Who supervises board and train dogs at night?
Nights are the hours owners picture most and see least. They are also the hours the state's advisory committee found hardest to pin down. Here is how overnight care is normally arranged, what that debate sounded like, and the questions that get you a straight answer.
Three models
Overnight care is usually arranged one of three ways, and each has its own weak point
Kennels that keep dogs overnight tend to use one of three set-ups. In the first, staff are in the building all night, awake or on call. In the second, nobody stays, but dogs are checked late in the evening and early in the morning and watched in between by cameras or alarms. In the third, a person lives on or beside the premises and checks in through the night. The advisory committee's minutes describe Massachusetts kennels running in more than one of these ways.
Each model has a gap worth asking about. Staff on site can respond in seconds but may be busy with cleaning or other dogs. Cameras show a problem but cannot open a door. A late check and an early check can leave a long stretch in the middle. What matters is how quickly a person can reach a dog that is sick, stuck or frightened, and whether dogs are housed apart when nobody is in the room.
- Staff in the building all night, awake or on call
- Late and early checks, with cameras or alarms between
- A person living on or beside the premises
- In every case: how fast a person can reach a dog
The state's debate
The Ollie's Law advisory committee debated overnight care and settled on no number
Supervision is on the list of topics MDAR's regulations may cover, and the committee took up nights directly. In July 2025 one member proposed, as a minimum for crated or penned dogs, a check at least every 8 hours, and every 10 hours overnight, and another said that anyone leaving the building should be able to keep every dog safely separated. In August 2025 a member suggested a limit of 9 hours without supervision overnight, and another said two people should ideally be in the building.
On January 6, 2026 the committee came back to it. One member argued for two staff overnight whenever anyone is in the building; another said many organizations keep one person overnight and some keep none; and a member said he felt overnight care could not be regulated, but that a kennel with no overnight care should say so clearly in an owner disclosure. The regulations had not been released as of the March 18, 2026 minutes, so none of this is a rule.
- July 2025: a proposed check every 10 hours overnight
- August 2025: a suggested 9-hour limit without supervision
- January 2026: two overnight staff argued for, and against
- January 2026: disclosure suggested where there is no overnight care
At Dogtown
At Dogtown, nights are spent in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, and the staffing detail is confirmed before you book
Board and train sits on top of Dogtown's overnight stays. Your dog spends the day on training blocks, rest, enrichment and, once ready, a matched playgroup, then sleeps in an overnight suite with the bedding we supply, one comfort item from home and the 24/7 monitoring every overnight guest gets. Nights are kept quiet on purpose, since rest after training helps a dog keep what it learned. On Sundays the building opens only for overnight guests, from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM.
What we confirm with you rather than print: whether a person is on site through the night on your dates, how often each dog is checked, whether staffing changes on Sundays, holidays and busy summer weeks, and what happens if a dog seems unwell at two in the morning. Ask before you book and have the answers written into your plan. One committee member wanted kennels without overnight care to say so plainly, and the same plain answer is fair to ask of anyone.
Your questions
Five questions get a straight answer about nights, from us or anyone else
Ask them at the training consult or the free evaluation, held on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 at 210 Eastern Ave, where you can also see the suites. Specific beats reassuring: a time, a number, a role. If your dog has a medical condition, a history of panicking when confined or a fear of noise, say so, because those are the dogs for whom the night plan matters most. On Cape Ann, the July 3 fireworks and winter nor'easters are the nights to plan around.
Then use the first daily update to see how the plan is working: how your dog settled, whether it ate and how it is resting. A dog that is not sleeping is a reason to adjust, with shorter training blocks, more daytime rest, or a conversation about Canine Campus, which sends your dog home every night. Our page on where your dog sleeps covers the suite itself, and our board and train page sets out both programs.
