Gloucester Schooner Festival with a dog: Labor Day weekend on the harbor

The Gloucester Schooner Festival brings visiting schooners and the city's own working vessels into Gloucester Harbor over Labor Day weekend. At the time of writing the program includes boats on display at the docks, racing out on the water and a parade of sail across the harbor that people line the waterfront to watch. Maritime Gloucester publishes the current schedule and it changes year to year, so use their page rather than last year's memory.

From a dog's point of view the weekend is a standing crowd along a warm seawall, horns and announcements from the boats, gulls, dropped food and very little shade. Early September on Cape Ann can still run humid, and the sun off the water doubles the heat coming up from the granite. The docks themselves are narrow and busy, with ropes, gangways and gaps between boat and pier that no dog on a leash should be near.

Saturday is the easy day. Dogtown is open 8 AM to 6 PM on Saturdays, with drop-off and pick-up windows of 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. Drop off in the morning, spend the day at the docks, and collect a dog who has spent it in a small matched playgroup on the turf with pools and shade. The full day is $42 and the half day, morning or afternoon, is $33.

The parade of sail is the day most people come for, so check which day it falls on this year. If it lands on a Sunday, when we are closed for daycare, the fix is an overnight stay: book Saturday night at $78 and pick up on Sunday between 4 and 6 PM after the boats have passed. Ask the front desk about Labor Day Monday hours when you book. If your dog is happier at home, a 30-minute at-home walk at $35 covers the hours you are on the water; ask us whether we cover your address. Everything starts with the free evaluation on a weekday morning, and those mornings fill in late summer, so book it in mid-August.
