Siberian Huskies

Siberian Husky board and train in Gloucester, MA

The AKC describes a friendly, fastidious, dignified sled dog bred to work in packs over vast frozen distances, and gives it the top score for vocalizing and a middle score for trainability. A husky can learn almost anything. Whether it chooses to, a few yards from an open gate, is the training problem.

The breed

Huskies bring endurance, friendliness and an overwhelming urge to run, which shapes every lesson

The AKC rates the Siberian husky five out of five for energy, for playfulness, for friendliness to strangers and for getting along with other dogs, and five for barking, on a scale whose top is labeled very vocal. Trainability sits at three, the middle of a scale that runs from self-willed to eager to please. Watchdog instinct scores one; the AKC says the breed's friendliness makes it an indifferent watchdog.

The AKC's training notes are blunt. Huskies have an overwhelming desire to run, should be on leash or in a securely fenced area at all times, and should never be allowed off lead. They cannot resist chasing small animals, so secure running room is a must. They are very social and not suited to being left alone all day. And the best approach, the AKC says, is to make all training fun for dog and handler.

  • Energy, playfulness and vocalizing: five out of five
  • Trainability: three, the middle of the AKC scale
  • Never off lead outside a secure fence, per the AKC
  • Social: not suited to long days alone

Which program

Foundation builds the recall habit, door waits and a quiet cue; Advanced tests them where distractions are real

A husky's Foundation week covers the standard list: obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, crate and household manners, plus playgroup time and enrichment when ready. A young husky's week weights recall, door and gate waits, and settling. Vocal dogs also learn a quiet cue: the trainer pays the moment the noise stops, then asks for a short calm before the next good thing. Talking is part of being a husky, so the goal is an off switch, not silence.

Advanced spends two weeks on the same list and then some: proofing against distractions, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization, ending with two scheduled coaching lessons. A husky that knows its cues in the yard often loses them at the first squirrel, so week two raises distraction one step at a time, always on a line. Daycare integration, once the dog is ready, uses a matched playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs, which the AKC itself suggests as good exercise for a city husky. Recall and escapes

A husky's recall is an emergency brake, and the fence and the leash stay the everyday plan

Recall training for a husky aims at a dependable turn when you call on a long line, and an emergency cue for the day a leash slips. It is built with high-value food, a happy tone and lots of repetitions that end in fun, so coming to you never means the end of the outing. It is not a plan to walk the dog off leash. The AKC is clear on that, and so are we.

Escapes get the same treatment. A husky learns to wait at the front door, the car door and the yard gate until released, and those waits are rehearsed with people walking in and out. At home, management carries the rest: a secure fence, a supervised yard and a leash between the car and every door. Gloucester's beaches allow dogs off leash on their dog days in the off-season, but for a husky the line stays clipped on.

  1. 01

Pick a recall word you have never used in vain and pair it with special food

  2. 02

Say it once indoors, then pay generously the moment the dog reaches you

  3. 03

Move to the yard and a long line, and add mild distractions one at a time

  4. 04

Practice a collar grab with every reward, so a catch feels normal

  5. 05

Keep using the line and the fence, and save the cue for real emergencies too

Common mistakes

The common husky mistakes are trusting the recall, shouting over the howling and leaving the dog alone for long days

The first is trusting a recall too far. A husky that comes perfectly in the yard can still vanish after a rabbit at Dogtown Common, and a dog that runs for the joy of it may not come back for a long time. The second is shouting at howling or talking, which can sound to a vocal dog like joining in. Pay the quiet moments instead, and give the dog something to do with its mouth, such as a chew or a lick mat.

The third is isolation. The AKC says huskies regularly need the company of their people or other dogs, so a husky left in a yard all day has every reason to look for a way out or call for company. The fourth is summer exercise at the wrong time of day. A thick double coat and a humid Cape Ann afternoon are a poor match, so follow the AVMA's heat guidance and run early, late or not at all.

  • Long line or fence every time, however good the recall looks
  • Reward quiet; do not shout over the howl
  • Company and work on long days, not a yard alone
  • Summer exercise in the cool hours only

After the stay

After pick-up, a husky needs daily work, a secure place to run and the door routine kept up

The go-home lesson, or the two coaching lessons in Advanced, take place at Dogtown and give you the recall cue, the door waits and the quiet cue as your husky learned them. Use them daily for a month: recall games on a line, a wait at every door and gate, and calm paid while the dog is still quiet. A husky that gets work and company each day has less reason to invent its own entertainment.

For running room, the fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park has a separate large-dog area. Daycare, $42 a full day after the free weekday evaluation between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, gives a social husky play with matched dogs, and the dogPACER treadmill is a $10 add-on for hot or icy days. Within Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Pup Van runs for $10 each way.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can board and train make my husky safe off leash?
No honest program can promise that for a husky, and the AKC says the breed should never be allowed off lead outside a secure fence. What a stay can build is a strong recall on a long line and an emergency cue for the day a leash slips. Treat both as safety equipment, not permission to unclip.
Will my husky stop howling after board and train?
It will probably still talk, because vocalizing is part of the breed. The stay teaches a quiet cue and pays calm, which helps with demand howling and noise at the window. Howling only when left alone is a different problem that may be distress, and the assessment will look at whether a home program suits it better.
My husky keeps escaping the yard. Can you fix that?
Training helps with door, car and gate waits, and with a recall for when things go wrong. It cannot replace a secure fence and supervision, which the AKC treats as essential for the breed. Tell us at the assessment how the escapes happen, whether by digging, climbing or dashing, so the plan and the home advice fit.
Is a husky too independent for a training stay?
No. A middle trainability score means the dog weighs your request against what else is on offer, so rewards have to compete. Short, playful sessions work well, as the AKC recommends. The AKC also rates the breed highly with other dogs, so playgroup time during the stay may suit yours once Gabriella Pope judges it ready.
Can my husky join the playgroups during the stay?
If it suits the dog, yes. Daycare integration is part of both programs, and groups at Dogtown are 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament. The AKC rates the breed five out of five for getting along with other dogs. A husky that chases smaller dogs too hard plays with dogs of its own size, or spends more time in training and enrichment.
