Chebacco Woods with your dog: leash rules, trails and parking

Hamilton and Manchester-by-the-Sea bought these woods from Gordon College in 1997, and at the time it was the largest single conveyance of land for public conservation on the North Shore since World War II. A joint committee, the Chebacco Woods Land Management Committee, runs the land and keeps the trails. Its rules for dogs are short and specific, and this page sets them out as published in fall 2026.

The rule

Hamilton's leash law applies, and strict control is the standard either way

The committee's page is direct: the Hamilton leash law applies in Chebacco Woods, and a dog must be under strict control while it exercises there, on a leash or off it. Hamilton's animal control bylaw, Chapter XVIII of the town bylaws, says no dog may be at large in town, and that a dog off its owner's premises, and not on someone else's land with their consent, must be controlled and restrained by a leash of appropriate length.

Read together, the bylaw asks for a leash and the committee adds a control standard that applies in every case, so we would plan on the leash. The bylaw also sets a $15 pick-up fee for any dog the town picks up, on top of boarding or treatment costs, and complaints follow the state schedule in General Laws Chapter 140, Section 173A. An earlier committee notice, still on the town site, added that dogs must be leashed at all times on the abutting Gordon College land.

  • The Hamilton leash law applies across the woods
  • Strict control required, leashed or not
  • A $15 pick-up fee if the town picks up your dog
  • Leash at all times on the abutting Gordon College land

The ponds

Round Pond and Gravelly Pond are for paddlers and anglers, not for swimming dogs

The committee allows kayaking and canoeing on Round Pond and Gravelly Pond, and fishing as long as no motorized craft is used. Dogs are another matter: they are not permitted to swim in any of the ponds on the property. That rule surprises owners who treat every pond as a place to cool a dog down, so plan the walk with water in your pack and a collapsible bowl rather than a swim at the halfway point.

The reason is older than the current page. A 2016 notice from the committee, still posted on the town site, said both ponds are part of the public water supply, that nobody may swim in either, and that dogs and horses must stay at least 100 feet from both to comply with state and federal water quality rules. The current page does not repeat the 100-foot distance, so ask the Hamilton Conservation Commission coordinator whether it still applies before you walk the shoreline.

  • No dogs swimming in any pond on the property
  • Kayaks, canoes and fishing allowed, without motors
  • Ask the Conservation Commission about the 100-foot pond buffer

Trails

Committee-kept trails shared with bikes, joggers and horses

The committee maintains the trails and provides maps for anyone using the woods for passive recreation, and it allows hiking, biking, jogging and equestrian use. That mix shapes a dog walk. A dog on a leash will meet mountain bikes on the descents and riders on the wider paths, so a short leash on the blind corners matters more here than it would on a reserve limited to walkers.

When a horse approaches, stop, step to the side with your dog on the far side from the horse, and let the rider pass before you move on. When bikes come through, call your dog in close before they reach you. A dog that has never met a horse may bark or freeze, which is a good reason to start with a quiet weekday morning and a shorter loop.

Parking and season

Limited parking on Chebacco Road, and a fall with no hunting season

The entrances are off Chebacco Road in Hamilton, where there is limited public parking for people using the woods. The committee's 2016 notice also listed an entrance off Essex Street near Woodbury Street. Limited means limited: if the roadside spaces are full, come back another time rather than parking across a driveway or a gate. The woods open at dawn and close at dusk every day of the year.

Unlike some reservations nearby, Chebacco Woods has no hunting season: the committee says hunting is not permitted, and overnight camping is not allowed either. Greenwood Farm in Ipswich and Ward Reservation in Andover both run fall bow seasons, so Chebacco is a useful October to December walk. Ticks are the season that does apply; the CDC lists April to September as the peak, with exposure possible in any month, in grassy, brushy and wooded ground.

Getting to Dogtown

Hamilton is outside the Pup Van towns; Manchester-by-the-Sea is inside them

Chebacco Woods sits on a town line, and so does the Pup Van. Manchester-by-the-Sea is one of the four Pup Van towns, with Rockport, Gloucester and Essex, where the van collects and returns a dog for $10 each way. Hamilton is outside them, so Hamilton families should ask us about pick-up or drive, by Route 22 into Essex and Route 133 to Route 128, then 128 to its end in Gloucester and Eastern Avenue.

Daycare at 210 Eastern Ave is $42 a full day or $33 a half day, in playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, and the turf yard has pools for the dogs who miss a swim. A dog that comes back from the woods coated in trail mud can have a bath with no evaluation, from $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds. Daycare, Academy, overnight stays and walks all begin with the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Do dogs need a leash in Chebacco Woods?
Plan on one. The committee that manages the woods says the Hamilton leash law applies there, and Hamilton's bylaw requires a dog off its owner's premises to be restrained by a leash of appropriate length. The committee adds that every dog, on a leash or off it, must be under strict control. An earlier notice listed the abutting Gordon College land as leash-only at all times.
Can my dog swim in Gravelly Pond or Round Pond?
No. The committee states that dogs may not swim in any of the ponds on the property. A 2016 committee notice described both ponds as part of the public water supply and asked that dogs stay 100 feet back; confirm that distance with the Hamilton Conservation Commission. Kayaks, canoes and fishing without motors are allowed for people.
Is there hunting in Chebacco Woods?
No. The committee's page says hunting is not permitted in Chebacco Woods, and overnight camping is not allowed either. That makes it a calmer fall choice than reservations with a bow season, such as Ward Reservation and Greenwood Farm, which allow authorized bow hunting from the first Monday in October through December, except on Sundays.
Where do I park for Chebacco Woods?
The entrances are off Chebacco Road in Hamilton, with limited public parking along the road for people using the woods. A 2016 committee notice also listed an entrance off Essex Street near Woodbury Street. The woods are open from dawn to dusk all year, so arrive with enough light for the loop you plan.
Who manages Chebacco Woods?
The Chebacco Woods Land Management Committee, whose members are appointed by the select boards and conservation commissions of Hamilton and Manchester-by-the-Sea, the two towns that jointly own the land. The committee maintains the trails and provides maps. To reach it, the town page says to contact the Hamilton Conservation Commission coordinator first.
