Board and train for Wakefield, MA dog owners
Wakefield's bylaw lets a dog off its leash in one kind of public place only: a dog park the Town Council has designated. Everywhere else, from the Lake Quannapowitt path to the sidewalks downtown, the leash stays clipped, so a dog who pulls or lunges makes every outing harder. Here is how a stay in Gloucester fits a Wakefield household, and where to practice once your dog is home.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 128 north from the North Avenue, Route 129 or Salem Street interchanges, staying on 128 at the I-95 split in Peabody, then Eastern Avenue in Gloucester; about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street: $10 spayed or neutered, $20 intact; the application and Chapter 104 disagree on the late fee and its start date, so ask the clerk (wakefieldma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Breakheart Reservation (DCR): no dogs in designated swimming areas May 1 to September 15
- A trail we know
- Breakheart Reservation: leash of ten feet or less outside the fenced off-leash area; free parking at 100 Hemlock Road, Wakefield

Why drive north
A Wakefield family books a stay in Gloucester for loose-leash walking taught with rewards, in one block of time
Most Wakefield dogs spend their outdoor lives on a leash, so the skill that changes daily life is a leash that stays slack. Our programs build it with rewards and clear communication rather than corrections, and no prong, choke or shock collar is used at any stage. Foundation spends a week on leash skills, impulse control, place, stay, recall and crate manners. Advanced takes two weeks and adds distraction proofing, neutrality around other dogs and people, real-world outings and confidence building.
Trainers work closer to Wakefield, and for weekly classes they are the sensible choice. A stay is different arithmetic. Your dog trains every day for one or two weeks while you drive Route 128 only at the start and the end. Between sessions, a dog who is ready joins a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, which is daily practice at staying calm near other dogs. Gabriella Pope leads the training, and an update reaches you each day.
- Leash skills and impulse control from the first day
- Playgroup time when your dog is ready for it
- Daily updates while you are back in Wakefield
- No equipment designed to startle or hurt
Route 128 north
Route 128 runs straight from Wakefield to Gloucester: about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
Join Route 128 north at North Avenue, Route 129 or Salem Street, then pass through Lynnfield into Peabody, where I-95 heads for New Hampshire and Route 128 bends east toward Cape Ann. Keep to 128 through Danvers, Beverly, Wenham and Manchester-by-the-Sea. In Gloucester the highway meets Eastern Avenue, which carries Route 127 there, just before it ends, and our building is at number 210 on that road. Allow more time at either commute.
Count the trips before you commit. The free evaluation takes place on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, then comes drop-off, then collection with coaching at the end, and Advanced adds a second lesson. The Pup Van charges $10 each way within Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; Wakefield is beyond those four towns, so ask us about pick-up. Weekday drop-off windows run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM.
Wakefield walks
Practice leash manners on the Lake Quannapowitt path, then take them to Breakheart's wider trails
The path around Lake Quannapowitt puts your dog close to other walkers and dogs, and under the town bylaw it stays on a chain or leash there like everywhere else in Wakefield. Start at a quiet hour and keep each session short, rewarding a slack leash and every glance back at you. The bylaw also makes it unlawful to leave dog waste on a public sidewalk, street or park beside any body of water unless you remove it promptly, so carry bags on every lap.
Breakheart Reservation, the state park on the Saugus line, gives a dog more room. DCR opens it from sunrise to sunset with free parking at 100 Hemlock Road in Wakefield, asks for a leash no longer than ten feet outside its fenced off-leash dog area, and keeps dogs out of designated swimming areas from May 1 to September 15. Inside the fenced area your dog must stay in sight and come immediately when called. The Park Division also lists the Peter May Dog Park on Main Street.
- 01
Start on your own street with a slack leash and frequent rewards
- 02
Walk a short stretch of the lake path at a quiet hour
- 03
Carry waste bags, since the bylaw is strict beside water
- 04
Move on to Breakheart's paved loops on a leash of ten feet or less
- 05
Try the fenced dog area only once recall holds around distraction
- 06
Clip on again at the gate, with one leash in hand per dog
Town bylaw
Wakefield licenses cost $10 or $20 at the Town Clerk, and Chapter 104 keeps dogs leashed off their own premises
Chapter 104 of the town code says a dog away from its owner's premises must be restrained by a chain or leash unless it is in a public area the Town Council has designated as a dog park. Dogs must wear their identification tag whenever they are off those premises. Fines are $50 for a first offense, $200 for a second and $300 for each one after that, and the chapter counts chasing vehicles, molesting passersby and trespassing on school grounds as nuisances.
Licenses come from the Town Clerk's office at Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street, for every dog six months or older. The clerk's application lists $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact one, the same fees as Chapter 104. On lateness the two part ways, each naming its own late fee and start date, so check with the clerk before a late renewal. Pay by card or cash in the office, or by check to the Town of Wakefield, and enclose the rabies certificate and proof of spaying or neutering unless the town already has them. Bring that license to your dog's evaluation.
| Wakefield rule | What it says |
|---|---|
| Leash | Chain or leash off your premises, except a Town Council-designated dog park |
| Tags | Identification tag worn whenever the dog is off the owner's premises |
| Waste | None left on sidewalks, streets or parks beside any body of water |
| License | $10 spayed or neutered, $20 intact; the application and the code differ on the late fee, so ask the clerk |
| Fines | $50, then $200, then $300 |
Once home
Plan on coaching at Dogtown, then private sessions from $94 if the lake walks need more work
Every stay ends with coaching at our building in Gloucester. Foundation includes one go-home lesson; Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons, which may mean another Route 128 trip after your dog is home. Bring the leash and harness you use around the lake, so the lesson is built on the equipment you will actually walk with, and bring whoever else in the family walks the dog, so the cues sound the same from everyone.
If you want more help later, private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus, our hybrid program with nights at home, runs for 2, 4 or 6 weeks and includes pick-up and drop-off; before relying on it from Wakefield, confirm that your street is covered. Grooming is on site as well, so a bath can be booked before you collect your dog, and a dog who comes home clean is one less errand for the week.
- One go-home lesson with Foundation, two with Advanced
- Lessons at Dogtown, with you on the leash
- Private sessions from $94
- A bath before collection, if you book one
