temperament. Grooming needs no evaluation, and a bath from $55 after the last April beach walk is a popular way to close the season.

New to town

Moving to Manchester with a dog: license first, beach second

New arrivals should license the dog with the town as soon as they have an address, whatever the month, because a license from Beverly or Boston does not carry over. Bring the rabies certificate from your previous vet; if it is close to expiring, find a vet before you find the beach. Whether a mid-year license costs the full $20 or $25 is a question for the town, so ask when you apply rather than assume.

The other first-week task is finding the dog's people. A daycare evaluation is a quick way for a new dog to meet a matched group and for you to meet the front desk that will hold your dog's records. Many Manchester dogs come to us the month they arrive, and the first report card in the app is often the first news of the dog settling into its new town.
