Rockport HarvestFest with a dog: chowder, crowds and Bearskin Neck

HarvestFest is an autumn festival in downtown Rockport, with vendors, music, family activities and chowder along Main Street and toward Bearskin Neck. Rockport's downtown is a tight grid of narrow streets and shop fronts, and on a festival day it fills quickly, with parking pushed out to the edges of town. The date changes every year and we have not found a single authoritative schedule to quote, so confirm the day with the town of Rockport and the listings at Discover Gloucester.

The setting matters more than the schedule for a dog. Bearskin Neck is a narrow spit of shops and galleries with granite underfoot, water on three sides and doorways that open straight onto the walkway. Add a chowder tasting, food stalls, dropped fried dough and a slow-moving crowd and you have a street that smells irresistible and offers no room to step aside. A sunny fall afternoon on granite still warms up, and the wind off the harbor turns cold the moment the sun drops.

If HarvestFest lands on a Saturday, Dogtown is open from 8 AM to 6 PM with drop-off and pick-up between 8 and 10 AM, 12 and 1 PM and 4 and 6 PM. The day costs $42, or $33 for a morning or afternoon half. Your dog spends it in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, on the turf yard in the cool fall air, while you eat chowder on Bearskin Neck with both hands free and nobody pulling toward the fried dough.

Rockport is one of the four Pup Van towns. For $10 each way, our van collects your dog from a Rockport address and brings it back, so you never hunt for a downtown parking space with a dog in the back seat. If the festival runs on a Sunday, when we are closed for daycare, book Saturday night as an overnight stay at $78 and collect your dog on Sunday between 4 and 6 PM. A beach walk on wet sand followed by a bath-only groom, from $55 by size, can be added to any daycare day. A dog new to Dogtown needs the free evaluation first, on a weekday morning, and September is a good month for it, before the festival weekends arrive.
