Donovan Reservation and Sagamore Hill with your dog: hilltop meadows in Hamilton
Greenbelt bought the Donovan land in 2016 and 2017 after a $5.1 million community campaign, and from its open hilltops you can see the mouth of the Essex River, Cape Ann and the Atlantic. Next door is Sagamore Hill, the last home and burial site of the Pawtucket sagamore Masconomet. That mix of views, working fields and sacred ground sets the terms for a walk with a dog.
The rule
Greenbelt's dog rules apply, and two places on this land ask for extra care
The Donovan property page lists dog walking among nine activities, from geocaching and letterboxing to horseback riding and mountain biking. The rules come from Greenbelt's policies, which cover every property unless its own page says otherwise: carry a leash, leash an aggressive dog, keep noise down, never leave a dog unattended, prevent digging and carry out the waste. Use runs sunrise to sunset. The land straddles Hamilton, whose by-law asks for a leash off your own premises, and Essex, which has no town leash law, so Greenbelt's guidelines are the steady rule across the town line.
Two features call for a short leash whatever a sign says. Some fields are active hayfields left uncut until late summer so bobolinks and eastern meadowlarks can finish nesting, which makes a loose dog in tall grass a dog in a nest site. And Greenbelt asks visitors to respect Sagamore Hill, the burial site of Masconomet, his wife and others of his band, as sacred ground. Greenbelt's trail guidelines say to stay on marked trails, and a leashed dog keeps you inside that rule.
- Dog walking: listed by Greenbelt here
- Carry a leash and use it where required
- Stay on marked trails, out of the hayfields
- Respect the burial ground on Sagamore Hill
The land
Three miles of trail over Blueberry Hill and Willow Hill, with Cape Ann on the horizon
Greenbelt counts 269 acres and 3 miles of trails over moderate terrain. Its 2022 map names the high points: Blueberry Hill in the western woods, Willow Hill to the east with a marked scenic viewpoint, and Sagamore Hill to the south beside the burial ground. The Clamshell Road Trail runs across the northern part of the reservation, a short boardwalk sits near the northern parking area, and a trail leaves the western edge marked to the Scenic Bridge, 0.7 miles away.
The reward is the view. Greenbelt says the open hilltop looks out to the mouth of the Essex River, Cape Ann and the Atlantic beyond, so a Gloucester dog owner can stand on a Hamilton hill and look back toward home. The fields and woods hold plenty of other company: Greenbelt lists deer, coyote, red fox, fisher and turkey as abundant, with great horned and barred owls for patient visitors. A dog that tracks every scent will find this a very busy hillside.
Parking
Two parking areas on Greenbelt's map, with 473 Sagamore Street as the address
Greenbelt gives 473 Sagamore Street, Hamilton, as the address, and its map shows two parking areas: one at the northern end beside a kiosk and the boardwalk, and one to the south at the Donovan Playing Fields, off Sagamore Street. The property page lists no fee and no hours beyond Greenbelt's sunrise-to-sunset rule. Clip the leash on before the car door opens, because both lots sit off a public road and the southern one is beside the playing fields.
Map discipline matters because the reservation is a patchwork. Greenbelt's map marks private parcels on several sides and a USAF solar radio observatory near Sagamore Hill, and Greenbelt also holds six donated conservation restrictions on private land in Hamilton, Essex and Ipswich that together form a 525-acre protected corridor. Protected land is not always land open to walkers, so follow the trail map and the boundary signs, and save the map to your phone before you leave home.

Seasons
Late-cut hay, busy wildlife and bow season decide when to go
The fields run on a bird calendar. Greenbelt says some are hayfields left uncut until late summer so bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks and pollinating insects can complete their breeding cycles, while others are mowed once a year or less for species like monarch butterflies, woodcock and cottontail rabbits. Spring and early summer are when a dog in the grass does the most harm, so those are the months to keep the leash shortest. After the late-summer cut the fields look open, but the trails are still the place to walk.
With coyote and fox listed as abundant, a dog on a short leash is safer for everyone, especially toward dusk, when Greenbelt land closes. In the fall, Greenbelt allows archery deer hunting with written permission on some properties and does not say whether this is one; MassWildlife's 2026 archery season runs October 5 to November 28, and Sundays are free of hunting in Massachusetts. Ticks are the summer cost: the CDC's busiest months are April to September, so check your dog at the car.
- Spring and early summer: the hayfields are nesting habitat
- Coyote and fox are common: keep the leash short
- Fall weekdays and Saturdays: blaze orange on you and your dog
- Ticks: check ears, armpits and paws before the drive home
Dogtown
Essex homes get the Pup Van for daycare; either town gets a bath with no evaluation
We do not take dogs to Donovan or Sagamore Hill. The reservation straddles Hamilton and Essex, and that matters for one Dogtown service: the Pup Van collects and returns dogs booked for daycare, Dogtown Academy or an overnight stay for $10 each way at homes in Essex, Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Hamilton addresses are outside the van towns, so ask us about pick-up. A full daycare day is $42 in a matched group of 7 to 10, after a free weekday evaluation.
After a muddy loop, a bath and brush at our Gloucester studio is $55 to $95 by size and books online without an evaluation. Nail clipping is $16, and a whitening shampoo at $8 helps a light coat stained by trail mud. Book the next groom at pick-up and that appointment is $5 less. Grooming appointments cancelled without notice carry a $10 fee, so move the booking in the app if the walk runs long.
