Late pick-up

What if I am late for board and train pick-up?

Flights slip, Route 128 jams and nor'easters close roads. A late pick-up is rarely hard on the dog, but it has knock-on effects worth planning for: the window you land in, the lesson you were meant to take and, around April, your dog's license. Here is how to work it out.

The windows

Pick-up runs in windows, so being late usually means the next window rather than a later hour tonight

Dogtown hands dogs back inside published windows. On weekdays they run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM; on Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM; and on Sundays, for overnight guests only, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. The windows keep the groups settled, since a dog leaving mid-session draws the others to the door. Arriving after the last window of the day means your dog sleeps one more night.

So the useful calculation is not how late you will be but which window you can reach. The table works through the common cases from the published windows. How an extra night is billed after a board and train is confirmed when you book; an ordinary overnight suite is $78 a night, but do not assume that rate applies to a late pick-up until we confirm it in writing.

The lesson

A late arrival moves the go-home lesson too, and a rushed lesson is a wasted one

The go-home lesson is not a formality at the counter. It is where you take the leash and learn the cues, the timing and the equipment your dog has been working with. Squeezing it into the last ten minutes of a window, straight off a delayed flight, wastes the most valuable hour of the program. If you will be late, ask to move the lesson rather than shorten it, and rebook it for a time you can stay without watching the clock.

Advanced has two scheduled coaching lessons, so a late return can affect both; ask at the consult how they are spaced around pick-up and what happens if the first one moves. If someone else collects your dog, they can bring it home, but the lesson belongs to the people who will handle the dog every day. Collecting late and taking the lesson properly a day later beats rushing both.

  • Ask to move the lesson, not shorten it
  • Rebook it for a time you can stay
  • Advanced: check how both coaching lessons shift
  • A stand-in collector takes the dog, not the lesson

Cape Ann specifics

Two local details can turn a late pick-up into a bigger problem: winter storms and the April 30 license date

Winter brings the delays nobody controls. A nor'easter can close roads and cancel flights at short notice, so check the National Weather Service forecast for the Boston area before a winter trip and name a local contact who can collect your dog. If you live in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea, ask whether the Pup Van, $10 each way in those towns, could bring your dog home if you are stuck, remembering that the lesson still needs you.

The second detail is paperwork. Gloucester dog licenses run to April 30, with a $20 late fee from May 1, and MDAR's Ollie's Law guidance says boarding and training kennels need proof of a current municipal license, with no grace period. A stay meant to end on April 28 that slides into May can outlast your dog's license. If your dates fall near the end of April, renew before drop-off; other towns set their own license periods, so check yours.

  • Check the Boston-area forecast before a winter trip
  • Name a local contact who can collect your dog
  • Gloucester licenses run to April 30
  • Renew before drop-off if a stay runs near May 1

Before you go

Settle the late-return plan when you book, so nobody has to improvise

Most late pick-ups are solved by a plan made weeks earlier. Ask for the late pick-up terms in writing with your booking, name a local contact who can collect your dog and make decisions, and put your travel times on the booking, including any hours you will be out of reach. Keep the Dogtown app's notifications on during the trip so a message from the front desk reaches you, and save our number in your contact's phone as well as your own.

On the day, the order is simple: tell us as soon as you know, say which window you can reach and confirm who is coming. If the lesson has to move, agree the new time in the same message. Our page on board and train while you travel covers fitting a trip around a stay, and our board and train page sets out both programs, Foundation for one week and Advanced for two.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is there a late pick-up fee?
No fee is published. Late pick-up terms, including whether an extra night is charged, are confirmed by the front desk when you book and appear in your written terms. Ask for them before the stay, especially if you are flying home on the last day and have little room for a delay.
Can someone else pick up my dog?
Ask at the consult and name them on your booking so the front desk expects them. They can collect your dog, but the go-home lesson is for the people who will handle it every day, so plan to take the lesson yourself once you are back rather than handing it to a stand-in.
What happens if I miss Saturday's last window?
Saturday pick-up ends at 6 PM. Sunday is closed for daycare and open to overnight guests from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, so ask the front desk whether your dog can be collected then. A trainer may not be free for a lesson on a Sunday, so the handover may need another day.
Will an extra night upset my dog?
Usually not much. By the end of a stay most dogs have a settled routine, and one more night in the same suite with the same people is a small change. The bigger cost tends to be a rushed handover, which is why moving the lesson matters more than the extra night itself.
