Beverly Dog Park
Beverly dog park: the airport site, resident tags and the two areas
Beverly built its dog park on airport land in 2011, and the rules read like a members' club: a city tag on every collar, residents only, and a long list of conditions set by the Parks and Recreation Commission. Here is what the city's page says, checked in fall 2026, what it leaves out, and where a dog that cannot get a tag can play instead.
Who gets in
Residents only, and every dog wears the park's own tag
The first rule is about the people. The Beverly Dog Park is for Beverly residents only, and the city's FAQ says plainly that non-residents cannot get a tag at present. The second rule is about the dog. Each one must wear an official Beverly Dog Park tag inside the fence, separate from the city license tag, and the city warns that a dog without one can earn its owner a citation. The tag is free to registered Beverly dog owners, and a lost one costs $5 to replace.
To qualify, a dog needs four things on record: a current Beverly dog license, a current rabies vaccination tag, proof of spaying or neutering, and an age of at least six months. The rules add that it must be healthy and free of parasites, and sick or injured dogs stay home. Applications go by email to the Dog Park Committee at beverlydogpark@gmail.com. Sort out the license first: Beverly expects dogs six months and older to be licensed by April 1, through the City Clerk at 191 Cabot Street.
- Beverly residents only, with no exceptions listed
- A free park tag on the collar; $5 to replace a lost one
- A current Beverly license and rabies tag
- Spayed or neutered, six months or older, healthy and parasite-free
At a glance
Puppies under six months, intact dogs and children under 10 stay outside the fence
The eligibility rules shut out three groups that owners often ask about. A puppy cannot have a tag until it is six months old, an intact dog cannot have one at all, and a child under 10 cannot come in, even holding a parent's hand. Children from 10 to 17 may enter if an adult of 18 or older supervises them the whole time, and the city says proof of age may be requested. The FAQ adds that there are no breed restrictions, only the advice that a dog should get along with other dogs.
Numbers matter too. Each person may bring no more than three dogs, every owner has to be inside the fenced play area with them, and hands should be free apart from leashes. Dogs over 25 pounds are kept out of the small-dog enclosure. The table sets the rules about who may enter side by side, as the city's page listed them when we checked in fall 2026. The city can change them at any time, so the posted rules at the gate are the ones to follow.
| Who or what | The city's rule |
|---|---|
| Owner | Beverly resident |
| Dog's age | Six months or older |
| Dog's paperwork | Beverly license, current rabies tag, spayed or neutered |
| Children | Under 10 not allowed; 10 to 17 with an adult at all times |
| Dogs per person | Three at most |
| Small-dog enclosure | No dogs over 25 pounds |
Inside the gate
Leashed to the double gate, then under your voice and in your sight
The leash rule has a precise edge. Dogs stay leashed all the way into the double-gated holding area, come off the leash there, and go back on it in the same pen before leaving. Inside, owners must keep verbal control and be able to see their dogs, and a dog that causes trouble has to be taken out at once; the Animal Control Officer can ban an aggressive dog. The city's ordinance also expects you to carry your own waste bags, even though biodegradable bags are stocked inside.
Several rules surprise first-time visitors. No food inside, for people or dogs, and that includes training treats; owners may not bring drinks in either. No digging, and whoever's dog dug a hole fills it. Sticks, balls and Chuckits belong in the back area, where a throw will not hit anyone, while children's toys and sports balls such as footballs and soccer balls are banned from the fenced area. Smoking is discouraged, and leftover smoking items can be fined as litter.
- 01
Check that the park tag and the Beverly license tag are both on the collar
- 02
Walk in on the leash and stop inside the double-gated holding area
- 03
Unclip in the holding pen, then open the inner gate
- 04
Keep your dog in sight and within voice range for the whole visit
- 05
Throw balls only in the back area, and fill any hole your dog digs
- 06
Clip the leash back on in the holding pen before you leave
The site
One acre of airport land, open since October 29, 2011
The park sits on a one-acre site owned by Beverly Airport. To find it, take LP Henderson Road off Cabot Street, Route 97, and follow it toward the airport; the park is on the left just before the airport entrance. The Dog Park Committee formed in fall 2009 as a subcommittee of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Airport Commission approved the site in March 2011, and the park opened on Saturday, October 29, 2011, after the city cleared the land and volunteers cleaned it up.
The hours are dawn to dusk, all year. One answer in the city's FAQ swaps the words and says dusk until dawn, but the rule list and the hours line both say dawn to dusk, and the rule ties those hours to safety. The page does not mention water, shade structures, lights or the ground surface, so bring a bowl and a bottle and plan winter visits around the early sunset. Report a problem to Beverly Animal Control at 978-605-2361; in an emergency, call 911.

No tag yet?
For a dog without a park tag, a matched playgroup in Gloucester is the other way to play
The tag rules leave plenty of dogs outside: puppies under six months and every dog that lives in Wenham, Hamilton or anywhere else past the city line. For a North Shore dog that needs to play, daycare at Dogtown, 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, puts it in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, watched by our trained team, with rest breaks and water stations through the day. A full day is $42 and a half day $33, and the code FIRST15 takes 15 percent off the first daycare visit.
Every new dog starts with a free evaluation, a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current town license. If your dog is intact, ask us before you book; we confirm intake at the evaluation. Beverly sits outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up or plan the drive up Route 128. A puppy too young for a park tag can start in Tiny Tails Puppy School, for pups of 8 to 16 weeks.
